Part I

Thanatorn was filled with eagerness as he tapped impatiently on the steering wheel waiting in traffic. He had gotten a phone call from his sister, Arrisa that his wife Sayla was about to go into labor. The rush hour traffic seemed only to move an inch as he ran fingers nervously through his hair and cursed under his breath. If he missed the birth of his baby girl, he would just scream! He's been waiting for this moment forever ever since Sayla told him that she was carrying their first child. It was just a dream come true, considering all of the misrery and hardship that they had to go through.

Just last year, the doctors told them that Sayla wouldn't be able to conceive due to her immune problems. They had come to a realization and had somewhat accepted their fate, however a miracle happened when Sayla realized that she was pregnant.

Thanatorn - Come on, come on!!! What's taking so goddamn long!!

Thanatorn stuck his head out the window and started honking repeatedly hoping that traffic would move. And the grey clouds weren't helping much either as it threatened rain, drizzling little by little. He sat back down and looked over to the passenger seat, making sure that the 2 dozen roses that he bought for his wife was still there, safe and sound. The cellphone then vibrated in his pocket. He anxiously answered it, hoping that he wasn't too late.

Thanatorn - Hello??

Arrisa - P'Torn, where are you??? You better hurry up, cause Sayla's about to go into labor!! They're gonna take her really soon!

Thanatorn - I know, I know! I'm stuck in traffic. I'm only a few blocks away, but I'm in a gridlock!

Arrisa - Okay.. hopefully, you'll get here in time.

Thanatorn - Me too. Hey, Arrisa... look after Sayla okay?? I'll try to get there as soon as I can!

Arrisa - Okay, P'Torn. Bye.

Shit! He uttered loudly. The car infront of him then moved forward, but not enough to go anywhere.

*********

The sound of the machine beeping and the stench of medicines didn't help at all as Sayla tried to catch her breath. Each contraction was like a plier, plying her open. When thy came on, she had to hold her breath for dear life, or else the feeling of her pelvic and midsection felt as though it was going to kill her. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh........Sayla cried when the contractions came on again. She squeezed Arrisa's hand tightly as she yelped out in pain, but all the while looking towards the door for Thantorn to walk through it.

Arrisa - P'Say, just hold on okay..

Sayla - Where's Thanatorn? Did you call him?

She spoke as she clench her teeth and sweat dripping down her forehead, eventhough the hospital room was 67 degrees.

Arrisa - P'say, he's on his way. He's stuck in traffic, but he's coming okay?

Sayla - Oh no.. I hope he makes it in time.

Arrisa - He will.

Sayla - I really want him to--AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Sayla's sentence was interrupted as a huge contraction erupted. That's when the monitor beeped loudly and repeatedly, causing a nurse to enter the room. The nurse went over to the graph that montored the baby's heart and Sayla's contractions. When she read the graph, she raised her eyebrows and called in another nurse.

Nurse #2 - What's up? Is she 5 centimeters yet?

Nurse #1 - No, she's still at 2, but I'm just a little concern, because baby's heart rate is rapid and the contractions are coming in one after another, but still she hasn't dialacted much since 2 hours.

The nurse was then interruppted by another loud yelp from Sayla.

Sayla - Oh God... it hurts so much!!!

Arrisa - Nurse, what's going on?? Is this normal?

The machine then flashed a red light, causing the nurses to scramble around grabbing some supplies.

Nurse #1 - Quick, call Dr. Sompun!!! We're gonna have to give her an IV. Grab that for me over there!

Nurse #2 reached inside a drawer and pulled out a needle.

Arrisa - What's going on????

Arrisa searched the nurses faces frantically as Sayla wailed continuously in pain.

Nurse #2 - We may need to do an emergency C-section. The baby is not taking the contractions too lightly, and Sayla's heart rate is pretty low for some odd reason. We'll know for sure once the doctor gets here.

Arrisa - Well?? When will he get here???

Nurse #1 - We just paged him, he should be here any minute.

The nurse quickly searched for a vein on Sayla's hand and stuck her with a needle. Doctor Sompun entered the room and quickly went over to Sayla and read the monitor. sayla kept wailing as the pain became intolerable. She also started to feel naseauted and her head became very heavy and all of a sudden she started panting. That's when the nurse covered her face with an oxygen mask. Arrisa just stood back in horror, not knowing what to do.

Dr. Sompun - What do we have here?

Nurse #1 - Somethings wrong doctor. Baby's heart rate is fast, but Mother's rate is low.

Dr. Sompun drew up some liquids from a vile with a large needle and then shotted it into Sayla's arm. He then felt around Sayla's midsection while she wailed in pain and seemed to be going into unconciousness. Her lips quivered and her skin became pale.

Dr. Sompun - Nurse, page the Anathesialogist! We've got to get this baby out quick!

More nurses came in.

Dr. Smmpun - Let's get her out of here, let's go, let's go!!

That's when the nurses and the doctor quickly pushed the gurney out of the room and down the hall into Emergency Surgery.

Arrisa was left behindm standing there alone and breathless as she held onto her chest, feeling overwhelmed and worried for her sister-in-law and her niece. The nurses or doctor didn't give her much detail as to what's going on. Arrisa walked out of the room and had to lean on the wall for support. She reached into her purse, wondering if she should notify Thanatorn about what just happened or wait till he get's here. She could only imagine as to what's happening in that surgery room as she hoped and pray that everything will be okay.

Part II

Ten minutes later, Thanatorn finally arrived at the hospital. Even before his car came into a full park, he grabbed the 2 dozen roses, swung open the door, and dodged out, not caring that the pouring rain was getting him wet. Thanatorn headed straight to the reception to ask where the maternity floor was located.

As he ran into an elevator, some of the rose petals had fallen along the way. Thanatorn pressed on the buttons nervously as the elevator door closed and took him to his destination. His heart was beating a mile a minute as the elevator's dings each floor that he reached. When he got to the maternity warrd, he dodged out of the elevator, running down the hallway towards the ward, leaving a trail of rose petals. When he got to the end of the hallway, immediately he spotted Arrisa sitting in the waiting room, and biting her fingernails and looking as if she was the one about to give birth.

Arrisa - P'Torn!!

Arrisa leaped over and hugged her brother and held on tight for a few minutes.

Torn - Where's Sayla? Did she give birth yet? Where's her room? Take me to her!

Arrisa - P'Torn.. she's she's...

Torn - She's what?? Gave birth already? Where's my baby girl?! How's the baby?? How's Sayla?

Torn grinned widely, still holding on to the roses thinking his wife already gave birth, not caring if he had missed it or not as long as his wife and daughter were doing fine.

Arrisa - Uhh... P'Torn, she didn't give birth yet.

Torn - Aow.. okay.. okay, that's good then. I made it in time. What room is Sayla in? And why are you sitting out here, Arrisa? I thought I told you to stay with Sayla the whole time??

Arrisa bit her lip and looked down to the floor.

Arrisa - P'Torn, err...

Torn - What is it???

Arrisa - P'Say is in surgery right now.

Torn - Why?? I thought the doctor said she's going to deliver naturally?!

Arrisa - Uhh.. she's in the emergen--

That's when a nurse walked by and Torn flagged her down.

Torn - Excuse me nurse, my wife checked in here a few hours ago.. Saylanee Thamadeth is her name.

Nurse - Oh. Mrs. Thamadeth, she's still in the Emergency Surgery room, sir. The doctors are still working on her right now.

Torn - Huh???? What did you say, nurse???? Emergency Surgery?? Are they delivering the baby right now?

He glanced over to Arrisa in confusion, searching his sister's face and the nurse's face for answers. Arrisa looked down and bit her lip.

Nurse - Yes, Mr. Thamadeth. Your wife had to have an emergency c-section.

Torn - What do you mean emergency c-section??

Nurse - That means, the doctors feel that it is crucial to take the baby out of her by c-section. There are some complications.

Torn - What kind of complications?? How's my wife? Is she okay? How's my baby!!???? What the hell is going on here?!!!

He shot a glare at Arrisa as the nurse tried to explain to him the situation.

Torn - Arrisa, why didn't you tell me this??

Arrisa - P'Torn, I..I.. didn't want you to be up--

Torn - You should have called me!!! I would have gotten out of that goddamn traffic on foot!!! Where is my wife??? Take me to her!

Nurse - I'm sorry sir, as of now I do not have those answers. Please wait for the doctors--as soon as they are done with surgery they will inform you.

Torn - No, no, no! Nurse, take me to the surgery room! I have to be there for my wife and my baby!

Nurse - Sir, i'm afraid you can't go into the emergency surgery room. Wait here okay, as soon as I know something, I'll come back and update you. You'll have to excuse me, I've got to go.

Torn - Wait!!! Nurse!! Nurse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come back!!! God damn it!!

It was no use, the nurse had already disappeared down the hallway.

Arrisa - P'Torn, I'm sorry. I tried to stay with her, but the doctors took her away quickly and they wouldn't let me stay with her. I...I.. didn't call you, because.. I didn't want you to get upset on the road.

Thanatorn just sood there with his back turned towards his sister, not answering, but only cupping his head in a panick. The rose petals fell down one by one as he flinched his eyes, trying his hardest not to lose it. All the unanswered questions were killing him. What is going on in that surgery room? Why won't they let him see her? What will he do if he loses his precious Saylanee? And what about his baby girl? What if he loses both of the two girls he loves? All these thoughts made his legs weak, making him stagger towards a chair. He dropped the flowers onto another chair and sat down. He bent foward, and held onto his head, trying to hide his face, so no one, not including his sister could see the tears dripping down from his eyes.

Arrisa approached her brother slowly, sat next to him, and rubbed his back as he weeped silently while she cried out herself. Five years ago, Arrisa and Thanatorn were sitting exactly like this at a hospital waiting to hear the fate of their parents whom just got into a car accident, only to hear of their death after that. It was dejavu all over again, and this time it was too much to bear. Thanatorn's heart was beating fast and loud, even Arrisa could hear it.

Twenty minutes later, a doctor appeared from the hallway. Thanatorn saw him, grabbed the roses, and stood up from his seat, not wasting anytime , he ran towards the doctor.

Torn - How is she????????

Doctor Sompun - Are you Mr. Thamadeth?

Torn - Yes!! I'm her husband.

Doctor Sompun - We have successfully delivered your very healthy baby girl. She's being prepped right now in the nursery.

Torn immediately smiled and was relieved. He couldn't believe that he's finally a father.

Torn - Sayla must be really happy.

