Part 16
Ever since the first letter from Thanatorn, the women were able to rest easy knowing that he was doing okay. Every letter that was sent from him was a reassurance that he was still alive and well. Though their minds were a bit at ease, still they felt as if they were walking on egg shells. It's the the line between life and death have since become thinner, and there wasn't a thing they could do, but tip toe on that thin line.
The very first weeks that Thanatorn was gone, it was raining non-stop, just like the time Nani was brought home. But lately, the rain have since ceased. Though the weather seems to be looking up, lifting their spirits for the time being, they were on edge everytime they turned on the television, afraid to hear some awful news being announced from the newsreporter. They were mostly afraid of hearing that name, Thanatorn Thamadeth; because it seems like when a name is announced on television, that either means that they are either dead pr severely injured.
Arrisa sat in front of the TV and was biting her lips. She had glanced over to the remote a few times. A part of her wants to turn on the television set and keep her eyes glued on the ongoing news brodcast, but also a part of her wanted to shut it out completely, fearing that she'd hear something bad. When Sayla walked into the room carrying Nani, Arrisa quickly grabbed a book and pretended to be reading. Sayla greeted her as she pretended to be deep in thought with the book.
Sayla - Hello Arrisa.
Arrisa - Ohh.. hey, P'Sayla.
Sayla sat down and gently placed Nani over her shoulders and patted her butt to shush her to sleep.
Sayla - Arrisa... go ahead... turn on the television.
Arrisa bit her lips and then pulled the book away from her face, revealing her nervousness to Sayla.
Arrisa - But.. i'm tooo scared to. What if we..
Sayla - I think it's a good idea for us to keep up to date with the ongoing battle, so we can be prepared for what ever events that may occur.
Arrisa - Do mean an event that involves P'Torn??
Sayla - No.. no.. I mean... we should make sure we are tuned in, so in case of some kind of emergeny, we will be prepared to take action.
Arrisa - Oh.
Sayla sighed and lowered her voice. Eventhough she tried to sound optimistic, sadness could be heard in her voice.
Sayla - I trust that Thanatorn will come home to me....... come home to us, Arrisa.
Arrisa could feel her sister-in-law's, and she too felt the same way.
Arrisa - P'Say.. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound so gloom, but..
Sayla - There's no need to explain. I know exactly how you feel.
Arrisa wanted to cry. It has been 2 months since he's gone, and eventhough they have been recieving letters from Thanatorn reporting nothing but the positive, still it wasn't enough. They wanted him here; they wanted him home, where he is needed and wanted, safe with them. Then momentarily, there was a long silence as the girls sat in the living room in front of the television. Nani had already fallen asleep, but Sayla kept her on her shoulders. Somehow, having Nani close, makes her feel Thanatorn as if he was sitting next to her.
Then Sayla reached for the remote and turned on the television. Immediately, there was coverage on the war. It was everywhere, no matter what channel the television is set to.
Live, reporting from Saifa city! President Sukham Sone and his collegues have been reported missing since 4 days ago, since the raid into his headquaters performed by our special unit. There is no word of his whereabouts. Officials believed that he may be hiding in his secret bunker. As of now, our troops are working incredible hard to find him, so our nation and our neighboring country can rest assure that Sukham will be ceased. Once he is found, this operation will come to a close.
Sayla turned off the television and sighed, knowing that when the reported mentioned, "special units" that she is speaking of Thanatorn's unit.
Arrisa - I hope they find him soon, P'Say. I.I..I.. want P'Torn to come back home to us.
Sayla - Me too, Arrisa.
Arrisa - P'Say... was.. there anything in the mail today?
Sayla - No.. there was nothing.
Arrisa - Oh... shouldn't we recieve something by now P'say? It's.. it's been two weeks, and normally, P'Torn sends his replies by then.
Sayla - I don't think we have anything to worry about, Arrisa. There could be a delay with the post office. Since this war is going on, nothing has been normal lately, so we've just got to be patient okay?
Arrisa - I'll try to, but it's so God damn hard, P'Say!
Arrisa realized that she was yelling so she lowered her voice and bit her lips.
Arrisa - I'm sorry.. didn't mean to yell.
Sayla - Don't be... well.. i'm going to put Nani to her crib. Uhmm.. after that, let's make P'Torn another care package?
Arrisa - Okay, P'Say...
Sayla smiled sweetly at Arrisa, trying to hide her own uncertainty.

Thanatorn and Kade held tightly onto their automatic rifles as they approached the abandoned and broken building that was hold Sukham Sone. They had to check for any other injured people, either their own men or that off Sukham's. At that hour, it was pretty hard to see, since sun down. Thanatorn have bumped into many things as he walked cautiosly, looking left, right, back, and fourth. Sometimes when he bumped into something, he was sure it was a human body.
Kade - I'm gonna find that bastard if its the last thing I do!
Thanatorn - We'll find him... he can't be too far away from here.
On the opposite side of the building, other soldiers yelled out to eachother to make sure the coast was cleared as they made their way upstairs to search for any fallen enemies. There were falling concrete and all kinds of debris as the men made their way upstairs.
Kade - i'm glad we can bring that Sukham bastard home, dead or alive!
Thanatorn - It wil do justice to everyone.. and that's when we can go home.
Kade - I just can't wait to get home to my new wife.
Thanatorn - I see.. For me... I can't wait to see both my--
Kade - Shhh!! Shh! I hear something!
Kade and Thanatorn ducked behind a concrete column to try and listen for that noise that Kade just heard.
Kade - It sounds like a wailing--
Thanatorn motioned for Kade to shut upm cause he too heard something and it sounded like it was coming towards them. It sounds muffled as if someone was limping, but it was so dark that they were having a hard time seeing, even with the flash light built into their helmets. Thanatorn hid behind a column with his back to Kade, as Kade also hid there, looking the other way for that sound. And then there was a long pause, everything became silent. The other soldiers had already gone and covered another area, while Kade and Thanatorn were still stuck there.
Then suddenly, a loud and enraged voice followed by many shots from a machine gun.
Enemy #1 - Die you motherfuckers!!!!
The enemy shouted as he shot many rounds of ammonition at the concrete column. Bullets were flying everywhere as Kade and Thanatorn tried to shield themselves. Then suddenly, there were more bullets coming the other way from an enemy. Kade and Thanatorn dodged the bullets as they ducked down and hid behind a pile of debris.
Then out of nowhere, they heard one of their fellow soldiers come along and started to shoot at the enemies, ceasing fire from them. That was when Thanatorn took the oppotunity and rised up from the spot to shoot at them as well. But just when he stood up, a flying bullet came his way. And Thanatorn found himself falling to the ground.
Kade - Thana????!!! Thana????! You okay man???
Kade kneeled down to check on Thanatorn. But as kade yelled for Thanatorn, there was no answer coming from him. By that time, the other soldiers had already taken down the enemies. That's when Kade yelled out.
Kade - Help!!!!!! Soldier down!! Help!!! Need Black Hawk immediately!!!

