I think it's a great idea and should be done every once a month rather every once a year, it might extend the Earth's life by many hundreds more years *bellow*

Cities around the world have been turning out the lights for an hour to highlight the threat of climate change.

Sydney was the first major city to begin "Earth Hour", when at 2000 (0900 GMT), lights went out on landmarks like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Lights were then turned off in Bangkok, Manila, Budapest, Copenhagen and Dublin as those cities joined the effort.

Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco were among several hundred cities in 35 countries taking part in the event.

Critics have dismissed the event as a gimmick that will have little effect.

Australians marked Earth Hour by holding candle-lit beach parties, dinners and poker games, while traditional Aboriginal torchlight performances were also held.

And in New Zealand, thousands of homes and more than 100 business in Christchurch turned out the lights.

WWF Thailand said the switch-off in Bangkok saved 73.34 megawatts of electricity, which would have produced 45.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Public pressure

The initiative began in Sydney last year when an estimated two million residents took part, cutting energy usage by more than 10% for the hour.

Organisers estimate that 380 towns and cities are taking part.

In Britain, 26 councils dimmed lights, as did Prince Charles' private residence, Highgrove House and Winchester cathedral.

On the south coast, Brighton turned off the lights on its pier, and in London - which was not officially involved - lights were turned down at City Hall.

In the Irish capital, Dublin, the floodlights were turned off at the Custom House, the home of the Environment Department.

But in the city's financial district many lights were left on.

"The banks should have embraced this wholeheartedly and they didn't," said Cathy Flanagan, an Earth Hour organiser in the city. "But it's a start. Maybe next year."

In Copenhagen, people enjoyed a rare chance to gaze at the night sky.

"It's not often you can see the stars in a city," said local Earth Hour spokeswoman Ida Thuesen.

Kyoto change

Organisers insist the aim of Earth Hour is to show that communities care passionately about climate change and want to keep up the pressure on governments to act decisively.

Andy Ridley of the WWF, which is behind the initiative, says interest has been immense.

"We're aware of villages in Norfolk in England that are doing Earth Hour and we're aware of the big cities like Chicago and Sydney that are doing it," he told the BBC.

Internet search engine Google turned its normal white homepage black.

Australia is one of the world's worst per capita emitters of greenhouse gases and many believe recent droughts and floods are the result of man's destabilising influence on the climate, the BBC's Phil Mercer reports from Sydney.

New Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made the environment one of his priorities, signing up to the Kyoto Protocol on tackling climate change soon after he took office.

London lights out for environment

Posted Image

The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly Circus were among London landmarks plunged into darkness to raise awareness of global warming.

Lights across the city were switched off for an hour on Thursday night to encourage London's three million households to conserve energy.

The Lights Out London campaign aimed to have all non-essential lighting turned off between 2100 and 2200 BST.

It followed similar campaigns in cities including Sydney, Paris and Rome.

It was the first time the lights at Piccadilly Circus had voluntarily been switched off since World War II.

Earth Hour

Earlier on Thursday, environment minister Ben Bradshaw urged all Londoners to switch off their lights during the blackout.

Speaking in the Commons Mr Bradshaw said: "Excessive illumination contributes to climate change and you may like to join in, if you are in London tonight, the London Lights Out campaign."

Organisers said if Londoners were to have switched off their lights, the city would save 380 tonnes of CO2 in just one hour, enough to fill more than 2,000 double-decker buses or the Royal Albert Hall twice.

The event was based on Earth Hour, a similar, hour-long mass switch-off earlier this year in Sydney that involved 65,000 households and 2,000 businesses and landmarks, including the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

All six advertisers at Piccadilly Circus agreed to switch off, the first time since 1939 when they went out for the blackouts at the start of World War II.

They were switched back on in 1949. They have been forced to switch the lights off due to power cuts and the imposed three-day week in the 70s, the Museum of London said.

Lights Out London, organised by the radio station Capital 95.8FM, was supported by Friends of the Earth.

Jenny Bates, from the environmental group, said: "The majority of the capital's carbon dioxide emissions come from buildings, so switching off lights and appliances that aren't needed can play a significant role in tackling climate change.

"And it can save you money too."

Lol. Okay I realise that its a good thing to switch off for the environment, on the other hand, imagine IF department stores are still open and operating lol and people just come and grab what they need without paying. Similarly like a black-out haha but if they [people switching off lights in 1 hour] are switching off for the good of the enviroment, at least make it known to the public otherwise they will er..maybe run into each other! Hopefully that doesn't happen. Hehe..

:) so that's why they put it on 24/7! haha nice way to really save the planet! I kid I kid. Like someone said above, if they switch off at least once a day, maybe that will make a difference by using more power each time to start up? haha...kidding na. At least they try to make a difference, thats all that matters.

Not actually switching off the whole house and store, but switch off the really unnecessary lights like some people have lights on all over their house, instead for one hour, switch it off where it's not needed or get together in one room and just have one switch on for the whole house for the hour, maybe some lights that shops use to decorate can be switched off, bathrooms, storage room, corner lights etc, or a shopping centre where they have many departments, one departments closed, instead of having lights on still, dim it down or switched it off lolz, get what I mean? *whew* haha

i have lights on EVERYWHERE and i mean everywhere.. they're led night lights tho.. but when i come home at night.. my main lights automatically turn on.. it's not cus i want to blow up the earth.. no but it's because of my extreme phobia.. i'm scared of the dark.. unless someone is in the same room with me lol.. but then again a light somewhere has to be on.. lol even at hotels, i would leave the light in the bathroom or the lounge room on lol.