Arrisa - Hehe.. see, P'Torn.. I knew everything will be fine. And we were worried for nothing.

The doctor cleared his throat and interrupted the siblings as they reassured eachother.

Doctor Sompun - The baby is doing very well, however.... Mrs. Thamadeth is still in ICU.

That's when Thanatorn's face did a complete 360 and turned upside down. Arrisa gasps and covered her mouth with a hand.

Torn - I'm sorry, doctor, but you said they were healthy?!!

Doctor Sompun - The baby is healthy, but I'm afraid your wife will need to be seen by a cardiologist. The emergency c-section was performed, because Mrs. Thamdeth was in danger when we found that heart wasn't beating at a normal rate. It was very irratic. If we hadn't performed the surgery, the results could have been fatal for both mother and baby. Dr. Yeerman, our resident cardiologist is on his way right now. Once dr. Yeerman sees her, we'll get a definite answer as what's wrong with Mrs. Thamadeth.

Thanatorn dropped the roses and staggered back, not wanting to believe what he just heard. The doctor apologized and excused himself, leaving the siblings in shock. Arrisa quickly grabbed onto her brother and embraced him as he cried onto her shoulders. I'm sure she'll be okay, Arrisa reassured, not only Thanatorn, but herself as well. They could only wonder as to what uncertanty was ahead of them.

Part III

Thantorn's heart was beating through his chest while he followed the nurse to the nursery. Arrisa could only hope and pray for her brother's sake as she somberly walked behind her brother, wishing that things were different. Ever since their parents died, Thanatorn assumed the role of both parents for her; he worked really hard to take care of her, and for that she will always be grateful, loving her brother to death. She sighed as she watched her brother walk along with his head slouched down. If only she could take away his pains, her life would be complete, she thought.

His heart and mind was overwhelmed with so many different kinds of emotions that he could literally feel that vein on his temple throb as he prepares to meet his daughter. This wasn't how he envisioned the homecoming of his baby. He pictured himself holding Sayla's hands and encouraging her as she pushes baby Nani through her womb and into the world. And as the doctor handed the baby to them, he pictured himself kissing and holding both his wife and baby into his arms. But instead, he is now walking down a cold hallway, smelling the stench of sickness and medicines. He felt so cold and tired as he longed for that picture perfect moment, but he had to snapped into reality.

Nurse Julie - We're here, Mr. Thamadeth. Wait right here okay? Let me get your baby.

Arrisa squeezed her brother's hand as they waited for the baby to arrive.

Arrisa - P'Torn, I can't wait to see Nani. I bet she looks like you.

Arrisa chuckled, trying to lightened up the mood, but Thanatorn could only force a half smile for his sister. How can he smile when all he thinks about is his wife? He was still clueless as to what's really wrong with his wife. The worst part is not being able to see her since she is still in ICU waiting for Dr. Yeerman. Nurse Julie then appeared from the nusery holding a tiny bundle of joy snugged in a pink blanket.

Julie - There we are baby Nani. Here's daddy.

The nurse smiled as she handed Nani to her daddy.

Awwwww, she's so pretty, P'Torn, Arrisa uttered happily.

Immediately, when Thanatorn laid eyes on his daughter, his heart melted and tears formed behind his tired eyes. Even through the distress and pain, he couldn't help but smiled widely as the baby wiggled around softly in his arms. She appeared to be looking right at her daddy, eventhough her vision was still blurry. Thanatorn stuck his index finger into her little palms as he cradled his baby gentle and smiled. He felt so proud, felt so good as he held his daughter; his creation. He then realized how much she looks like Sayla. Her cheeks so soft and rosy, eyes dark and round, a split image of the woman he loves.

Daddy's here. Daddy love you, he uttered and vowing to himself that he will do anything and everything in his power to protect his little girl and his wife.

My turn, Arrisa suggested as she took the baby out of her brothers arms.

That's when it became clear to him again. Sayla hasn't even seen their precious baby yet, instead she's still in ICU awaiting the cardiologist and conciousness. How can this happen? This was suppose to be the happiest day of their lives, but instead it is bitter sweet. Thanatorn sighed, feeling a wave of sadness enter his heart as he tried to overcome it.

The nurse appeared again.

Nurse Julie - Mr. Thamadeth? Dr. Yeerman finished examining Mrs. Thamadeth and he is ready to see you now.

Thanatorn - What about my wife?? Has she awaken yet? Could I see her?

Nurse Julie - You'll have to find that out from the doctor, sir.

Arrisa kissed Nani and handed her back to Nurse Julie. We'll be back okay, little Nani? Aunty love you.

After returning Nani to the nursery, Nurse Julie led the siblings to the doctor's office. Dr. Yeerman greeted them and shook their hands. Thanatorn didn't waste any time and went right to the questions.

Thantorn - Doctor, how's my wife? I want to see her.

Dr. Yeerman - Mr. Thamadeth, your wife is stable right now, and she should be coming out of unconciousness any minute.

Thanatorn - That's good! I want to see her, doctor.

Dr. Yeerman - Mr. Thamadeth, before you visit your wife, there's some things we've got to discuss first okay?

Thanatorn nodded blankly.

Dr. Yeerman - First off, I would like to reassure you that she will recover and be able to go home eventually, however she will be very weak for the first few months, not only from recovering from the c-section, but also from the temporary work I did on her heart.

Thanatorn - I don't understand doctor, what's wrong with her heart??

Dr. Yeerman - Mrs. Thamadeth has an untreated hole in the heart. It appears to have been there for awhile. I have temporarily implanted a device to patch it up, however, in order to fix the problem permenantly, she must have a heart transplant.

Thanatorn sat back weakly and ran nervous fingers through his hair. No wonder Sayla's been so weak the last few years. She often sleeps and have major migranes and perhaps that's the reason for the immune issues, making it hard for her to concieve, but nevetheless, a miracle happened when she became pregnant with Nani.

He felt as though the ground underneath him had just crumpled. His world shook and scattered into a million poeces. Arrisa gasps and covered her mouth with shakey hands as tears streamed down her face. She couldn't help, but feel sorrow since she loves Sayla dearly, like a mother and sister she longed for. She couldn't bear seeing her brother so broken up like this either.

Thanatorn's voice became shakey. He didn't want to dare ask the question, but he knew he had to.

Thanatorn - Doctor.. what happens if she doesn't get a transplant?

Dr. Yeerman - Mr. Thamadeth, I'm going to be frank with you. If she does not get this transplant, then, I'm sorry, but it could mean her life.

Thanatorn - Then what do we do doctor?? When will you give her this transplant?

Dr. Yeerman - I've prepared some paperwork for you to sign, Mr. Thamadeth. Your wife has been placed on a list to receive a donor's heart that matches her blood type and marrow.

Thanatorn paused and became stiff, not wanting to ask his next question at all. He swallowed the big lump in his throat as his stomach did a flip flop.

Thanatorn - Doctor, just how long will it take to get a donor heart?

Dr. Yeerman - It depends on how we could find a match. It could take a few weeks, a few months, or even years. And there's also the cost, Mr. Thamadeth. The transplant alone is $100,000. I see here that your wife is covered under your insurance. However, they only pay 50%, so the rest will be coming out of your pocket.

Thantorn - What???!!! This is ridiculous!! I pay $100 a month for this god damn healthcare, but it only covers 50%???? That's absurd!!!! How can this be, doctor? There must be a mistake!

Dr. Yeerman - Mr. Thamadeth, that, you'll have to speak with human resource at your place of employment okay? Now, I've got some documents for you to sign. After that, I'll bring you to Mrs. Thamadeth.

Thanatorn sighed heavily and signed the documents. His heart felt so heavy, worried about the donor heart, and wonders where he'll find $50,000 to pay for her operation. Arrisa felt so helpless as she squeezed his shoulders.

Dr. Yeerman - Okay, thank you, Mr. Thamadeth. When we find a donor, we will contact you immediately. We will proceed with the operation, however, the fee will need to be paid three months after okay? And now, before I take you to her, I would like to explain and make it clear that Mrs. Thamadeth stays stressfree. This is very very important okay? Any sort of distress could hurt her condition. She must get a lot of rest and get plenty of fluids and she needs to stay on a healthy diet consisting of plenty of iron. Right now, Mrs. Thamadeth is still clueless to her condition--we want to go ahead and keep it that way for now. On her follow up appointment, we'll explain everything.

Thanatorn and Arrisa agreed to all of the doctor's orders. After signing all documents and agreeing to the orders, Dr. Yeerman led the siblings to a hospital room where Sayla rested.

Thanatorn entered the room and was surprised to see his wife already sitting up half way, cradling the baby and smiled happily, clueless to her fate. A nurse stood by the bed, waiting to assist Sayla with the baby as she enjoyed her daughter, eventhough she was very weak. Her lips were chapped, but she wasn't as pale as before.

You're Mommy's little girl, Sayla whispered and smiled.

When Sayla realized that Thantorn and Arrisa arrived, she looked up from the baby and immediately there were sparkles in her eyes; she was so happy to see Thanatorn. Her voice was coarsed and weak, but she still managed to greet them.

Sayla - Thanatorn....Arrisa... So glad you guys are here. Look at how cute Nani is. She's got your eyes, darling.

Thanatorn forced a smile, remembering Dr. Yeerman's orders. He wanted to fully be happy, but he just couldn't bring himself to relax. He should be happy that she's now stable, but how can he? When he knows the problem was only fixed temporarily. Arrisa interupted, trying to play off her brother's emotions, so that Sayla wouldn't noticed anything.

Arrisa - Uhh.. Err...hehe.. yes.. P'Say, Nani does have P'Torn's eyes, but she looks mostly like you.

Sayla - Oh yeah, she does doesn't she? Cause she's Mommy's little angel.

The nurse left the room to give the family a little privacy. Thanatorn moved closer to his wife and baby, and then sat next to her on the bed, and wrapped his arms around both his wife and daughter tightly. I love you both so very much, he uttered, trying to hold back his tears. Sayla chuckled and admired her daughter and relaxed into Thanatorn's chest, cleluess to his raging emotions, since he hid it so well. Arrisa sighed as she tried to hold back her own tears, not knowing what the future holds.

Part IV

The next few weeks of bringing home baby was quite a challenge, since Sayla wasn't fully herself. She knew an operation was done to her, but she wasn't aware of what extent was behind it. She had no clue that any given minute, she could easily collapse and cling to dear life. Arrisa and Thanatorn stayed close by, making sure not to keep their eyes off of Sayla and the baby, acting suspicious as if the darkness was going to swallow her whole.