Part 17
It has been two months since Thanatorn's letter. Eventhough Sayla tried to stay positive about his whereabouts, she too was starting to become like Arrisa; an emotional wreck. Lately, Arrisa hasn't been able to eat. Evertime she opens up her mouth to eat, she'd start to cry and her apetite would subside and she just end up running to her room.
Within the two months that has passed, Sayla had to go see Dr. Wimun several times to get the heart devices monitored. So far, so good. Eventhough Sayla seemed to be going through a lot of stress, surprising, she is doing well. Dr. Wimun reassured her that they are working really hard on to donor heart. As a matter of fact, her name is almost at the top of the waiting list. Had, Thanatorn been home, he'd be upset about it, but what Thanatorn doesn't understand is that Sayla is on a waiting list just like everyone else.
Nani is almost 4 months old and is growing rapidly before Sayla's eyes. Not everyday that goes by that Sayla doesn't wish Thanatorn is home to see their baby girl. But no matter how gloom the situation may be, she still managed to put on a smile around other people. She just couldn't show them exactly how she felt, not when she has a baby girl that depends on her.
Sayla had an appointment with Dr. Wimun again, so she left baby Nani with Arrisa. After the appointment and all tests were cleared and had positive results, Sayla caught a cab and was on her way home. Eventhough she gave the cab driver a friendly smile, he still saw the sorrow in her eyes. Even a stranger could see that. While driving Sayla home, the cab driver just couldn't help, but wonder why such a beautiful woman looks so sad.
Cab driver - Uhh... I don't mean to pry, but.. are you okay Miss?
Sayla - Yes! yes.. I'm fine.
Sayla had to lower her head, a little embarrased that she answered that question too quick, trying to hide the truth. She also lowered her voice, wondering if it was that obvious.
Sayla - Why do you ask?
Cab driver - Because you look so sad.. as if you were at a funeral.
Sayla - Don't say that!
Cab driver - Oh....I-I'm sorry. So you did lose someone?
Sayla couldn't help, but wonder if perhaps the cab driver's words were just an interpretation of her true feelings, of the truth. What if Thanatorn is already dead and she doesn't even know it yet?
Sayla - No.. he's still out there... he's gotta be.
Cab driver - Ahh.. I see... so he was sent to war?
Sayla cringed and closed her, and all the tears that hid there fell down her cheeks. It was almost too painful to answer, but she answered anyway.
Sayla - Yes.. he went to war. And.. I haven't heard from him for two months now. No letters.. no calls.. no answer. I've even tried contacting the special armed forces unit to find out where he is and how he is, but nothing.
Cab driver - Ahh... I see. Believe it or not Miss, I'm also waiting on my son to come back. He's been there since that stupid war started. And.. I haven't heard from him either.
Sayla - I'm.. I'm sorry.
Cab driver - Don't be. We are all on the same boat. I understand your sorrow, because mine runs really deep too. But you know.....
Sayla sighed and wiped her tears.
Cab driver - We just have to continue living.. continue to be happy, even if we aren't. We just have to--for them. For their sake. Because if they knew that we are here waiting for them unhappily, they will feel awful not just being in a war, but because they will worry about us.
Sayla - I've tried to be.. but it's just getting unbearable. I-I.. miss him so much that it hurts more than any pain I've ever felt.
Cab driver - I understand, Miss.
The cab then turned on her street and pulled up in front of her house. Sayla grabbed her stuff and was digging into her purse to pay the driver, but he immediately stopped her.
Cab driver - Miss.. please, you don't have to pay me today. It will be on me today okay?
Sayla - Oh.. no! I cann't do that. I've used your meter and I have to pay. Here.. here, take this.
The cab driver smiled at her warmly and touched her hand to stop her from handing him the money.
Cab driver - Please.. it's on me.
Sayla starred at the man, and realized something. He reminded her a lot like her late father. She searched his face for reasurance and again, the man smiled at her, so she nodded and stuffed the money back into her purse.
Sayla - Thank you....
Cab driver - It was my pleasure miss...
Before the cab driver went back into his car, he gave Sayla another heart warming smiled and reminded her of something.
Cab driver - Remember Miss... keep him alive in your heart. He's out there... he'll be home soon. Take care of yourself...
He smiled, got into the cab, and drove off.
Sayla smiled to herself, feeling confident that Thanatorn was okay. Sayla turned around and headed inside the house. She was walking slowly, but soon quickened her pace when she heard cries not only from Nani, but also from Arrisa, She rushed inside the house to see if everyone was okay. When she got inside, she found a hysterical Arrisa pacing back and fourth with a crying Nani carried on her hips.
Sayla - Arrisa!! Arrisa!!! What's wrong??
Arrisa ran to Sayla and handed Nani over to Sayla and continued pacing back and fourth while crying out loudly.
Sayla - Arrisa?? What's going on?
Arrisa didn't answer, but instead she kept pacing and holdong on to her forehead, and ran fingers through her hair nervously.
Sayla - Arrisa!!! You're scaring me.. you're scaring your niece! What's going on?!
Arrisa then looked at Sayla with blood-shot eyes.
Arrisa - I-I-I just watched the news. They said the war is over. Sukham Sone is caught.
Sayla - Well.. that's great news!!
Arrisa sobbed and covered her face and tried to speak through her sobs.
Arrisa - It's good news, but... but..
Sayla - What is it??
Sayla was starting to feel panick. What if Arrisa got word that Thanatorn is dead?
Sayla - Arrisa!!!!!!!!!
Arrisa - But it's been 2 months since we heard from P'Torn. And.. on the news, they said.. a special unit that found Sukham Sone lost a lot of their men. So.. I'm.. I'm worried about P'Torn. What if he's .. he's not coming back?!? What if he's dead?!!
Sayla - NO! Don't say that. We don't know for sure.. he's not dead! He can't be. He promised us that he will come home to us! And I believe him! He's still out there. Watch, you'll see.
Arrisa - I-I- I don't know anymore. I just don't!
Arrisa covered her face and sat down on the couch. Nani continued crying while Sayla hugged her and tried to shush her by patting her butt.
Sayla - It's okay, my sweet angel. Mommy's here.
Arrisa - P'Say.. how can you be so sure?? The war is over God Damn it, but where is he!!! Why won't they call us.. those bastards. They got what they needed and they don't even care about the soldier's families!!!
Sayla - I'm.. I'm sure we'll know something soon.
Arrisa - When??!!!!!!!!
Sayla - I don't know, but I just know in my heart that he's alive. Arrisa.

P'Torn.. please come back to me. Please keep your promise and come home, Sayla uttered softly to herself.

Part 18
Arrisa and Sayla felt as if they were walking on broken glass for the next two weeks. They waited anxiously by the phone and even checked the mail 5 times a day, hoping for some kind of miracle. Sayla, eventhough she was trying to stay optimistic, she was getting worried each day that her aching heart would give out on her and that she'll never get to see Thanatorn when he gets back. Her heart ached emotionally and literally. If only she could just run into his arms right now, her life would be complete. If only he were here to hold her, then all of her fears would vanish. And even if she were to die from complication, at least his face she'll get to feel for the very last time.
Sayla sat on the rocker in the nursey with Nani fast asleep on her lap. Even though the baby's been asleep for hours now, she still rocked back and fourth slowly; empty and blank like a zombie, feeling completely numb. She looked onto the quiet nursery as tears fell down her face. A wave of guilt washed over her.
Maybe I was the one who killed you, Thanatorn?? Is it my fault? Why didn't I stop you! Sayla uttered to herself. Wait.. wait! What am I talking about, he's not dead!!!
Sayla bit her lip, trying to stop herself from saying such things. She rose from the rocking chair and placed Nani into her crib. She left the room and was about to go knocking on Arrisa's door, when she stopped herself, knowing that Arrisa is inside moping under the covers. It was already bed time, so she didn't want to bother her anymore. She wiped her tears and went into the bathroom and shut the door, and had to lean on it for support. Her legs and knees felt so weak, but it didn't feel as weak as her heart right now. What if Thanatorn never comes back? What will become of them? How will they afford this house? That will mean she will be a widow, Nani will be fatherless, and Arrisa--she'll be the only surviving member of her family.
Sayla cupped her aching head and ran to the sink. She felt her aching heart jump and literally feel the devices hanging from her chest vinrate. With shaken hands, she opened the medicine cabinet and searched for her medicine. As she went through the medicine cbinet, she just couldn't get through them fast enough to find the medicine she need, so she knocked them all down. Wheh she finally found her medicine, she opened it frantically, and popped two pills into her mouth and swallowed it dry. When she closed the cabinet, that's when she caught a glimpse of herself, and those devices hanging from her chest. She doesn't look like the Sayla she knew. The Sayla she knew was happy--was bright and energetic. Now the Sayla staring back at her has dark eyes, swollen from crying, face sunken in from losing weight, and lips quivering from fear of losing him. The Sayla staring back at her was sad and angry, and sickly. She could be dropping dead any minute now, but the Sayla staring back at her had to hold on, for him. He promised her--promised that he'll come home. She closed her tired eyes as tears streaked down the face that was already soaked from tears.
She gripped the medicine tightly inside her palms, clutching it to her chest, feeling those damn things vibrate. And then she couldn't hold it in anymore.
GOD DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She screamed at herself in the mirror. WHY WERE YOU BORN WITH A DISEASED HEART!!!!!!!!!!!???
That' when she threw the tube of medicine clutched in her hands at the mirror, shattering not only the mirror, but the tube of medicine all over the floor.
Sayla broked down and weeped like she hasn't weeped before. All the emotions and hurt flowed out like a waterfall. She grabbed a handful of pills that was laying around and threw it all over the bathroom.
This doesn't matter anymore!!!!!!!!! I might as well die if I lose you!!!!!!!
And then there was a bang on the door.
Arrisa - P'Say!! P'Sayy!!! Are you okay?????
Sayla closed her mouth with her hands and didn't say a word, hoping that Arrisa would just go away.
Arrisa - P'Say... What's wrong?? Are you okay?
Still nothing. Sayla weeped silenty into her palms. For the past long months, she was the one trying to be strong for everyone, but now-- it's been 2 weeks since the war ended and still no word. They haven't heard from him for over two months. Sayla was tired of lying to herself--maybe he is dead! And if he is dead, then all of her hopes, dreams, wishes; they are all shattered into pieces. There's no point of preyending anymore, she thought. Maybe if she rejected Thanatorn a long time ago when he wanted to court her, then none of this would have happened! He'd still be alive; he wouldn't feel obligated to give himself to war to save her, to only be told the same thing, that the donor heart doesn't come easily with a snap of a finger. Maybe if she had rejected his proposal, then he'd still be alive. Then maybe, she will deal with her diseased heart alone. Sayla cupped her head and thought of all these negative things. But Arrisa kept on disrupting her thoughs as she banged on the door.
Arrisa - P'Say!! Open the door, please!!!
Sayla - What do you want?
Sayla spoke through shaken voice.
Arrisa - I want to talk to you.
Sayla - Go away Arrisa.. you're right, and I'm wrong. He's dead! It's all over now.. we've lost everything.
Arrisa - No.. don't say that, P'Say!
Sayla - I was a fool all along trying to hide the truth.. trying to hide the fact that P'Torn won't be coming back.
Arrisa - But like you said, we don't know for sure yet!
Sayla - Are you kidding me, Arrisa?? We havn't heard from him for over two months! I've been a fool for believing in such fables. You are right and I was wrong, so... just... just go away.

Sayla wiped her eyes and began to stand up.

Arrisa - Then please come out. We've got to stay strong.. like you've always taught me.. if not for P'Torn, then at least for Nani's sake!
Sayla paused for a minute cause she knew that Arrisa was right. She can't give up now, she's got a little girl that's depending on her. And then after a long pause, she finally opened the door. The two women looked at eachother and cried. They reached for one another and hugged. Arrisa looked into the bathroom and saw the mess that Sayla did.
Arrisa - don't worry about that, I'll clean it up okay?
Sayla - I'm sorry.. I.. was looking for my pills.
Arrisa looked at the floor and saw the trail of pills.
Arrisa - Well.. it looks like you found them.
And then right away the two girls started to laugh at Arrisa's light joke.
Sayla - Well.. it's late, I think I'm going to join Nani in her nursey and go to bed.
Arrisa - Wait, P'Say, it's only 9:30, won't you join me? Let's just sit around and drink cofee and eat junk.
Sayla - Well.. you know I can't have that much caffeine.
Arrisa - Right! Okay, how about I make you a hot cup of coco?
Sayla - Okay... that sounds pretty good right now.
Just when the two ladies were about to walk to the kitchen, there was a knock on the door. They both looked at eachother and right away, they dodged to the door. When they got to the door, they looked at eachother again while the knocks kept coming.
Sayla - Who could that be at this hour??
Arrisa - I don't know, let's find out.
Arrisa reached for the knob and turned it. When she opened the door, there was a man in uniform standing at the door. Right away, the ladies faces flushed with all kinds of emotions. From anticipation to excitement to anxiety to nervousness. What is this man doing here? Is he here to deliver bad news or good news?
Arrisa - H-hi , how may I help you?
Officer - Are you Mrs. Thamadeth?
Arrisa - I'm Miss Thamadeth. That's Mrs. Thamadeth.
Arrisa pointed to Sayla who was standing next to her.
The officer then turned to Sayla.
Officer - Mrs. Thamadeth, I'm officer Jung San from special Unit stationed here in Khon Kaen. I've come to deliver news on your husband, Thanatorn Thamadeth.
Sayla's eyes widened and her heart beat faster than a clock ticking. Arrisa grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
Sayla - What is it?
Officer - Ma'am, Thanatorn was involved in a battle on ground zero. He was seeking survivors in an abandoned building when--
The ladies looked at eachother and their hearts were pounding, each could easily hear their hearts. Suddenly the ground underneath Sayla began to shake. She swallowed the hard lump in her throat.
Sayla - Is.. is he... okay?
Officer - Ma'am, Thanatorn were among the men who were hit by the flying ammo. But....
That's when Sayla couldn't hold onto herself any longer. The floor spun underneath her and everything went blurry. She then collapsed, but fell right into Arrisa's arms. She fainted before hearing the west of the news.
Officer - Ma'am!!! Ma'am!
Arrisa - Quick! Help me get her inside onto the sofa. I need to grab the vapor stick!!!
The officer grabbed Sayla's torso while Arrisa took her legs and they rested her on the spfa. The officer took off his hat and shook his head while Arrisa ran into the bedroom to get the vapor stick.
Officer - So sorry ma'am, I came to deliver good news. I didn't mean to make you faint.
The officer uttered to himself.
Part 19 Coming up!
Arrisa and Sayla felt as if they were walking on broken glass for the next two weeks. They waited anxiously by the phone and even checked the mail 5 times a day, hoping for some kind of miracle. Sayla, eventhough she was trying to stay optimistic, she was getting worried each day that her aching heart would give out on her and that she'll never get to see Thanatorn when he gets back. Her heart ached emotionally and literally. If only she could just run into his arms right now, her life would be complete. If only he were here to hold her, then all of her fears would vanish. And even if she were to die from complication, at least his face she'll get to feel for the very last time.
Sayla sat on the rocker in the nursey with Nani fast asleep on her lap. Even though the baby's been asleep for hours now, she still rocked back and fourth slowly; empty and blank like a zombie, feeling completely numb. She looked onto the quiet nursery as tears fell down her face. A wave of guilt washed over her.
Maybe I was the one who killed you, Thanatorn?? Is it my fault? Why didn't I stop you! Sayla uttered to herself. Wait.. wait! What am I talking about, he's not dead!!!
Sayla bit her lip, trying to stop herself from saying such things. She rose from the rocking chair and placed Nani into her crib. She left the room and was about to go knocking on Arrisa's door, when she stopped herself, knowing that Arrisa is inside moping under the covers. It was already bed time, so she didn't want to bother her anymore. She wiped her tears and went into the bathroom and shut the door, and had to lean on it for support. Her legs and knees felt so weak, but it didn't feel as weak as her heart right now. What if Thanatorn never comes back? What will become of them? How will they afford this house? That will mean she will be a widow, Nani will be fatherless, and Arrisa--she'll be the only surviving member of her family.
Sayla cupped her aching head and ran to the sink. She felt her aching heart jump and literally feel the devices hanging from her chest vinrate. With shaken hands, she opened the medicine cabinet and searched for her medicine. As she went through the medicine cbinet, she just couldn't get through them fast enough to find the medicine she need, so she knocked them all down. Wheh she finally found her medicine, she opened it frantically, and popped two pills into her mouth and swallowed it dry. When she closed the cabinet, that's when she caught a glimpse of herself, and those devices hanging from her chest. She doesn't look like the Sayla she knew. The Sayla she knew was happy--was bright and energetic. Now the Sayla staring back at her has dark eyes, swollen from crying, face sunken in from losing weight, and lips quivering from fear of losing him. The Sayla staring back at her was sad and angry, and sickly. She could be dropping dead any minute now, but the Sayla staring back at her had to hold on, for him. He promised her--promised that he'll come home. She closed her tired eyes as tears streaked down the face that was already soaked from tears.
She gripped the medicine tightly inside her palms, clutching it to her chest, feeling those damn things vibrate. And then she couldn't hold it in anymore.
GOD DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She screamed at herself in the mirror. WHY WERE YOU BORN WITH A DISEASED HEART!!!!!!!!!!!???
That' when she threw the tube of medicine clutched in her hands at the mirror, shattering not only the mirror, but the tube of medicine all over the floor.
Sayla broked down and weeped like she hasn't weeped before. All the emotions and hurt flowed out like a waterfall. She grabbed a handful of pills that was laying around and threw it all over the bathroom.
This doesn't matter anymore!!!!!!!!! I might as well die if I lose you!!!!!!!
And then there was a bang on the door.
Arrisa - P'Say!! P'Sayy!!! Are you okay?????
Sayla closed her mouth with her hands and didn't say a word, hoping that Arrisa would just go away.