It was an odd week of chaos and lots and lots of baby wailing. It seems like somehow Mother Nature wanted to say something, because ever since the baby was brought home, it never stopped raining.

While Saya was breastfeeding Nani, Thanatorn stood by, pretending to be busy clearing out the diaper drawer, but all the while frequently glancing over to his wife.

Sayla - Ahem... darling, what are you doing? Mind giving me and Nani a little privacy?

Thanatorn gave a boyish smile, and scratched his head thinking of an excuse, careful not to reveal the real reason why he's been so on edge.

Thanatorn - Uhh... I'm just.. uhh... cleaning out the diaper drawer. Yeah..

Sayla - Oh.. darling, you don't have to. I'll take care of that, besides I don't think it needs cleaning out. There are only diapers in there. So you're free to go do your thing, darling. I'll finish nursing Nani and put her to bed and I'll join you.

She reasured him, but doesn't seem like he's budging. And when he was about to open his mouth to give another excuse, Arrisa appeared into the room and ready to tackle the baby. Sayla raised her eyebrows, wondering what's going on with these two. They're lingering around her like white on rice.

Arrisa - Hello guys! How's Nani?

Sayla - She's about to sleep... though, she'll probably sleep faster if the two of you would leave for now.

Sayla smiled sweetly at the siblings.

Arrisa - But, I'm here in case you need help, P'Sayla.

Thanatorn - So am I, baby!!

Thanatorn blurted out.

Sayla looked down at a sleeping Nani, and lowered her voice, motioning the other two to lower theirs as well.

Sayla - You guys.. I know you just want to help, but uhh..

Thanatorn - Here, baby.. let me take Nani and put her in the crib for you.

Thanatorn grabbed a hold of his daughter and carried her gently to the crib, while he signalled Arrisa to help Sayla get up from her seat. Sayla was confused. They are practically waiting on her hands and foot, but she never pushed them only, but instead accepted their gestures, thinking perhaps that the baby has gotten them this way.

Arrisa - Here, P'Say.. take my hand. Let's go rest and snack on something while Nani sleeps. Sayla nodded and allowed Arrisa to lead her out of the nursery.

A few minutes later Thanatorn appeared from the nursery and went and gave Sayla a kiss on the forehead and sat next to her while Arrisa went to the kitchen to grab a snack for them.

Thanatorn - Baby, you're doing so well... are you tired? Do you need something?

Sayla - Darling... I think you're the one that needs rest. You and Arrisa actually; you guys have been running around nonstop.

Thanatorn - We just want to make sure you and Nani are comfortable, baby. I love you. You're such a beautiful mother, baby..

Sayla - I love you too, darling...but..

Thanatorn kissed his wife again interupting her protest, making Sayla chuckle with suspecions. Sayla knew her husband is an affection person, but he wasn't this affection.

Sayla - Darling... I'm fine.. but I do appreciation both you and Arrisa.

Sayla sighed and reached for the remote control to the television, wanting to get an update on the incident happening south of the nation. Instead, Thanatorn beat her to it.

Thanatorn - Baby, I've got it. I don't want you to move, you need rest. You've worked so hard with our baby, taking good care of her.

Sayla - Thanks, darling. I' am glad that little Nani's asleep. She gave us a good cry today didn't she?

The television glared on and Arrisa appeared from the kitchen with drinks and snacks. Immediately, the news broadcast flashed with an important annoucement. The three then turned their complete attention to the television set.

NEWS FLASH!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, President Sukham Sone has declared war on us. The piece of land that has been landlocked between the two nations will finally be seized by him and his army. Our President, Tuntawone Soon has ordered our army to stand guard as Sukham brings in his army. It looks like we are not going down without a fight. Civilians on both sides of the boarder has already begun a violent demonstration. There are reports of fire and vandalism to the city.

The three adults watched nervously and attentively as the news boardcast continued. Thanatorn held on to Sayla's hands as she listened to the news, feeling a bit nervous.

Sayla - Oh my God... that's awful. Why can't they just spilt the land or share it?

Arrisa - Greed, P'Sayla...

Sayla - I'm scared.... I hope the war doesn't spread all over our nation.

Thanatorn - Don't worry, baby... I don't think it will. It looks like some kind of agreement will be made between the two presidents. I'm sure it will be okay. Don't worry... I'm here.

Sayla - I hope so, darling..

The rain outside have started to pour harder, not backing down one bit. Its mysery poured down on the land while the war struck south. Sayla rested her head on Thanatorn's chest as they continued tuning into the news, hoping that the presidents could work something out soon.

Part V

A few weeks later, Thanatorn and Arrisa seperated themselves away from Sayla for a bit, after realizing that she was starting to get suspicious. However, Thanatorn was getting nervous each day when the follow up appointment was coming up. How was he suppose to explain to her? How will she react when she hears that she needed a new heart or else? He felt so overwhelmed that he couldn't even sleep at night. He'd stay up and stare at her while she slept, not even waking her when Nani awakes for her midnight feedings. He'd been so consumed with Sayla's sickness and their baby that he doesn't even know what's happening in his world, much less his country and the ongoing battle between the two presidents. Thanatorn's mind and body felt so tired that he didn't feel himself drifting off into blankness, surrounding by sleep.

Sayla awoke, sat up, and looked around and realized that she was alone in the bedroom. Thanatorn was'nt next to her. She glanced over at the clock and it said, 6:35AM. She wiped the sleep from her eyes and rised from bed, wanting to check on the nursey to see if perhaps Thanatorn had fallen asleep there. She left the bedroom and immediately saw Thanatorn slouched on the couch fast asleep. She gave a warm smile, poor darling, you must be tired. She disappeared into the bedroom , and returned with a blanket to cover him. Arrisa must be sound asleep as well, she thought, since it's still very early. Great, this was an opportunity to be alone with Nani as she breatfeed her.

When she got to the nursery, Nani was awake squirming around in her crib. She smiled and picked up the baby.

Nani, my sweet angel, were you awake all this time sweetie? Did Daddy fall asleep on you? Hmm... it's okay, sweetie. Daddy's tired, he's been working so hard. Mommy's here now. You must be starving.

Sayla sat on the rocking chair and allowed the baby to latch on to her breast to feed her. She rocked them softly on the chair and started to sing a sweet melody in the dark lit room. The rain was still drizzling outside. After the feeding, Nani was fast asleep again. Hehe, sleepy head. Mommy loves you. Sayla kissed the baby and put her back in the crib.

----------

Thanatorn woke up in a jolt. He looked around and realized that he had fallen asleep in the living room. He threw the covers off of him and looked at his watch, 10:55AM. Oh shit! He exclaimed and quickly scrambled to his feet, wanting to check on Sayla and make sure that she wasn't doing any heavy duty work that she's been trying to do. Thanatorn quickly went to the bedroom, but didn't find her there. Then he realized that she must be in the nursery, so he quickly ran there. He swung the door open to find the rocking chair empty, and the room appeared to be empty. He then approached the crib to check on Nani, and she was sound asleep. Hello my sweet baby... Where's Mommy? HmmM? He whispered. Thanatorn turned around quietly not wanting to wake the baby. When he was about to exit the nursey, he caught a glimpse of something on the floor, on the other side of the crib.

He turned around and crept slowly to the crib, trying not to wake Nani. When he got there, he glanced over the crib to the otherside, and right away, his eyes widened.

SAYLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh No!!!!! He shouted and immediately went to Sayla and grabbed a hold of her. Sayla had collapsed and is unconcious. SAYLA!!!!! Thanatorn shook her, but no response. Nani then started crying from the loud voices of her father.

Sayla????!!!! Are you okay??? Sayla!!!!! Saylaaa!!!!! ARRISA!!! HELP!!!!! ARRISA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cries of Nani and Thanatorn's voice intertwined and echoed through the house, sending Arrisa running frantically into the nursery.

Thanatorn - Arrisa!!! Sayla is unconcious, call 911 NOW!!!!!!

Arrisa took a crying Nani and ran out of the nursery looking for a phone. She was so nervous that she went around in a circle, confused as to where the phone was while Nani cried and wailed in her arms. Shit, shit!!! She cried as she circled around for the phone, eventhough it was right there hung up by in the kitchen. Arrisa finally made it to the phone and dialed 911.

--------------

At the hospital, Thanatorn cradled Nani and paced back and fourth in the waiting room, and felt as though the darkness and demons were pulling him by the leg. Sayla has been in the operation room for about 30 minutes now, but it felt like an eternalty.

Arrisa wiped away her tears as she watched her brother paced around like a madman with a baby in his hand.

Arrisa - P'Torn, here let me take Nani.

Torn - No... I..I... want to hold her.

Arrisa - But, P'Torn... I think you should give Nani to me and sit down, you... you.. don't look so good.

There was a pause.

Arrisa - P'Torn?? Give me Nani.

Torn - I said NO, GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Arrisa was startledd and jumped.

Arrisa - I'm sorry.....

Thanatorn - I'm..I'm.... sorry....

Thanatorn couldn't find the words. He didn't know why he snapped at his sister when all she wanted was to help him. He cringged his eyes and shut them as tears rolled down his face. He hugged Nani closed to him and cried while still pacing around.

Arrisa looked down at the floor and started to weep. She understood her brother's frustrations, but she was so worried about him and about Nani. His eyes were so bloodshot from not sleeping and his body has been flinching from sleep deprivation, and yet, he won't sit down and rest. Arrisa sighed, stood up, and went over and took a hold of Nani softly out of his arms.

Arrisa - I'll take her, P'Torn...

Thanatorn let go on Nani and covered his face. He was a mess; he wanted to wake up from this nightmare, but how can he when this nightmare was a reality. He wanted to to shout at the top of his lungs, but that wouldn't help much. He wanted to reached inside his chest and pull out his heart for her, but he knew that was impossible. Thanatorn felt so defeated as he staggered to a chair and sat down. The clock on the wall was ticking as Arrisa and Thanatorn waited for word from the doctor; words they wanted to hear, but words they wished they'd never hear.

Part VI

As they continued the long wait, other patients and their families came dodging into the hospital's front entrance, drenched in rain. It was pouring out there, and it has been for weeks now. There was no telling when that misery was going to stop. Inside the waiting room, the TV that was mounted to the wall was on, and also pouring out its misery and messages of more bad news. The people surrounding Thanatorn, whom were also waiting on a love one were on edge as they listened to the news broadcast, while Thanatorn shut everything out, not wanting to hear any other sounds, but the ticking of the clock on the wall.