The officer stood nervously holding his hat and shifted his weight left to right, not knowing what to do. He felt guilty for making Sayla faint. He should have just spit out the good news right when they opened the door for him. And now there's a lady unconcious before him. When Arrisa found the vapor stick, she quickly took it to where Sayla laid unconcious. She looked at the officer angrily.
Arrisa - See what you've done?? All this time we've been waiting for you people to contact us about Thanatorn, but nothing. And now you show up at our step in the middle of the God damn night. Why didn't you contact us earlier or came earlier in the day?? Can't you see that my sister-in-law is a sick woman!!!!!!
Arrisa held the vapor stick to Sayla's nose so that she could inhale it as she breathed in.
Officer - Miss, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to make Mrs. Thamadeth faint. I've just come deliver news, I came as I was told!
Arrisa - Well! You people got some nerves, coming here. First you start a war, then you take my brother eventhough you don't need him, and now??? Please just leave! You've done enough okay???
Officer - But Miss.. Don't you want to--
Arrisa - Where is your office?? And what is your name? I will go there first thing in the morning to straighten this out, but right now, I've got to make sure my sister-in-law is okay!!
Officer - Miss, is she okay? Maybe we should take her to the doctor. Please let me drive you there.
Arrisa - You think it's tht easy to just pick up and leave??? Do you realized that there is a baby sleeping in the nursery??? Do you realized that you took a new father to war?? Leaving his baby here without him??? Leaving his sick wife behind?
Officer - Miss Thamadeth, I'm just a messenger. I don't have--
Arrisa - That's right!! So I want you to take my message to the guy in charge, you hear me?? Now leave!!!
Officer - But Miss Thamadeth! I've got important news to deliver to you.
Arrisa - I told you, you people have done enough. Just leave me your name and I will see to that your superiors be notified of your so-called message. You' nearly killed my sister-in-law!!!
While Arrisa showed the officer her disapproval of the army, she kept the vapor stick under Sayla's nose and didn't realized that Sayla was moving slightly, almost coming to conciousness.
Officer - Again, Miss Thamadeth, I am just the messenger. I am truly sorry for what just happened. But please let me help. Will Mrs. Thamadeth be okay or shal I need to call an ambulance?
Arrisa - No! I can call the ambulance myself. Now, please.. just leave.
The officer put on his hat, tipped it, and apologized one more time. But as he was about to walk out the door, Sayla sat up and called out to him.
Sayla - Wait!!
The officer turned around and was glad that Sayla awoke.
Arrisa - P'Say, I think he needs to leave. We need to make a comp;aint tomorrow!
Sayla - No, Arrisa. It's okay.
Sayla then turned her attention to the officer. Bu now Arrisa crossed her arms and refused to look at him. In her mind, she feels like the army stole her brother from her, so she resents them.
Sayla - Sir? Please continue where you left off. I'm okay now.
Officer - Mrs. Thamadeth, my apologies. It is our policy to explain to you in detail of the sitation, so I was only doing my job.
Arrisa - Oh, so your job is to scare people and make then faint??!!
Sayla - Arrisa.. it's okay. Let's let the man speak.. please. If it's about Thanatorn, good or bad.. I'm all ears.
Sayla then nodded at the officer to let him continue.
Sayla - Sir, please.. what kind of news do you have for us? Start from the beginning.
Officer - Thanatorn was shot.
Sayla and Arrisa gasps and closed their mouth with their hands. Arrisa then took the vapor stink and sniffed it herself, trying to prevent herself from fainting this time. Sayla somehow remained calm.
Officer - He was shot by the enemy, however..... he got lucky.
That's when Sayla and Arrisa took a sigh of relief.
Arrisa - So are you saying that P'Torn is alive and well???
Officer - Yes..... fortunately, the bullet missed vital artieries and major organs.
Sayla - So where is he now????
Officer - He is resting in Saifa city hospital.
Arrisa - How long has he been there????
Officer - For two months now. He's been recovering there for the past two months.
Sayla - That's why we didn't hear from him.
Arrisa looked at Sayla with a lot of excitement in her eyes. She then stood up and jumped and cheered. She was sorry to think that he was dead all this time.
Sayla - Since the war is over, can we go visit him????????
Officer - No.
Arrisa - What?? Why??????????????
Sayla - Sir?? Why not? We want to see him.
Officer - Because you don't need to travel hundreds of miles to see him.
Arrisa - Huh??
Officer - Because he's coming home tomorrow evening.
Sayla and Arrisa looked at eachother disbelief. It was so suureal, they thought this moment would never come.
Officer - I've come to deliver some paperwork and special orders in order to care for him.
The officer handed the girls a stack of paper. They took it and skimmed it. It was instructions on the care of a wounded soldier. There was also a list of things they needed to buy.
Arrisa - Oh my God, P'Sayla!!!!!!
Sayla - Thank you for the news, sir.
Officer - It was my pleasure. Well.. I better get going. You ladies have a good night. Again, I'm sorry about earlier.
Sayla - That's okay,, goodnight.
Arrisa hesitated, but said goodnight to the officer as well.
When the officer left, the girls cheered and hugged. This was the best news ever.
Sayla - Looks like we've got to get up early and prepare for hs return. I'll go to the market tomorrow to but the things he needs and also I want to make his favorite food and deserts.
Arrisa - P'Say!! I'm so excited. How about you stay here and get things ready here and I'll go pick those things up?? Besides, I want to pick him up a little welcome home gift.
Sayla - Okay.. sounds like a good idea; I've got to get this place tidy up, so he feels welcomed.
Arrisa - This is the a dream come true P'Say. Thank you so much for putting up with me and for getting me through these tough three months. I feel so bad.. I mean... I should have been the one to comfort you since you're also going through medical st--
Sayla interrupted her, not wanting to be reminded of her heart condition.
Sayla - I'm glad I was able to be there for you Non'Arrisa. You were there for me too... whether you believe ir or not. So let's be happy and get ready for his return.
Arrisa nodded and hugged Sayla.
Sayla - I think we all should head to bed.. it will be a long and exciting day tomorrow.

Arrisa hesitated, but said goodnight to the officer as well.
When the officer left, the girls cheered and hugged. This was the best news ever.
Sayla - Looks like we've got to get up early and prepare for hs return. I'll go to the market tomorrow to but the things he needs and also I want to make his favorite food and deserts.
Arrisa - P'Say!! I'm so excited. How about you stay here and get things ready here and I'll go pick those things up?? Besides, I want to pick him up a little welcome home gift.
Sayla - Okay.. sounds like a good idea; I've got to get this place tidy up, so he feels welcomed.
Arrisa - This is the a dream come true P'Say. Thank you so much for putting up with me and for getting me through these tough three months. I feel so bad.. I mean... I should have been the one to comfort you since you're also going through medical st--
Sayla interrupted her, not wanting to be reminded of her heart condition.
Sayla - I'm glad I was able to be there for you Non'Arrisa. You were there for me too... whether you believe ir or not. So let's be happy and get ready for his return.
Arrisa nodded and hugged Sayla.
Sayla - I think we all should head to bed.. it will be a long and exciting day tomorrow.
Arrisa - Okay, P'Say...
Sayla - Goodnight nong Arrisa.
Arrisa - Goodnight, P'Sayla.
Sayla walked to the nursery to kiss Nani and sleep there with her, while Arrisa twirled around and went ahead and dimmed all the lights. Tomorrow will be a good day indeed.