President Sukham Sone has turned down the peace bargain from president Tuntawone Soon! He called the offer a disgrace and a slap in the face, and has ordered the troops to go further north, rampaging through cities and wounding civilains! There has also been an airstrike. Reports of the dead are climbing up!

The people gasps as they heard the news. And their voices became rapid as they whispered amongsts eachother.

That Sukham Sone bastard! My sister lives down south! Someone oughta kill that son of a bitch!

This horrible...what if.....what if, the war spreads even further.. ?? And..and all the way here?

Just yesterday, President Tuntawone has issued out a recruitment. He needs strong and brave men who will defend and fight for their country.

But who's gonna to want to go and get their heads or limbs blown off??? It's dangerous out there!!!! Definitely not me! I don't want to die yet!

Well.. there are brave men out there who naturally want to defend their country.. and in the army, there are special units that does different operations. Not only will you be honored as a defender and protectator of your country, I hear that you can make good money too by joining the armed forces.

Psttt..... No amount of money will convince me to go to war!!

Cause you're a scared shit! haha

Shut up, I don't see you signing up either.

That's cause I'm a scared shit too.

Haha, that makes two of us then.

Eventhough their voice became a loud murmur, Thanatorn didn't pay much attention to them; the only thing running wildly in his mind was Sayla's condition. If only he could reach inside his chest and pull out his heart, he will, if it meant saving her, prolonging her years, so that Nani will have a Mother.

Arrisa bit her nails nervously as she continued listening to the news. Why is happening, she uttered as she cradled a sleeping Nani in her arms. Just when the news broadcast was about to show a clip of the battle ground, a doctor emerged from the ER. Thanatorn ran towards the doctor, Arrisa followed behind.

Thanatorn - How is she???

Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, your wife has suffered an acute heart attack. The good news is that she is in stable condition right now, however--

Thanatorn - Doctor!!??

Dr. Wimun - I'm afraid her condition will worsen if she doesn't get that a transplant right away. Right now, I've got Mrs. Thamadeth's hooked on to a machine that helps her heart pumps blood to her organs.

Thanatorn - Is she awake?

Dr. Wimun - Not yet. She's going to be unconcious for a while, Mr. Thamadeth.

Thanatorn felt a massive lump erupt in his throat. And he felt as if he had been punched in the stomach and the world around him was spinning out of control as he tried his best to stand straight. He could feel every vein in his body pulsating and his own bleeding heart pumping hot blood throughout his body.

Thanatorn - I've signed all the paperwork with Dr. Yeerman! She's suppose to be on that list! You guys are suppose to take care of this!

Dr. Wimun - I understand that Mr. Thamadeth. Trust me, we are working very hard at trying to find a donor for your wife, but you must know the extent of this operation. We need to find a matching before we can even perform the transplant on your wife.

Thanatorn - That's not good enough! I know that there are hundreds of being dying each day with a potential heart, and yet you haven't found a donor?? This is absurd!

Thanatorn's face was flushed with anger. The veins on his forehead nearly popped as he spoke with the doctor through clenched teeth, trying so hard not to punch the doctor in the face.

Arrisa - P'Torn... uhh..

Arrisa grabbed her brother's hand, trying to calm him down.

Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, like I said.. this is a very extensive procedure, and we have to have the right match in order to continue with the operation. I'm sure Dr. Yeerman has gone over this with you already.

Thanatorn - BULLSHIT!!!!!!! It seems to me like you're waiting on the $50,000!! And then you'll start on the operation right????

Arrisa - P' Thanatorn! Please...

Arrisa tried to calm her brother, knowing that he won't be able to control himself once he is angered and bothered.

Dr. Wimun - Sir, here at Khon Kaen hospital, we strive to care and save our patients. As soon as we get that donor heart, we will start on that operation immediately. Now sir, a nurse will take you to Mrs. Thamadeth, so you;ll have to excuse me. I've got to go.

Thanatorn - NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! you get back in there and work on my wife now! Are you just going to let her die, you son of a bitch?????? I will bring that $50,000 and throw it at your faces! Will that make you happy? Will that make you operate on her???!! Huh???

Arrisa - P'Thanatorn!! Please, don't!

All eyes were on Thanatorn now as he confronted the doctor.

Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, I have already explained to you the situation. This is a peaceful hospital, sir. If you are unable to settle down, then I'm sorry, but I will be forced to call security.

Arrisa - P'Torn, please!! you won't be able to see P'Sayla if you are thrown out! Please..let's talk about this after we see P'Say.

Thanatorn knew Arrisa was right. He can't afford to be thrown out, he needs to see her. He needs to hold her hand and kiss her. Thanatorn unclenched his fist as the doctor shook his head and walked away. He wiped hot tears away behind his eyes as Arrisa hugged him and laid her head on his shoulder.

Arrisa - P'Torn.. we have to be calm... for... for P'Sayla's sake--

Arrisa looked down at a sleeping Nani.

Arrisa - For Nani's sake.....

Thanatorn knew his sister was right and nodded blankly, wishing this was just a nightmare, eventhough he knew everything was very real.

*********

Nurse Teena took the siblings to the patient room. Inside, Sayla laid unconcious on the bed, hooked up to a milluon tubes and wires running to varies machines. Thanatorn felt cold and numb as he stepped towards his wife. Is this it? Will their love come to this? Will he lose her? All kinds of thoughts ran through his mind. Everything went into pause mode as he stood there and looked at her beautiful pale face. The sounds of beeps were also muted as he stared at her, and then words escaped from his lips weakly.

Thanatorn - Nurse....... is she in pain?

Nurse Teena - Rght now... no, she's not. She's asleep, so she shouldn't feel any pain.

Thanatorn - What about when she wakes up?

Nurse Teena - We have pain medicines that will help her, sir.

Thanatorn - Will she still remember me? Remember us......

Nurse Teena - Sir, ofcourse she will. She has a heart condition, not amnesia.

Thanatorn - How long will she be asleep?

Nurse Teena - The doctor expects her to wake by tomorow night.

Thanatorn - Then I will stay here with her.

Arrisa - P'Torn, I really think you need to go home and rest. I'll stay with her and baby Nani.

Thanatorn - No... please..... let me stay with her, Arrisa.

Arrisa sighed.

Arrisa - P'Torn--

Nurse Teena - Uhh...yes, sir... you're more than welcomed to stayy with her. We have a cot you can use to sleep here. In facr, all of you can stay, if you can be comfortable enough.

Thanatorn then remembered when their parents were admitted to to the hospital. They waited and waited and even stayed over night waiting to only hear bad news.

Thanatorn - Arrisa..... please do me a favor, take Nani home..

Arrisa nodded, not wanting to resist her brother's request.

Arrisa - Okay..... I'll take good care of Nani, P'Torn. You just try to get some rest okay?

Thanatorn nodded.

Arrisa went over and kissed Sayla on the forehead and whispered, please get better soon, P'Sayla.

Arrisa - Okay... goodnight, P'Torn. I'm going to go now okay? Call me if anything.. Goodnight, Nurse Teena. Thank you.

Teena - Goodnight sweetie.

Arrisa left the room.

Nurse Teena - Mr. Thamadeth, let me go get the cot for you okay? Be right back.

When the nurse left the room, the beeps echoed and bounced off the walls. Thanatorn stood there with his head down, and then he hestitantly lifted up his face and slowly turned to an unconcious Sayla. He was afraid to look at her, afraid to find the worst nightmare that he feared. When he finally brought himself to fully look at Sayla, heavy tears poured out of his eyes. He took a hold of her hand and staggered down on the seat next to her. Thanatorn brought her hand to his face and weeped onto it has he buried his face on the side of the bed.

Come back to me, Sayla... I need you... I will not let you leave me.. leave our baby.....

Thanatorn finally allowed those tears that he's been hiding to pour out of him. Her hand felt so good on his cheek as the warmth comforted him.

The nurse returned with the cot, but Thanatorn didn't noticed her presence, as he continued to weep. Nurse Teena shook her head sympathical and left the room quietly to give the man some privacy.

As Thanatorn held on to her hand and cried, all kinds of thoughts ran through his head, and it then occured to him that he will find a way to save her or else he will die trying. Thanatorn kissed her lips and then rested his head next to her as his body and soul gave way and drifted off into sleep.

Part VII

The next morning Thanatorn awoke to the voices of Arrisa and a nurse. He slept next to Sayla the whole night. For a minute there, he had to adjust his eyes to the bright hospital light, thiinking that he was at the beach, since he had been dreaming of running along the sand with his daughter and wife. Thanatorn thought the nightmare was over. Outside the rain was still pouring. When will it stop raining? That question has been on everyone's mind since it started.

As he rubbed his eyes to take a good look at where he was at, Arrisa shook his shoulders.

Arrisa - P'Torn! You should have slept in the cot. Ughh... you've been sleeping sitting up all night. Now you'll be tired still.

Thanatorn - Cot? What?

Thanatorn spoke in a haze, still hald asleep. His body felt stiff and was still tired from not fully resting. Just then, the nurse injected something into Sayla's IV. She was still unconcious. Thanatorn had fully awaken and was disappointed to see that the beach was all a dream. Instead, IVs, needles, tubes, medicines, and machines were very real. His eyes widened as he glanced at Sayla, still unconcious. Just when the nurse was about to leave the room, Thanatorn stood up from his seat and grabbed the nurse's arm.

Thanatorn - Nurse??? You guys told me that she'll be awake the next day?? Well... it's already here, so why isn't she awake?? What's going on, Nurse??

Nurse Betty - Sir, the doctor checked your wife earlier this morning--

Thanatorn - And what??? Why didn't you wake me up??

Nurse Betty - Mr. Thamadeth, we tried to, but you were in a deep sleep.

Thanatorn felt anger arrise in him again as he raised his voice.

Thanatorn - Fine!! But why is Sayla still asleep??? He told me she'll be awake by now? But she's not!!! What's going on, Goddamn it??

Arrisa - P'Thantorn... calm down, you're scaring Nani, please.

Thanatorn - Arrisa!! I will not calm down! These people are not doing their jobs.

Arrisa - I think they are trying their best, P'Torn!

Nurse Betty - Sir.. Dr. Wimun mentioned that there are some complications. Mrs. Thamadeth is not getting enough blood pumped through her body. He will need to take her into surgery and get another machine going. Her operation will begin shortly, sir.

Thanatorn - What?????????? I don't believe this!!!!!!!!!

Thanatorn glanced back at his wife. His bloodshot eyes winced and tears formed in them. He staggered back, feeling the floor underneath him move. This is too much, he couldn't take this anymore. He held his arm up to his head and tried to think of what to do, he started panting. Nurse Betty touched his arm, trying to calm him down. Thanatorn hasn't eaten or drank anything for the since yesterday, and having restless sleep didn't help him neither.

Nurse Betty - Sir?? Are you okay?? Why don't you sit down? I'll go get some water for you.

Arrisa - P'Torn??

Instead of listening to the nurse, Thantorn broke his arm free from her and dodged towards the door. He had to get out of there, just for a moment. He had to think, but of what?? What can he do to save his wife? If he had the $50,000, he felt like that's when the doctor will really do their jobs.

Arrisa - P'Torn!!! Where are you going??? P'Torn!!!! Wait!!!

It was no use. Thanatorn already left. Arrisa held Nani close to her chest and sighed. She couldn't help but cry. The last time her brother cried was when the doctors told them their parents died.

**********

He had to get out there, but where to? Thanatorn ran out of the hospital into the pouring rain. He looked at his car, but only decided to walk pass it. The cold drops of rain seeped through his clothes, making him shiver. He was drenched and people were staring at him as he cursed under his breath. He didn't care if they looked at him and thought he was crazy, because he did feel crazy. Crazy about his wife's life; about his daughter, about his family. He had to think, had to get away from the misery in that hospital room.

Why is this happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE ME AN ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanatorn shouted as he walked out of the hospital's parking lot and onto the sidewalk of a bridge. The rain was beating down on his face as he looked up to the grey skies. The rip currents and tide was so high as the rain poured into the shore.

What if I killed myself and gave her my heart? He questioned. What if I were to jump right now? Will my heart save her? But Thanatorn knew that was a foolish thing to do.. besides, by the time they find his body, his heart will be no good. And what about the matching? How would he know for sure that his heart will fit into hers. All these thoughts ran through his mind, vigurously like a flood. He hugged himself and kept walking as a lightning struck in the distance.

The cars that passed by honked at him, wondering what that crazy guy is doing, walking along the bridge on such a dangerous day to be outside. A passerby rolled down the window and shouted out to him.

Passerby - Sir?? Do you need help?

Thanatorn - Yes, I do.

Passerby - Okay.. do you need us to call someone for you? Do you need a ride??

Thanatorn - Do you have a heart?

Passerby - Huh???

Thanatorn - Do you happen to have an extra heart for my wife?

Passerby - What are you talking about??!

Thanatorn - She.. she needs a heart.

Passerby - Are you crazy??? No wonder!

The passerby then quickly rolled up the window thinking that he was a crazy homeless guy. Thanatorn shivered as the rain beat down on him. He kept walking until he finally came to the end of the bridge. The rain wasn't backing down, because it seemed to have gotten heavier. Thanatorn kept on walking, feeling so helpless and defeated; the tears that he tried to h old back also came pouring down like the rain from the sky. Good thing that no one could see him cry, because the rain only washed it away. When Thanatorn reached downtown Khon Kaen, he then realized that he should go back to the hospital. Maybe Sayla awoke? Maybe somehow, they found her a heart?? Thanatorn turned around to walk back to the hospital, but before he fully turned around, a huge poster on a door along the strip caught his eye.

President Tuntawone needs you!!! Do you have what it takes? Defend your country and make big money for your family! Could it be you?? Come inside.

Instead of heading to the hospital, Thanatorn decided to go into that office that has the poster on their door. Thanatorn wiped the wetness away from his face and slicked back his hair. He opened the glass door and walked inside. The room was empty; no one seemed to want to take on this challenge. A man wearing a soldier uniform looked up from his desk and greeted Thanatorn.

Recruiting soldier - Goodmorning sir. Are you here for the position?

Without hesitation, Thanatorn nodded. The soldier handed Thanatorn a a clipboard with paper on it.

Recruiter - Here, Fill this out and take a seat. You'll be called shortly.

Thanatorn - Thanks.

Thanatorn took a seat and looked around him. There were photos of war and soldiers along the wall. He had an idea what he was getting himself into, but the answer that he wanted was-- just how much money are they offering? He started to fill out the paperwork, not caring that the paper was starting to get wet from his wet hands. He ignored his shaking hand as he filled out his name and personal information. Inside his heart, he hoped and prayed that he was doing the right thing, following what he had vowed earlier--he will find a way or he will die trying.

Part 8 coming up.

Part VIII

While Sayla was still in surgery, Arrisa was glad that baby Nani fell asleep. So that meant she could rest her head just for a bit. Arrisa has been Nani's sarrogate mother, and she doesn't mind at all. She loves her niece, it's the least she c ould do for her brother and sister-in-law whom she loves dearly.

Arrisa looked around the quiet hospital room and sighed, feeling overwhelmed and tired, wondering where in the world Thanatorn went. For the love of God, at least make the rain go away, she thought sadly. Perhaps the sunshine can bring a drop of happiness, but even that was too much to ask for. She rested her head on the round table, wanting to close her eyes just for a minute. Arrisa didn't realize just how tired she was, because the minute she put her head down, she fell asleep right away.

Everything became hazy. Arrisa was standing in the middle of a field of grass and wild flowers. The wind was blowing at her hair while she looked on to see where she was. It seems like she was the only human left, but then the cooing of a baby surprised her. She looked down, and there she was Nani, cradled in her arms, giving her the sweetest smile.

Hey there, little princess? Where's Mommy and daddy? Arrisa held Nani up to her face and gave her a kiss. Suddenly, the wind started to pick up and Arrisa could hear loud panting coming from the sky. She twirl around, trying to figure out what it was--and then, she woke in a jolt to find Thanatorn sitting next to her, panting, drenched in wetness.

Arrisa - P'Torn??? What happened? You're..you're all wet, and are you okay?

Thanatorn spoke calmly this time.

Thanatorn - I'm okay, Arrisa. I was just.. running.

Arrisa - In the rain?

Thanatorn - Yes... I needed to think, so I took a walk. And then... I ran.

Arrisa - P'Torn, you should go home.. and change. You're all wet. You might get sick... I wouldn't want you to be sick, P'Torn.

Thanatorn - Okay, I will. But, Arrisa... I need to ask you a favor first.

Arrisa - P'Torn? Anything! Please, I'm here for you guys.. I ... I love you guys so much.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, I know I've been such a jerk to you lately.. but I've been so worr--

Arrisa - Please.. don't worry about it. I understand that you've been so worried about P'Say.

Thanatorn - Still.. I am very sorry if I yelled out you for no reason these couple of days. You've been such a big help. I just want to thank you.. nong Arrisa.

Tears formed in Arrisa's eyes as she squeezed his hand.

Arrisa - It's the least I could do, P'Torn. You've been like a father to me.. after.. after our--

Arrisa lowered her voice and squinted her eyes.

Arrisa - After our parents died. So I will do anything for you and P'Sayla and Nani.

Thanatorn ran fingers through his hair, slicking back his wet hair. His bloodshot eyes were so red with sorrow and pain that it made Arrisa swallow down that lump in her throat.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, I want you to look after Nani and Saylanee. I will be away for a day or two, to take care of business. I'll be back when i'm done.

Arrisa - P'Torn? But... where are you going? And.. and what if.. P'Sayla wakes up? What if--

Thanatorn - I need you to take my place for a few days. I'll be back, I promise.

Arrisa - What are you going to go do, P'Torn? Are you leaving town? What kind of business? Is it about the $50,000??

Thanatorn - No.. I'm not going far, I just need to go verify some things.

Arrisa - But where? And what is it that you need verifying??

Thanatorn - I-I can't tell you right now, but I promise I'll be back.

Arrisa loweed her head and looked down at the floor, not wanting him to see her tears, to see how scared and weak she felt. She was asked to take on his roles; a big and dificult role too.

Thanatorn - Don't be afraid, Arrisa. You will do fine. I know you will..

Arrisa wiped away her tears and tried to be brave and strong for her bother.

Arrisa - So when are you going then?

Thanatorn - Right now.

Arrisa - Huh?? Right now? But..but.. P'Sayla is still in surgery. What if she wants to see you when she wakes up?? P'Torn, why now?? Please, you can't go yet.

Thanatorn - It kills me, but I have to go Arrisa. The sooner I do this.. the sooner it will be over.

Arrisa - P'Torn, what over? What are you talking about??

Thanatorn stood up from his seat, went to kiss a sleeping Nani on the forehead. I love you, daddy's little girl, He uttered softly.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, please let Sayla know that I'll be back.. that I have to go do something important okay?

Arrisa - But. but...

Before Arrisa could finish her sentence, Thanatorn interrupted her by giving her a big hug. Arrisa could feel the wetness transferring to her, but she didn't care, she just buried her face into her brother's chest.

Arrisa - I love you, and P'Say.. and Nani. And I trust you.

Thanatorn - I love you too, Nong Arrisa. Thank you for everything.

Thanatorn let go of Arrisa and disappeared out the door. Arrisa took a deep sigh. She doesn't know where he's going, but she believed in her heart that whatever he's about to do, that it's the right thing.

Arrisa fell back into the chair and covered her face. What a nightmare, she thought all of their fears and sorrow will be gone when they finally got over their parents' death, but she feared that it's happening all over again. Just then, Nurse Betty appeared into the room.

Nurse Betty - Mr. Thamadeth?

Arrisa - Oh..uhh... that's my brother, he's he's not here right now. I'm Arrisa Thamadeth, his sister.

Nurse Betty - Oh.. I just came to tell you that Mrs. Thamadeth is out of surgery. Everything looks good right now. Dr. Wimun was able to put in a second machine. She is in ICU and she is stable.

Arrisa - Oh, thank God. Thank you nurse. When can I see her?

Nurse Betty - We'll bring her back in here shortly. Miss Thamadeth.

Nani then started to cry and immdediately Arrisa ran to her carriage.

Arrisa - Oo.. excuse me, Nurse. I gotta get my niece.

Nurse Betty - I'll see you in a bit Miss.

Arrisa - Okay Nurse, thank you.

Arrisa ppicked Nani up from her carriage and patted her back and shushing her softly. For the past couple of days that Sayla's been in the hospital, Nani has refused to drink baby formula, since she is so used to drinking her Sayla's breast milk.

Ohh.. my sweet princess. Won't you drink this milk for Auntie today? Your mommy's still sick, sweetie. Drink this okay sweet princess?