Author's note: I'm so sorry! I said the conclusion was next, but I couldn't fit everything all in one part, so I decided to extend it for another part. Also, sorry for the late update.. I wasn't feeling well, but now I feel better. Hope you guys Enjoy.
Part 20
Just when the sun was rising, Arrisa rose from her bed and stretched, ready to get up and get ready for the return. Today was the day that her beloved brother will return home from a war that lasted for over 6 months. It was a short war indeed, but everyone was glad that Sukham was captured and land was returned to their rightful owners. The sun was was rising slowly as Arrisa peaked through her curtains. What a beautiful day, no signs of grey skies to ruin lives.
Arrisa looked in the mirror and smiled at herself. Finally, all the worries had been lifted off of her shoulders. She went to the bathroom and got herself ready to go to the market and grab a few things for lunch. and while she was at at, she wanted to grab a welcome home gift for Thanatorn. When Arrisa was done getting herself ready, she left her room and was surprised to find that Sayla and Nani were already up and in the kitchen. Sayla was feeding Nani some boiled carrots.
Arrisa - Goodmorning, P'Say... wow, I didn't realize that you were already up.
Sayla - I was too excited to keep sleeping, and for some reason, Nani woke early as well. Maybe she knows that daddy is coming home.
Arrisa walked over to Nani and gave her a kiss on the cheeks.
Arrisa - Is that right baby? Did you already know that daddy was coming home??
Nani cooed and babbled at her aunt. And Arrisa gave her another kiss and squeezed her fat cheeks.
Arrisa - I love you my sweet and beautiful niece!
Sayla - The officer said that P'Torn will be returning a little after noon, so we'd better hurry and get going.
Arrisa - Oh no, P'Say.. don't worry, you and Nani stay here. I'll make a quick run. I'll be back within an hour and I'll start to cook P'Torn's favorite dish.
Sayla - Are you sure?
Arrisa - Yes, I'll be quick. Besides, you've got to stay back and pretty yourself up.
Arrisa winked at Sayla and Sayla threw a napkin at her.
Sayla - Silly girl.. get your mind out of the gutter!
Arrisa - Haha... who knows, maybe Nani will be having a brother or sister once P'Torn return!
Sayla threw another napkin at Arrisa.
Sayla - Silly!!! Okay, you should go now, before it get's too late! I'll stay here and tidy up then.
Arrisa - Alright alright... I'll be back!!
Arrisa grabbed her purse and headed out the door. Sayla giggled to herselfu, and thought about what Arrisa said. Another child would be nice, she smmiled at the thought and continued to feed Nani.
Sayla looked around to make sure Arrisa was gone. That's when she leaned forward and whispered to Nani.
Do you want a sister or a brother?
Nani smiled, cooed, and touched her Mother's face.
Sayla then shook her head slightly and covered her mouth in embarrassment.
Ughh, look what Arrisa made me think of! I don't think P'Torn would be ready yet...
Sayla laughed to herself and scooped some carrots into Nani's mouth.
After the feeding, Sayla placed Nani into her bouncer while she cleans up the house and started the laundry. Then while she was dusting the curtains, she realized that she forgot to ask Arrisa to buy her some coconut milk/ She wanted to make Thanatorn's favorite dessert. She grabbed the phone and dialed Arrisa's number. Arrisa picked up on the 4th ring.
Arrisa - P'Say?
Sayla - Arrisa, sorry to bother you, but I forgot to buy coconut milk the last time we went grocery shopping. Could you please buy it? P'Torm would love some Num Wun when he comes home.
Arrisa - Sure, no problem. Is there anything else I can get you , P'Say?
Sayla - Hmm.. that's all. Oh.. where are you now?
Arrisa - I'm about 10 minutes away from the market.
Sayla - Oh okay... see you soon.
Arrisa - K.. bye, P'Say. See you.
Sayla hung up and walked into the kitchen to prepare some stuff for the Num Wun. She called out to Nani as she took some things out from the pantry and fridge.
Sayla - Bet you're excited to see daddy huh, sweet angel?
When Sayla was about to reach for the tapioca bag in the pantry, the device that was tapped onto her chest vibrated and she felt a sharp pain stabbed at her heart. She stood still and took a deep breath. She patted her chest and panted, trying to take deep breaths.
Oh no.. please.. no.. not now. Please!!!! Sayla shouted, causing Nani to startle and cry.
The pleading must have helped cause suddenly the pain vanished, but Sayla ran to Nani and wrapped her in her arms.
Mommy so sorry.... Mommy didn't mean to scared you, she whispered while holding Nani.
Sayla kissed Nani and patted her to soothe her.
When Nani quiet down, Sayla heard a car pulled up in the drive-way.
Sayla - Sweet angel, Auntie Arrisa is here. Let's go help her bring in the groceries.
When Sayla opened the front door to help Arrisa, Sayla froze and her eyes widened when she saw that it wasn't Arrisa who pulled up. She stood there holding Nani in her arms while keeping her eyes on her husband; the man that she'd been dreaming of every single night; the man that she uttered his name every morning. Sayla nearly fainted when she saw Thanatorn stepped out of the vehicle slowly, being assisted by officers.
When he was fully out of the vehicle, Sayla couldn't believe her eyes. Her beloved husband stood there with a big smile on his face, and tears in his eyes. There were crutches on his sides. Sayla trailed her eyes down towards the ground and noticed that Thanatorn was missing a leg. But his missing leg didn't scare her, she was shocked to see her husband standing there and looking like he hasn't eaten for days. He was all skin and bones. Sayla couldn't take it any longer, she ran towards Thanatorn while he held his arms open. She ran right into his embrace.
Sayla - Darling........ I miss you so much!!!!!!!
Thanatorn - I missed you.. baby.
Sayla cupped Thanatorn's face and kissed all over. Nani babbled and cooed and then her daddy kissed her forehead.
Thanatorn - My little girl got so big....
Sayla - Yes, she did.... she looks like you, darling......
Thanatorn then stared into Sayla's eyes.
Thanatorn - I told you I'll be home.. I'll come home to you..
Sayla - Thank you for keeping your promise, darling...
Thanatorn then kissed his wife on the lips and held onto her and their daughter tightly as if there was no tomorrow.
When they finally let go of the embrace, they didn't even realize that the officers had already left.
Sayla - Let's go inside, darling...