Arrisa held the bottle to Nani's mouth and tried to have her take the nipple on the bottle, but Nani made a face, only wanting her Mother's milk.

Ohh... please.. you're going to be hungry, sweet angel. Please just take this for Auntie. Be a good girl, please...

Then finally Nami took the bottle and drank ot slowly. She had no choice, but to drink it eventhough it wasn't Mother's milk.

Oh, thank you sweetie. That's my girl. Arrisa was finally relieved that she was able to have Nani drink regular formula.

An hour later, Nani fell asleep again. That's also when Sayla was brought back from ICU. Arrisa gasps when she saw her sister-in-law, this time there were more tubes and machines. Her lips were very chapped and her skin was more pale than ever.

Arrisa - Nurse Betty? When will P'Sayla wake up? Did the doctor say?

Nurse Betty - Mrs. Thamadeth should be regaining conciousness in about an hour. Right now, she's still sedated. She'll be very weal when she wakes.

Arrisa - Oh.. did Dr. Wimun mentioned exactly how long P'Say will need to stay here in the hospital?

Nurse Betty - Dr. Wimun will be in here in an hour. He'll explain everything for you okay?

Arrisa - Okay, Nurse. Tank you.

Nurse Betty - You're more than welcomed. Is there anything I can bring you?

Arrisa - Oh.. no thank you, Nurse Betty. I'm alright for now.

Nurse Betty - Okay.. if there's anything, just press this button okay?

Arrisa - Yes Nurse, thank you very much.

The nurse smiled at her warmly and left the room. Arrisa went over to Sayla and touched her hand. It was bruised and cold as ice. There was a piece of hair over Sayla's face, so Arrisa wiped it away.

P'Sayla, please be okay... Nani and P'Torn needs you... I need you... you're like a mother to me. Arrisa said through shakey voice. But don't worry okay? I will take good care of them both while you're recovering.

In a way, Arrisa was also reassuring herself. She sat down next to the bed and looked out the window. The rain was still falling, berating against the window pane.

Dear God, please let the sun shine through, Arrisa whispered.

********

Thanatorn glanced at himself in the rearview mirror as he drove to his destination. Thinking of what just happened. Eventhough a long time ago after highschool, he did join the armed forces, but after getting married to Sayla, she begged him to leave it behind and start a family with her. And now, he was surprised that they accepted him back, even after reading his records of resigning. But who would resist a person who is so willing to do whatever it takes, just as long as they show him the money?

He realized that there are probably a millon ways out of this nightmarish hell, but this seems like the easier way. After all, they did promise him over $50,000.00. And on top of that, he had other hidden agendas. He looked into his cold and red eyes in the mirror; perhaps killing the rival President Sukham shouldn't be too hard.

He stepped on the gas pedal and zoomed down the street, heading to the place where they will do him that favor that he had asked earlier.

Part IX

Later that evening, Arrisa stayed at the hospital with Sayla and her niece. Though her body was present, her mind had wondered off. She wished that Thanatorn had given her more details as to where he went. It's not like him to just pick up and leave, especially during times like these. What could be more important than your sick wife and baby girl? Arrisa shook the thoughts out of her mind, telling herself that her big brother has got good reasons to go. She sighed deeply and glanced at Sayla who is still unconcious and then glanced at the baby who was sound asleep.

Why is this happening to us, she whispered. Mom... Dad.. please watch over us.. Please God, no more suffering.. please...

When Arrisa opened her eyes, she soon realized that the rain that was beating on the window had disappeared. And there was a glimpse of sunlight trying to seep through the window. Arrisa's eyes widened as she rised from her seat and walked towards the window.

Has stopped raining?? She thought.

When she reached the window, she drew the blinds opened and lifted her head towards the sky. To her surprised, the clouds dispersed and the sun was making its way through the clouds, as if it was chasing the greyness away. Arrisa couldn't believe her eyes. It has been raining everyday since the birth of her niece, that she thought today would never come; the day that the rain went away. She raised both of her arms up in the air and did a little cheer.

Yes!! You stupid rainstorm. The sun is stronger than you! You can take your wet and miserable self out of here!

Suddenly, a voice from behind interrupted; the voice was coarse and weak. Arrisa couldn't recognized the voice at first.

Sayla - Arrisa.... who are you cheering on, sweetie?

Arrisa turned around and her eyes widened to see Sayla has awaken and is sitting half way up on the bed.

Arrisa - P'Sayla!!!!!! I was just admiring the sun.

Arrisa ran to Sayla's side and gave her a gentle, but big hug.

Sayla - So it stopped raining.

Arrisa - Oh, I'm so happy that you're okay! And now you're up. How are you feeling? Are you comfortable?? Do you need a nurse??

Sayla - Sweetie.. slow down. I'm fine. I'm a little sore, but I feel okay for now.

Arrisa - Let me call a nurse or a doctor! Be right bac--

Sayla - Arrisa, wait..don't call any of them yet. I want to spend a little time with my family first. Those people take away too much of my time away from you guys.

Sayla glanced over to Nani and gave a warm smile.

Sayla - Looks like my sweet angel is too sleepy to see her Mommy huh.

Arrisa - Yeah.. I'm amazed at how much she sleeps. She's quite easy to take care of, P'Sayla. She's an angel.

Sayla - Before you know it, you're going to be running after her, trying to catch up with her.

Arrisa - Yeah... by then I'll be ready.

Sayla slowly pulled herself up, wanting to sit up taller and straighter. Immediately Arrisa took a hold of her and grabbed a pillow and placed it in the back of Sayla for support.

Sayla - Thank you, sweetie. It feels so good to sit up, after laying down for so long.

Arrisa - I hope you're not over doing it, P'Say. I think we should notify a nurse that you're up.

Sayla - We will, but right now.. let me have a moment's peace.

Arrisa - Are you sure...?

Sayla - Yes, besides being with you guys is the best medicine.

While saying that, Sayla glaned around the room and then eyed the bathroom, but realized that the door was opened, so no one was in there. Arrisa smiled nervously. Arrisa then tried to distract her, because she knew why Sayla was glancing all around.

Arrisa - Err.... So.. P'Say, when you get out of here, can you teach me to sew?

Sayla smiled and nodded, but her eyes darted from one corner to the other, searching for Thanatorn.

Arrrisa - Or..or.. you could teach me how to make Pad Thai.

Sayla - I'll teach you whatever you want, sweetie. But for now.. Where's--

Arrisa - Ohh..Or maybe we could take a trip to the beach with Nani? We haven't gone to the beach for so long.

Sayla - Hmm... that sounds nice, sweetie... But where's--

Arrisa - Are you thirsty? How about I go get you a drink??

Sayla - No, I'm good for now, thanks. Arrisa, where's--

Arrisa - Well, err..I'm thirsty.. uhhh.. be right back.

Arrisa turned around and headed towards the door, biting her lips, and trying to avoid the question about Thanatorn's whereabouts.

Sayla - Arrisa.... hold it right there.

Arrisa bit her lip harder and squinted her eyes. She didn't know what to tell Sayla, because she herself didn't know either.

Sayla - Arrisa... sweetie? Where's P'Torn? Is he downstairs?

Arrisa closed her eyes and tried to think of an excuse. When she thought of when, that's when she turned around to face Sayla.

Arrisa - Errr..... P'Say...

Arrisa smiled crookedly and nervously.

Sayla - Well??

Arrisa - He.. he..

Sayla - Arrisa?? He what??

Arrisa - Err.. He.. had to run an errand!

Sayla - Oh..

Arrisa - Yeah.. he should be back in--

Arrisa then coughed loudly and continued her sentence trying to hide the rest of her words, a couple of days...

Sayla - When will he be back?

Arrisa coughed again... in a couple of days.

Sayla - Arrisa... are you trying to hide something?

Arrisa - No!! I mean... no.. Errr.. P'Torn went to run some errands for his job.

Sayla - Oh..

Sayla lowered her head and sounded disappointed, knowing that Thanatorn was a bit of a workaholic before the baby was born. But since the baby was born, he went on pathernity leave and now that she got sick, his job gave him more time off.

Sayla - He decided to go back to worl already?

Arrisa - Oh!! No...no..no! Uhh.. he didn't go back to work, uhh.. he just had to run some errands for them. He'll be back hopefully by tomorrow. The latest is two days!

Arrisa wanted to kick herself, feeling that she has said too much already.

Sayla - Oh... I see......

Before Arrisa could come up with other excuses, Nani gave out a loud wail. Sayla's attention turned to her baby and her eyes lit up with excitement. Arrisa went over the baby and picked her up and handed her over to Sayla. She felt a bit of relief that Nani has awaken. Now Sayla's attention will be on her, and not Thanatorn and his whereabouts.

Sayla smiled and kissed Nani softly. All the love and maternity instincts were all over her face as she held Nani in front of her and admired and comforted her. The baby cooed and smiled as her Mother held her and spoke to her.

Mommy's here, my sweet angel.. Sorry I wasn't with you for a few days. But I'm here now.. have you been a good little girl? HMmmm? Did you give daddy and Aunt Arrisa an easy time?

Arrisa - P'Say.. I'll be right back okay? I'm going to get a drink, and I'll get a nurse on my way back.

Sayla nodded, but kept her attention onthe baby girl, okay Arrisa. Thank you.

Arrisa took a sigh of relief and disappeared out of the room.

**************

Thanatorn was surprised that it stopped raining as he drove down the street. He glanced at the sky and was happy to see the sun. The happiness was then cut short, because his mind went back to Sayla again. His memory went back 5 years ago when he proposed to her. He thought of the vows that he promised.

I'll be your protector, Sayla. I won't let anything or anyone hurt you.

As Thanatorn thought of his past with Sayla, his heart felt pain, knowing that she may die. How can he live without her? After all, the air he breathed is Sayla... the morning he wakes up to is Sayla.. everything that he's done, he did it for Sayla. He squinted his eyes, trying hard to make the pain go away, all the while thinking that he can't live without her. And that's the reason why he's driving down the street right now--going to a place where he thinks will save her.

As Thanatorn drove down the road, the sun began to set and the darkness crept in slowly. Up ahead, he noticed there were lights flashing. It looks like emergency lights from a car. He didn't think much of it, so he kept on driving, thinking of Sayla and the baby. When he finally approached, the light, it was indeed lights of a car. There was a man at the hood of the car who looked like he was trying to get the car started. Thanatorn decided to mind his own business and drive past the stalled car, but when saw a glimpse of a woman and a small child sitting inside the stalled car on his side mirror, he knew he should stop.