Part 21 - The conclusion
When Thanatorn stepped into his home, a warmth washed over him. It felt so good being in a familiar place and with the women that he loves so much. The feelings were so overwhelming that he couldn't help, but cry. He stood there and wandered his eyes around, trying to take in as much as possible. Sayla saw that his tears were falling down, so she quickly wiped them for him. Being away at war took a toll on him. After watching everyone die around him, he knew that it was a glimpse of hell. And now that he's finally home, heaven was here again.
Sayla - P'Torn... ? Darling..?
Sayla wiped his tears and kissed his cheeks and wrapped her arms around him one more time.
Sayla - Let's go sit down. I'll get you something to drink okay.
Sayla helped Thanatorn sit on the couch and placed baby Nani on her rocker in front of him. When he sat down, he reached over to his daughter and carressed her face. Her skin feels so soft; it doesn't feel like the rough asphalt and dirt that he had to bury his face in for months just trying to escape the bombs and gunfire. When his daughter giggled and cooed back at him, that's when he knew he was home for good.
Sayla - Darling? What would you like to drink sweetie?
Thanatorn - Uhm.. anything you've got, baby..
Sayla - Okay.. I just made fresh sweet tea. I'll give you a nice cold glass okay?
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Sayla was beyond happy that her husband's home. But she did see that he has changed a bit. The Thanatorn that she met and married was vibrant and cheerful, but the Thanatorn she sees now seems distant and sad. She knew that perhaps she just needs to give him some time to adjust.
Sayla handed him the glass of ice tea and he thanked her with a smile. He took a small sip and placed it down on the coffe table. Though he is now in a familiar warm place, somehow he felt like a stranger in his own home. Everything looked exactly the same when he left, but after being surrounded by collpased buildings and busted metals and bombs and death, he felt a little uneasy. Sayla watched him as he tried to adjust himself. She knew he felt awkward, so she quickly tried to make him feel at home.
Sayla - Darling... I'm so happy today.. Seeing you makes me feel safe and at ease.
Thanatorn - I'm.. I'm happy too. Our daughter.. she got so big.
Sayla - Yes, hehe... she's quite the eater. I think she eats more than I do!
Sayla laughed and waited for Thanatorn to laughed too, but he just did a little chuckle and then held on to his own hands.
Sayla - Uhmm.. ohh.. here, let me take off your jacket for you.
Sayla took a hold of his jacket and allowed him to lean forward so she could take them off for him.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Sayla - P'Torn.. While you watch Nani.. I'm going to continue preparing some things in the kitchen okay?
Thanatorn - Ohh? I..I watch Nani?
Sayla - Yes..
Thanatorn - But.. but.. I..
Sayla - Silly, you don't have to do much. All you've got to do is keep an eye on her for me.
Thanatorn - But what if she cries.. and I get save her??!!!
Thanatorn's eyes began to tear up.
Thanatorn - What if I let her slip and I can't save her? What if they come and get her???!!!
Thanatorn grabbed his head nervously and ran his fingers through his hair as if he was about to lose control. It looked as if he was afraid of something reliving a nightmare that he probably went through.
Sayla was a bit startled by his reaction. She moved over to sit by him and grabbed his shoulders.
Sayla - P'Torn??!! P'Torn??!! Darling!! It's okay! You're at home now!!
Thanatorn paused and then he looked around him to make sure he was safe. When he realized that he was indeed home, he searched Sayla's face frantically.
Thanatorn - I.. I.. What's happening to me??!!!
Thanatorn buried his face into Sayla's chest and weeped.
Sayla - Darlinng... you're... safe now. You're home with me.. with Nani.. and with Arrisa.
That's when Thanatorn felt the devices on her chest. He raised from her chest and took a hold of her collar, and started to unbuttoned it.
Sayla - Darling, what are you doing?
Thanatorn didn't answer her, but instead kept on unbuttoning her blouse. When he was done unbuttoning, he pulled her shirt open to expose her chest. To his horror, she was still wearing those devices. His eyes widened in shock and then he searched her face. Sayla quickly took a hold of her shirt and buttoned herself up.
Thanatorn - What's the meaning of this?!!
Sayla - Uhh... they.. they...
Thanatorn - I already gave those bastards the money!!! Why haven't you gotten a new heart???
Sayla - I-I-I've been seeing Dr. Wimun and he says I'm okay.
Thanatorn was furious and tried to stand up, but when he tried to grab his crutches, they feel to the ground, causing Nani to startle and cry. Sayla immediately picked Nani up and tried to comfort her.
Sayla - P'Torn.. please calm down. I'll get the heart eventually, please. You're scaring our daughter.
Thanatorn - I can't believe those bastards!!!! I gave them their God damn money... I went to war.. I paid for it, and you're still wearing those damn devices!! NO!!
Sayla - Darling!! Please!! Calm down! I'm fine!
Thanatorn grabbed his crutches and stood himself up in a rage. He couldn't believe his eyes wheh he saw his wife still wearing those devices. It's like everything he did was in vain. He almost love his life, he almost lost his family and to only find out that nothing has change. Thanatorn walked towards the door and looked around for his keys.
Sayla - Where are you going, P'Torn?
Thanatorn - I'm going to the hospital!!!
Sayla - P'Torn... but.. what about your.. your.. leg?
Thanatorn looked down at himself and just remembered that he needed his right leg to drive, but his right leg is missing.
Thanatorn - Then you'll have to drive.
Sayla - P'Torn.. darling, please. I'm okay.. I'm fine. Let's talk about this later. Please sit down.
Thanatorn looked around in frustration and then continued to search for his keys.
Sayla - Darling.. you've just come home. Please sit down.
Thanatorn - Baby.. but I paid them.. I-I risked everything.
Sayla - But I'm okay right now, darling.
Just when Thanatorn was about to open his mouth, a beeping sound came from the beeper that sits on the kitchen counter. Sayla and Thanatorn looked at eachother in shock. That beeping sound meant that it was their que to go to the hospital for a transplant.
Sayla - P'Torn!!!! The beeper!!
Thanatorn wobbled over to the beeper and grabbed it and looked at it. The green light flashed on and off; that meant one thing, it was time to go to the hospital. Sayla ran into the nursery and grabbed Nani's diaper bag. And then to the kitchen to grab her milk supplies and baby foods. Thanatorn couldn't believe his ears. He made it just in time for her surgery.
Sayla - P'Torn, gimme a minute, let me call Arrisa to meet us at the hospital.
Sayla dialed Arrisa's number. She allowed it to ring for several rings, but it went to voicemail. Sayla left a message.
Arrisa.. the hospital beeped me. I've got a donor!! Your brother, Nani, and I are heading to the hospital. Please meet us there. Or call P'Torn's cell phone when you get this message, I'll probably be in surgery! K, love you. Bye.
When Sayla was done grabbing things, they headed to the car and Sayla drove them off to the hospital. Both their hearts were beating a mile a minute. This must be a dream come true, everything was coming into place. Thanatorn's back from war and Sayla's getting her new heart.
When they got to the Operation floor, a nurse greeted them right away.
Nurse - Mrs. Saylanee Thamadeth?
Sayla - Yes, that's me.
Nurse - Ma'dam come with me. We've go to prep you for surgery.
Thanatorn sat in the waiting room and craddled a sleeping Nani in arms and waited for the nurse to wheel Sayla out in the gurney on the way to surgery.
The nurse and crew members appeared from the prep room with Sayla on the gurney pushing her towards the operation room. Immediately Thanatorn stood up and hopped over to Sayla while still cradling his baby.
Thanatorn - I love you, baby.. I'll be right here waiting for you.
Sayla - I love you darling..
And then Thanatorn kissed her cheek and they wheeled her into the operation room. Thanatorn stepped back into the waiting room and sat down still holding on to Nani. He hugged her and then placed her in the stroller. He didn't realized how tired he was, so he rested his head on the seat and sighed. And after thinking about Sayla and the transplant, Thanatorn fell asleep. He was drifted in dreamland, wandering around white areas when some one shook his shoulders to wake him.
Arrisa - P'Torn.. P'Torn...
Thanatorn opened his eyes.
Thanatorn - Arrisa?
Arrisa - Yes.. P'Torn, it's me.
Thanatorn stood up and hugged his sister.
Arrisa - So happy you're home... P'Say is okay now. You don't have to worry anymore.
Thanatorn - Arrisa, thank you for watching over Sayla and Nani.
Arrisa - It was my pleasure P'Torn...
Thanatorn - I won't ever leave you guys anymore.
Arrisa - I know you won't.. you're the best father.. husband.. and brother... I love you. I've got to go now okay?
Thanatorn - Arrisa, where are you going?
Then suddenly, Thanatorn felt someone tap him on the shoulders. It was a nurse. He opened his eyes and looked around. He was still in the waiting room at the hospital. Weird. He thought Arrisa just woke him, but it was just a dream. Thanatorn looked at the nurse who was holding a laughing Nani. The nurse handed Nani back to him.
Nurse - She's a cutie.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Nurse - Sir, the operation is a success. Your wife is in recovery right now.
Thanatorn - Thank you, when can I see her?
Nurse - Dr. Wimun is on his way to see you right now. Please have a seat sir.
Thanatirn nodded and thanked the nurse again.
And then a minute later, Dr. Wimun appeared and extended his hand and shook Thanatorn's hand.
Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, would you please join me in my office?
Thanatorn placed Nani in the stroller and Dr. Wimun took the handle and helped Thanatorn push the stroller to his office.
Dr. Wimun - Please sit down.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Dr. Wimun - First off, Mrs. Thamadeth's surgery is a success. The healthy heart has been implanted. It will take about 6-9 months to fully recover. Afterwards, she will lead a normal and healthy life.
Thanatorn - I thought I'd never say this, but thank you afain doctor.
Dr. Wimun - You're welcome... Now, Mr. Thamadeth, I'd like to discuss something with you. Actually this is the very first time I will be discussing something that we normally keep confidential, however.. it is the donor's last request. And as a hospital of good faith, we have an obligation to carry the request on behave of the donor.
Thanatorn - That's great, because I'd like to have the name of the donor so I could thank the donor's family for extendeding my wife's life.
Dr. Wimun sighed. And then he reached into the files and pulled out a letter from the donor and placed it in front of Thanatorn. There were two letters, one to the administrator of the hospital and one to Thanatorn himself. By now Thanatorn was confused. He searched the doctor's.
Dr. Wimun - There was a fatal accident near the mall. The donor had a head-on collision with someone who was driving on the wrong side of the road. A few minutes after arrival, she died.