Thanatorn pulled over, about 200 feet ahead of the stalled car. When he stepped out the car, the mad at the hood of that car waved to him.

Do you need some help? Thanatorn called out.

Part 10

The empty and lonely street was still wet from the rain. In the distance, the sea roared with waves as the tide got higher from all the moisture in the air. The smell of rain was still visible as the earth around Thanatorn tried to recover from all the down pour. Eventhough it stopped raining, Thanatorn wasn't able to fully enjoy the sunshine, since the night quickly rolled in. But it didn't really matter to him though, because no matter where or how the conditions are, if Sayla isn't healed, then he might as well allow the darkness to consume him alive.

A man in his late twenties looked up from the hood of the car and quickly answered Thanatorn. Darkness engulfed their surroundings, so it was hard to see the man's face, but Thanatorn got a confirmation that the man, indeed needed his help.

Anouwat - Yes! Please! I've been out here for over and hour now. No one seemed to want to help us.

Thanatorn - Okay. Gimme a minute, let me grab some tools from my trunk.

Anouwat - Thank you.

And then from the stalled car, his wife called out to him.

Anneetha - Hun? Is everyday okay?

Anouwat - Yes, baby. Hopefully he'll be able to help us... if I hadn't forgot my cell phone, we would have been home by now. I'm so forgetful these days.

Anneetha - It's okay, hun. We've got help now.

Theela - Daddy! Can I get out of the car now?

Anouwat - No, sweetie. You stay right there with Mommy. It's dangerous out here.

Theela - But... but.. I'm getting tired of sitting here!

Anneetha - Listen to your daddy, sweetie. Soon, we'll be home okay?

Theela made a sad face and started to twiddle her thumbs and started to whine.

Theela - But I'm hungry and I want my Nanny KeoJai!

Anneetha - Nanny's at home, sweetie. Be a good girl okay? Daddy's going to fix the car.

Theela - Alwight.

The little girl then buried her face into her mother's chest and continued to wait patiently again. Thanatorn walked over the Anouwat with a tool box in hand. Anouwat extended out his habd to shake Thanatorn's.

Anouwat - Thanks again for stopping. If you hadn't stopped, we'd be stranded all night. And these roads are pretty empty, so I didn't think help would arrive soon.

Thanatorn - Oh, no problem. I'm glad I stopped. So what's wrong with the car?

Anouwat - I think I've just got a loose wire that connects to the battery. I've been trying to reattached it, but everytime I go to start the engine, the ignition would come on, but after a few minutes, the lights go off again. And I've been doing the same thing over and over now. I think it just needs some tightening with a plyer. And a flashlight would help too. Since, I've been working in the dark, I'm probably not attaching it right.

Thanatorn - Okay, I see. I've got all the tools we need here, and a flashlight.

Thanatorn opened his tool box, pulled out a small flashlight, and shine the spotlight on the battery box.

Thanatorn - Yes, it appears so. The wires just need some tightening. Here, let me do it for you.

Anouwat - Thank you so much. Oh by, the way, My name's Anouwat.

Anouwat then pointed to his wife and daughter.

Anouwat - And that's my wife, Anneetha and my daughter, Theela.

Anneetha smiled at Thanatorn and thanked him for stopping to help them, while Theela stuck a finger in her mouth, feeling a shy around the stranger. Thanatorn smiled at the mother daughter and waved at the little girl.

Thanatorn went ahead and got started on the car, while Anouwat stood by and held the flashlight. While the men fixed the car, they continued talking.

Thanatorn - How old is your daughter?

Anouwat - She just turned 6. We had her birthday party at my father's house in Bangkok today and that's how we ended up here. But I don't live too far from here though. The farm is about 5 miles from here, so I may have no choice, but to walk there, so it might have not been too bad.

Thanatorn - Oh.. that would still be quite a long walk. Anyway... I've got a daughter. My wife just gave birth.

Anouwat - Really?! Oh wow, congratulations.

Thanatorn smiled.

Thanatorn - Thanks.

Anouwat - So what are doing out here? Were you on the way to see your wife and baby?

Suddenly, Thanatorn could feel a lump in his throat and his stomach flip flopped. What was he doing out here? He thought as well. Why isn't he with his wife.. and his daughter. Why isn't he celebrating, like he sjould be? Thanatorn paused for awhile and lowered his head and continued to quickly fix the car. Anouwat then sense that something was wrong when Thanatorn didn't answer him.

Anouwat - Oh... I'm sorry. Is there something wrong?

Thanatorn - Uhmm... No. Everything's fine. I-I-I just had to take care of something. That's why i'm not there with her now.

Anouwat - I see.

Anouwat then changed the subject. He started talking about the conflict down south.

Anouwat - Our troops are doing a great job. So far, the fataliy numbers dropped since the initial attack from Sukham and his men.

And again, Thanatorn felt pain in his heart when he was reminded of war. He had just enlisted himself and was getting ready to deport to the boarder. He stayed quiet and just nodded as he tried to finish re-wiring the wires. And then Anouwat realized that Thanatorn seemed really upset about something, but was trying his hardest to hide it. So he decided to shut his mouth as Thanatorn worked on the car.

Thanatorn - There.. I think this should do it. Could start the ignition for me?

Anouwat - Okay.

Anouwat started the car and revved the engine. He waited several minutes to see if the lights would go out again, but this time it stayed on. Anouwat shook Thanatorn's hand and thanked him one last time. And Anneetha called out to Thanatorn and thanked him as well.

Anouwat - Thank you, so much. It looks like everything's all set.

Thanatorn - No problem. You folks have a good night okay?

Anouwat - You too... take care.

Just when Thanatorn walked half to his car, Anouwat called out.

Anouwat - Hey wait! Thanatorn... come join us for dinner!

Thanatorn - Ohh... no thanks, I've got to go.

Thanatorn was going to a neighboring town to check into a motel, so that he can wake early in the morning to go to the military hospital and conduct a favor he had asked from the armed forces.

Anouwat - Oh, come on! It's the least I can do for you. My place is just up the road.

Thanatorn - I'm okay.. I'm really not hungry.

Anouwat - Okay fine, but just come join us anyway. Please?

Thanatorn then thought about it for a moment, and realized that his stomach was growling eventhough he said he wasn't hungry.

Thanatorn - Uhmm...okay... if it's okay with your wife too.

Anneetha - Yes, come join us!

Thanatorn nodded reluctantly, knowing that food does sound good right now.

Anouwat - Okay, just follow my lead.

The two men each got into their cars and Anouwat led the way to his ranch.

When they drove about 5 miles down the road and passed a huge sign which led into the ranch, even in the dark, Thanatorn could still see the lush landscaping with an abundance of flowers, fruit trees, and a beautiful lake glimmering in the moonlight. Since the earth was still wet, everything, including the grass was glistening in the illumination of the full moon. Thanatorn suddenly thought of Sayla and wished she was here to see such a beautiful sight since she loves nature. He then realized that the people he just helped must have been some rich folks.

They came into a parking in front of a huge white ranch house. Once the vehicles got into a park, a middle aged woman came running out of the house and immediately grabbed the little girl and hugged her and kissed her.

Nanny Keojai - Oh.. I was so worried!!! I was expected you guys since 3 hours ago!! What happened, Khun Noo?

Anneetha - Sorry, Nanny. On the way here, the rain was pouring really hard before it stopped. And then we had car troubles.

Anouwat - But luckily, Thanatorn came to our rescue.

Anouwat gestured towards Thanatorn.

Nanny - Oh, thank you so much, Khun Torn.

Thanatorn - No problem, it was my pleasure.

Anouwat went to the back of his trunk and pulled out a wheelchair. Thanatorn stood there wondering why he was taking out a wheelchair, and then he realized that the man's wife needed it. He stood back as Anouwat carried his wife out of the car and sat her in the wheelchair. Then Thanatorn felt a bit bad, knowing that he wasn't going to stop to help. Had he did, Anouwat may have to walk here to the ranch, while Anneetha waited in the car, since her wheelchair might not roll on the mud along the street. He was very glad he did stop to help afterall.

Anneetha - Thanks hun.

Anneetha smiled at her husband and then at Thanatorn, gesturing for everyone to go in the house as Anouwat pushed her.

Theela - Nanny.. I'm hungry.

Theela whined.

Anouwat - Okay, Nanny go fix you something and Khun Noo go to bed okay?

Theela - Uh huh.

Thanatorn couldn't help, but smile as he witness this little family. It kind of reminded him of his family; Sayla, Nani, and Arrisa. His heartached that he wasn't there with them right now.

************

After dinner, everyone went off to get ready for bed, but Anouwat stayed to chat with Thanatorn. somehow, Thanatorn felt comfortable chatting with his new friend. It felt as though the man he helped was like an older brother, like he knew a lot and is very wise.

Anouwat - Thanks again for everything.

Thanatorn - No problem.. thank you for having me over. You've got a beautiful home, and on a beautifiul ranch too.

Anouwat - Thanks.. 6 years ago, I lived in Bangkok. I didn't care much about this farm--it was my fathers. But since I met my wife, and she loves to be within nature, when our daughter was born, I decided to move us down here permenantly. She deserves it, considering everything that we've been through.

Anouwat sighed and then turned his attention back to Thanatorn.

Thanatorn - I see. I'd love to have my wife live like this someday. But as for me.. I'm just a struggling salesman. My wife--she's..

Thanatorn squinted his eyes, not wanting to think of about Sayla's condition. He then changed the subject.

Thanatorn - Uhh... I think I should be heading out. It's getting late.

Anouwat - Wait... Thanatorn.. I don't mean to pry, but... is there something I can help you with? I mean, I see there is something bothering you. And if I could help... please, let me. It's the least I could do for you.

Thanatorn paused for a minute, wondering if he should just tell this stranger his problems. Maybe it's easier to tell a stranger? So he won't ever see this person again? So he won't ever have to face this person again and try to hide all the pain he felt? He swallowed the lump in his throat and decided to tell his new friend everything.

After he spilled his heart out, Anouwat nodded attentively and warmly. He knew the pain that Thanatorn was going through, because he too felt that kind of pain in the past. And then he knew that he had to help this young man. It's the least he could do.

Anouwat - Thanatorn... please... let me pay for the medical bill.

Thanatorn's gasps and his eyes widened. Why is this man going to dish out $50,000 to a stranger??

Thanatorn - No! I can't.. I-I-I can't accept it.

Anouwat - Please, accept it. It's my thank you.

Thanatorn - But-but..