By the time he was done reading, his face was soaked with tears and the letters were stained from his tears. He was so strickened with grief and sorrow that he didn't even care if snot was running down his nose.
Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth... Please excuse me for a minute.. The nurse will be here in a few to take you to your wife okay.. ?
Thanatorn continued to cry while Nani sat in her stroller, just looking at her daddy. Dr. Wimun opened and closed the door behind him, leaving Thanatorn to weep.

When Thanatorn stepped into his home, a warmth washed over him. It felt so good being in a familiar place and with the women that he loves so much. The feelings were so overwhelming that he couldn't help, but cry. He stood there and wandered his eyes around, trying to take in as much as possible. Sayla saw that his tears were falling down, so she quickly wiped them for him. Being away at war took a toll on him. After watching everyone die around him, he knew that it was a glimpse of hell. And now that he's finally home, heaven was here again.
Sayla - P'Torn... ? Darling..?
Sayla wiped his tears and kissed his cheeks and wrapped her arms around him one more time.
Sayla - Let's go sit down. I'll get you something to drink okay.
Sayla helped Thanatorn sit on the couch and placed baby Nani on her rocker in front of him. When he sat down, he reached over to his daughter and carressed her face. Her skin feels so soft; it doesn't feel like the rough asphalt and dirt that he had to bury his face in for months just trying to escape the bombs and gunfire. When his daughter giggled and cooed back at him, that's when he knew he was home for good.
Sayla - Darling? What would you like to drink sweetie?
Thanatorn - Uhm.. anything you've got, baby..
Sayla - Okay.. I just made fresh sweet tea. I'll give you a nice cold glass okay?
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Sayla was beyond happy that her husband's home. But she did see that he has changed a bit. The Thanatorn that she met and married was vibrant and cheerful, but the Thanatorn she sees now seems distant and sad. She knew that perhaps she just needs to give him some time to adjust.
Sayla handed him the glass of ice tea and he thanked her with a smile. He took a small sip and placed it down on the coffe table. Though he is now in a familiar warm place, somehow he felt like a stranger in his own home. Everything looked exactly the same when he left, but after being surrounded by collpased buildings and busted metals and bombs and death, he felt a little uneasy. Sayla watched him as he tried to adjust himself. She knew he felt awkward, so she quickly tried to make him feel at home.
Sayla - Darling... I'm so happy today.. Seeing you makes me feel safe and at ease.
Thanatorn - I'm.. I'm happy too. Our daughter.. she got so big.
Sayla - Yes, hehe... she's quite the eater. I think she eats more than I do!
Sayla laughed and waited for Thanatorn to laughed too, but he just did a little chuckle and then held on to his own hands.
Sayla - Uhmm.. ohh.. here, let me take off your jacket for you.
Sayla took a hold of his jacket and allowed him to lean forward so she could take them off for him.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Sayla - P'Torn.. While you watch Nani.. I'm going to continue preparing some things in the kitchen okay?
Thanatorn - Ohh? I..I watch Nani?
Sayla - Yes..
Thanatorn - But.. but.. I..
Sayla - Silly, you don't have to do much. All you've got to do is keep an eye on her for me.
Thanatorn - But what if she cries.. and I get save her??!!!
Thanatorn's eyes began to tear up.
Thanatorn - What if I let her slip and I can't save her? What if they come and get her???!!!
Thanatorn grabbed his head nervously and ran his fingers through his hair as if he was about to lose control. It looked as if he was afraid of something reliving a nightmare that he probably went through.
Sayla was a bit startled by his reaction. She moved over to sit by him and grabbed his shoulders.
Sayla - P'Torn??!! P'Torn??!! Darling!! It's okay! You're at home now!!
Thanatorn paused and then he looked around him to make sure he was safe. When he realized that he was indeed home, he searched Sayla's face frantically.
Thanatorn - I.. I.. What's happening to me??!!!
Thanatorn buried his face into Sayla's chest and weeped.
Sayla - Darlinng... you're... safe now. You're home with me.. with Nani.. and with Arrisa.
That's when Thanatorn felt the devices on her chest. He raised from her chest and took a hold of her collar, and started to unbuttoned it.
Sayla - Darling, what are you doing?
Thanatorn didn't answer her, but instead kept on unbuttoning her blouse. When he was done unbuttoning, he pulled her shirt open to expose her chest. To his horror, she was still wearing those devices. His eyes widened in shock and then he searched her face. Sayla quickly took a hold of her shirt and buttoned herself up.
Thanatorn - What's the meaning of this?!!
Sayla - Uhh... they.. they...
Thanatorn - I already gave those bastards the money!!! Why haven't you gotten a new heart???
Sayla - I-I-I've been seeing Dr. Wimun and he says I'm okay.
Thanatorn was furious and tried to stand up, but when he tried to grab his crutches, they feel to the ground, causing Nani to startle and cry. Sayla immediately picked Nani up and tried to comfort her.
Sayla - P'Torn.. please calm down. I'll get the heart eventually, please. You're scaring our daughter.
Thanatorn - I can't believe those bastards!!!! I gave them their God damn money... I went to war.. I paid for it, and you're still wearing those damn devices!! NO!!
Sayla - Darling!! Please!! Calm down! I'm fine!
Thanatorn grabbed his crutches and stood himself up in a rage. He couldn't believe his eyes wheh he saw his wife still wearing those devices. It's like everything he did was in vain. He almost love his life, he almost lost his family and to only find out that nothing has change. Thanatorn walked towards the door and looked around for his keys.
Sayla - Where are you going, P'Torn?
Thanatorn - I'm going to the hospital!!!
Sayla - P'Torn... but.. what about your.. your.. leg?
Thanatorn looked down at himself and just remembered that he needed his right leg to drive, but his right leg is missing.
Thanatorn - Then you'll have to drive.
Sayla - P'Torn.. darling, please. I'm okay.. I'm fine. Let's talk about this later. Please sit down.
Thanatorn looked around in frustration and then continued to search for his keys.
Sayla - Darling.. you've just come home. Please sit down.
Thanatorn - Baby.. but I paid them.. I-I risked everything.
Sayla - But I'm okay right now, darling.
Just when Thanatorn was about to open his mouth, a beeping sound came from the beeper that sits on the kitchen counter. Sayla and Thanatorn looked at eachother in shock. That beeping sound meant that it was their que to go to the hospital for a transplant.
Sayla - P'Torn!!!! The beeper!!
Thanatorn wobbled over to the beeper and grabbed it and looked at it. The green light flashed on and off; that meant one thing, it was time to go to the hospital. Sayla ran into the nursery and grabbed Nani's diaper bag. And then to the kitchen to grab her milk supplies and baby foods. Thanatorn couldn't believe his ears. He made it just in time for her surgery.
Sayla - P'Torn, gimme a minute, let me call Arrisa to meet us at the hospital.
Sayla dialed Arrisa's number. She allowed it to ring for several rings, but it went to voicemail. Sayla left a message.
Arrisa.. the hospital beeped me. I've got a donor!! Your brother, Nani, and I are heading to the hospital. Please meet us there. Or call P'Torn's cell phone when you get this message, I'll probably be in surgery! K, love you. Bye.
When Sayla was done grabbing things, they headed to the car and Sayla drove them off to the hospital. Both their hearts were beating a mile a minute. This must be a dream come true, everything was coming into place. Thanatorn's back from war and Sayla's getting her new heart.
When they got to the Operation floor, a nurse greeted them right away.
Nurse - Mrs. Saylanee Thamadeth?
Sayla - Yes, that's me.
Nurse - Ma'dam come with me. We've go to prep you for surgery.
Thanatorn sat in the waiting room and craddled a sleeping Nani in arms and waited for the nurse to wheel Sayla out in the gurney on the way to surgery.
The nurse and crew members appeared from the prep room with Sayla on the gurney pushing her towards the operation room. Immediately Thanatorn stood up and hopped over to Sayla while still cradling his baby.
Thanatorn - I love you, baby.. I'll be right here waiting for you.
Sayla - I love you darling..
And then Thanatorn kissed her cheek and they wheeled her into the operation room. Thanatorn stepped back into the waiting room and sat down still holding on to Nani. He hugged her and then placed her in the stroller. He didn't realized how tired he was, so he rested his head on the seat and sighed. And after thinking about Sayla and the transplant, Thanatorn fell asleep. He was drifted in dreamland, wandering around white areas when some one shook his shoulders to wake him.
Arrisa - P'Torn.. P'Torn...
Thanatorn opened his eyes.
Thanatorn - Arrisa?
Arrisa - Yes.. P'Torn, it's me.
Thanatorn stood up and hugged his sister.
Arrisa - So happy you're home... P'Say is okay now. You don't have to worry anymore.
Thanatorn - Arrisa, thank you for watching over Sayla and Nani.
Arrisa - It was my pleasure P'Torn...
Thanatorn - I won't ever leave you guys anymore.
Arrisa - I know you won't.. you're the best father.. husband.. and brother... I love you. I've got to go now okay?
Thanatorn - Arrisa, where are you going?
Then suddenly, Thanatorn felt someone tap him on the shoulders. It was a nurse. He opened his eyes and looked around. He was still in the waiting room at the hospital. Weird. He thought Arrisa just woke him, but it was just a dream. Thanatorn looked at the nurse who was holding a laughing Nani. The nurse handed Nani back to him.
Nurse - She's a cutie.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Nurse - Sir, the operation is a success. Your wife is in recovery right now.
Thanatorn - Thank you, when can I see her?
Nurse - Dr. Wimun is on his way to see you right now. Please have a seat sir.
Thanatirn nodded and thanked the nurse again.
And then a minute later, Dr. Wimun appeared and extended his hand and shook Thanatorn's hand.
Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, would you please join me in my office?
Thanatorn placed Nani in the stroller and Dr. Wimun took the handle and helped Thanatorn push the stroller to his office.
Dr. Wimun - Please sit down.
Thanatorn - Thank you.
Dr. Wimun - First off, Mrs. Thamadeth's surgery is a success. The healthy heart has been implanted. It will take about 6-9 months to fully recover. Afterwards, she will lead a normal and healthy life.
Thanatorn - I thought I'd never say this, but thank you afain doctor.
Dr. Wimun - You're welcome... Now, Mr. Thamadeth, I'd like to discuss something with you. Actually this is the very first time I will be discussing something that we normally keep confidential, however.. it is the donor's last request. And as a hospital of good faith, we have an obligation to carry the request on behave of the donor.
Thanatorn - That's great, because I'd like to have the name of the donor so I could thank the donor's family for extendeding my wife's life.
Dr. Wimun sighed. And then he reached into the files and pulled out a letter from the donor and placed it in front of Thanatorn. There were two letters, one to the administrator of the hospital and one to Thanatorn himself. By now Thanatorn was confused. He searched the doctor's.
Dr. Wimun - There was a fatal accident near the mall. The donor had a head-on collision with someone who was driving on the wrong side of the road. A few minutes after arrival, she died.

Epilogue
Thanatorn held his breath as he stood there watching Arrisa's coffin being lowered into the ground. The weather didn't help much either. The grey skies were low and moved slowly as if it knew that someone's life was taken away. He couldn't believe that once again, he is burying one of his loved ones so soon. His heart ached to see her face just one more time; if he could just hug his sister right now, he'd give anything. It was awful that he didn't even get to see her since his return, and when he left to war, Arrisa was angry at him. He hoped and prayed that somehow Arrisa forgave him. Thanatorn took a deep breath and no matter how hard he tried to hold in his tears, it just fell down his cheeks as if they had a life of their own.
Sayla held on to her chest where Arrisa's heart rests and cried. She felt honored to have Arrisa's heart. She felt grateful, but if it meant that Arrisa would still be alive today, she'd rather give it back. And no matter how many times Thanatorn reassured her, Sayla felt guilty for everything that has happened in their family. But how can she help having a bad heart? And how can she help having such a wonderful family that loves her so much that they would give up even their hearts? Sayla vowed that Arrisa's death wouldn't be in vain. She vowed to guard Arrisa's heart with her life and take care of it forever.
It has been concluded that Arrisa died in a car accident. The other driver lives, but have since been charged with manslaughter. At least some kind of justice was served, but that wasn't what Thanatorn wanted. He'd rather have her here with him.
After the funeral, Thanatorn and Sayla went into Arrisa's room to clear some things out. They wanted to keep things the way it was, because it felt like any day now Arrisa would just walk through the door, but they knew it was impossible. Sayla stood there and looked around and couldn't help, but tear up.
Sayla - P'Torn... I-I-can't.. it's too hard for me. Is it okay if you continue by yourself?
Thanatorn - Yes.. just go get some rest baby.. I'll continue here.
Sayla - Thank you darling... I love you.
Sayla wiped her tears and left Arrisa's room, leaving Thanatorn to go through Arrisa's things and try to decide what to do with them. Thanatorn could almost feel her presence as he stood there, wondering what to do next. And then when he looked over to the bed, he caght a glimpse of picture frames on both sides of the bed. On the left side was a photo of Sayla and Nani and on the right side, there was a picture frame of Thanatorn and herself. Thanatorn smiled and tears fell down his face as he appraoched the bed and sat down next to the picture frame. He took a hold of the frame and stared at the picture. He could remember that moment that it was taken. It was during his birthday last year. the picture was snapped while Arrisa was putting cake icing all over his face. After looking at the photo, he placed it back on the drawer.
Thanatorn sighed and pulled open the drawers. There were a few documents in there. He took a deep breath and pulled out the documents to read them. They were medical papers and a driver's licensing change. Those papers revealed that just a month after Thanatorn left for war, Arrisa went to the clinic and took a bunch of tests. He couldn't believe that she was the perfect match for Sayla. And then it looked like Arrisa went and updated her driver's license to become an organ donor. Now he knew for certain that Arrisa went and did all of this in case she died. She wanted Sayla to have her heart, so that her heart can be with them always. Thanatorn placed all of her paperwork back in the drawer and decided not to touch any of things for now. He stood up and looked around one last time and left the room.
2 years later..........
Nurse - Push!!!! Mrs. Thamadeth!! Take a deep breath.. push!!!!
Thanatorn held onto his wife's hand, trying to encourage her to push.
Dr. Thanh - I see her head!!! One more push!!!
Thanatorn - C'mon baby.. we're almost there, push baby!
Sayla - Ahhhhh!!!!!! Darling!!!
Thanatorn - I'm here baby.. I'm here.
Thanatorn bent down and kissed her forehead.
Dr. Thanh - She's coming!! I see her!!!
And then within a second, Thanatorn and Arrisa's second child was delivered. The nurse and doctor quickly worked on the baby girl and got her cleaned up. The nurse wrapped the baby in a pink blanket and then handed her over to her happy parents.
Nani and one of Sayla's friend was waiting anxiously when a nurse poked her head out from the dilivery room and signalled to them that they can now come in.
Carrie - You hear that Nani?? Your sister is here! Let's go.
Nani - Otay.. I want to see my sister.
When they got inside the room, Nani ran into her daddy's arms.
Thanatorn - Look sweetheart, your little sister.
Nani - Wow!
Sayla held onto her baby and kissed her cheek.
Nurse - Mr. and Mrs. Thamadeth, I'm preparing the birth certificate right now. Do you have a name for your new baby girl?
Thanatorn and Sayla looked at eachother and smiled warmly and both told the nurse the name of their baby at the same time.
Arrisa Thamadeth is her name.

girl , im still at 17 . I will finsh reading this week . Im kind of dazzle with "Twilight" at the moment . My mind haven't full set to fiction mode yet . It very crazy to be like dis . I'm so not a muitl-task person , i get distracted so easily and it take a while to return back to focus .

^^ I was dazzled by Edward too, but after 2 days.. I'm a little over it now.. cause well.. lol.. I'm too old for Edward and the whole high school love thing.. I'm still thinking about his daddy though. hahaha

too bad humans don't live that long anymore... but we used to be able to live till 300 years old. thanks to adam and eve, now we dead by 80 something!