Thanatorn was stuttering, stunned that this man was going this far to help him.

Anouwat - Thanatorn, listen to me... I just met you today, but I know all the struggles that you are going through... trust me... Anneetha and I struggled too, but I'm sure your struggles are deeper. Please... don't go into battle just for $50,000. You're risking your life. You should go because your heart is in it and because your country depend on it.

Thanatorn - But I had no choice. I didn't have that kind of money...

Anouwat - Well now you do, because you will accept this money.

Anouwat pulled out a checkbook and pen from a near by drawer.

Thanatorn swallowed the lump and watched Anouwat write the check. After he wrote the check, Anouwat grabbed Thanatorn's hand and put the check into it.

Anouwat - I left the name blank, so you can write in the hospital's name. Thank you again for helping us tonight. Please take this check. And please, turn your car around and go back to your wife. You need to be with her and your daughter. Please don't allow anything to come between you two.

Thanatorn was speechless. He nodded and shoved the check into his pocket. After the two men said their goodbyes, Thanatorn got into his car and drove back to the hospital. He had to take a moment to comprehend what just happened.

After watching Anouwat and his beautiful family, he couldn't belive that he allowed desperation to cloud his mind. As he drove down the road, he felt like such an idiot. How could he leave her and their daughter? And then Thanatorn stared into the rear view mirror, and was relieved that he ran into Anouwat. Had it not been for Anouwat, he would be at that motel right now, awaiting the tests that he had request from the armed forces. He wanted to find out if his heart would match Sayla's. He thought that he'd kill two birds with one stone by recieving money and purposely dying in combat, so they can return his heart to Sayla. But now that he thought about it, the idea was absurd. He wanted to live, so he could hold his wife.. he wanted to live, so he could watch his daughter grow. Thanatorn shook his head in disbelief that he was actually going to go through with his plan.

And then as he drove along, he then knew that it wasn't over. He had already agreed to go to war, and that they will be coming for him. But nevertheless, he was happy. He thought about giving the money to the hospital, so they can quickly find her a heart. And that he will go to war to serve his country and come out alive to be with Sayla and her new heart.

Everything will be fine, he thought and kept driving, suddenly aching to see them again.

Part 11

For the last few miles back to the hospital, Thanatorn sped down the road. He ached to hold his daughter and kiss his wife. Every mile and every second seemed like eternalty as he tried his best to reach them. The thoughts of her smile, her soft skin, her warm embraces, her beauty, and her kindness made him smile to himself. And his daughter, she's so fragile, so pure, and innocent. He longed to smell his newborn and cradle her tightly in his arms. But then all the reminder of what matters was interupted by the did that was done. He shook his head, trying to shake away the bad thoughts. How would he ever explain this to the women that he loves? How would he explain what an idiot he was for enlisting himself to go to war? Thanatorn tried to remind himself that everything was fine. That the war will be over soon. He'll go there, do what he's got to do, and then come home to them. It's that simple right?

Then up ahead, the hospital came into view. He breathe a sigh of relief and sped into the parking lot. Thanatorn swung the door open and dodged out a second after the car came into full park. He couldn't afford to waste anymore time that he has already wasted. He ran into the hospital's front entrance and disappeared into an elevator. He pushed the buttons repeatedly, feeling more, and more anxious. Finally, when he arrived at the right floor, he dodged out of the elevator, and ran towards Sayla's room.

Arrisa was sitting next to Sayla's bed, while Sayla was holding Nani. Thanatorn entered the room, panting, and trying to catch a breath. The ladies were startled, but both their eyes widened when they saw Thanatorn standing before them.

Thanatorn.. Sayla uttered under her breath, happy to see her husband.

And then when he caught a breath, he immediatly went over to the ladies, he gave Arrisa a hug, and then he went over to Sayla, hugged her, and buried his head softly on her chest. After he was satisfied, he then gave her a long kiss on the lips. He nearly melted when he kissed her. That was what he needed; to feel her warmth, the same familiar place that he fell in love with.

I'm so sorry for leaving you guys.. I came as fast I could... He uttered softly.

Sayla was a bit confused, but she kept silent, only holding on to him. She could feel him shiver slightly.

Thanatorn - I love you, I love you all.

Arrisa & Sayla - We love you too.

Thanatorn took a hold on Nani. Come here, my sweet angel, he whispered. He cradled her and held her close to him and closed his eyes, wanting to take in everything he can, before they come for him. Sayla and Arrisa looked at eachother in confusion and waited for an answer. They were caught off guard by Thanatorn's sudden behavior, but they somewhat understood.

Arrisa - P'Torn...? Is... everything okay?

Arrisa asked cautiously.

Thanatorn - Yes, Arrisa. Everything is fine now. I'm so happy to be here.

Thanatorn held on to his daughter and sat next to Sayla on the bed, so he can be in the company of both his wife and daughter.

Arrisa - So you're done with the errand you had to do right?

Thanatorn knew he wasn't the least done, but he just gave an answer they wanted to hear.

Thanatorn - Yes.........

For now, anyway, he thought sadly, but quickly smiled to hide any emotions he had.

Sayla - Darling... I'm just happy that you're here now. Don't go anywhere again okay?

Thanatorn swallowed hard, but he just nodded.

Sayla - I won't ask where you went, but whatever it is, don't go anymore okay? Stay here with me... Nani and Arrisa.

Thanatorn wanted to just punch himself in the face as he nodded, knowing that he will have to leave again. Arrisa raised an eyebrow as she watched her brother lie to his wife. She knew him to well. He stays very quiet when he is hiding something unpleasant. But Arrisa knew better than to bring it up now. She has decided to catch up with him when Sayla's asleep or when they are away from the room.

Thanatorn - So.. how's everything? What did the doctor say?

Thanatorn then remembered the check that the stranger gave to him. Later on, he was going to pay a visit to the adminstrator and give them their money, perhaps they would be able to find her a heart sooner.

Sayla - Everything is okay now, darling. Dr. Wiman said that I could go home in a few days.

She lifted up her hospital to review two small devices taped securely to her chest. It was a portable replca of the machine to help her heart pump blood to her body. Thanatorn then found himself stuttering after he saw those things on her chest.

Thanatorn - Baby.. wi...will... will those things.. err.. be safe?

Sayla - Yes, darling. Dr. Wiman said these things are state of the art. It's like a brand new heart, but it's only temporary until they can find me a permenant heart.

Sayla said weakly, but managed to give a warm smile.

Sayla - So everything will be okay. I can't wait to get out of this gown, wear my own comfortable clothes, and go home. Right now, we're just waiting on word from Dr. Wiman, so he can discharge me. I'm just so happy that you came in time, darling. Now.. my life is complete.

Thanatorn - Where is the doctor now? I..I.. need to see him.

Sayla - He was just here a few minutes ago. He said he was going to go prepare my discharge papers.

Thanatorn - Oh.. Baby, I will be right back okay? I want to speak to the doctor for a bit.

Sayla - Okay. Come back soon okay?

Thanatorn - I will.

Thanatorn handed the baby back to Sayla gently, and rose from the bed, and headed towards the door.

Arrisa - Wait, P'Torn! Wait for me!

Arrisa called out, but turned to Sayla and said, I'll be back P'Say, before she ran after Thanatorn. When they both disappeared out of the room, Arrisa ran and caught up with her brother, and walked along side him as he hurried down the hall to go to the adminstrative office.

Arrisa - P'Torn.. what's going on?? You're acting really strange.

Instead of answering her, Thanatorn just kept walking.

Arrisa - P'Torn??!! I know you're hiding something! Tell me??

Still no answer, but kept walking.

Arrisa - P'Torn???????!!!!!! Please! You're scaring me.

And that's when Thanatorn stopped to answer Arrisa. The siblings stood in the middle of the hallway while the nurses and other people in the hospital walked pass them.

Thanatorn - I got the money. I'm going to go give it to them and make them find her a heart.

Arrisa - Really?? That's great then!! Why didn't you say so?

A pause.

Arrisa - But... wait a minute.. how'd you come up with the money so quick???

Another pause.

Arrisa - P'Torn???? Did you do something bad?? Tell me!!!!!

Thanatorn - A man gave it to me.. I..I.. helped him along the way. His car... they were stranded. And then he invited me over to dinner and wrote me a check.

Arrisa - Really???!!!! Well that's great!!

Thanatorn - He doesn't know it yet, but I'm going to pay him back after I come back.

Arrisa - Huh?? Did he want his money back?

Thanatorn - No.

Arrisa - So why do you want to pay him back?? Maybe he gave it to you out of the kindness of his heart.

Thanatorn - I have to. It isn't our money.. and.. I have to make going there worthwhile.

Arrisa - I don't get it.. what are you talking about? Going where??

Thanatorn paused, feeling his vein throb in his head. And then he started the pace and kept walking again.

Arrisa - P'Torn, please don't do this. Please answer me! Going where??? ANSWER ME!!!!!!!

Arrisa didn't realized it, but she just yelled at the top of her lungs, causing some passerby to stop and stare. That's when Thanatorn stopped walking and hestinatly answered his sister.

Thanatorn - I'm going south... into battle. To help capture Sukham. And I will return with money and repay the man.

Arrisa felt the ground pulled out underneath her and her heart skipped a beat and felt nauseated all of a sudden.

Arrisa - What??????????????!!!!!!!!! Did they call you??

Thanatorn - No, I volunteered.

Arrisa - P'Torn! How could you!!!!!!!!!!!!! At a time like this?????

Thanatorn - You won't understand me, I know.

Arrisa - You're right!! I don't understand you! How could you do this????

Thanatorn - I did it for us, Arrisa. For the money...

And then Thanatorn paused as he thought of his hidden agenda. He also wanted to give his wife his heart when he dies in battle.

Arrisa - What you did was stupid, P'Torn!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of replying, Thanatorn walked away. Not wanting to be reminded of his hasty plan that he now regrets. But what's done is done, and he had already gave them his word. And the $50,000 that was given to him will be returned, he thought. He'll go do his duty and return home, everything will be fine. At least he hoped so.

Arrisa was too shocked to move from that spot. She just stared at Thanatorn incredulously as he walked down the hall. Arrisa staggered back and leaned on a wall for support. She then covered her face and cried as people walked pass her. She thought the nightmare was coming to an end, but soon realized that it had just begun.

Part 12

By the time Thanatorn got back from handing over the money to the administrator's office and demanded them to find Sayla a new heart immediately, Sayla and Nani were already asleep. Arrisa, on the other hand waited for her brother. The siblings eyes met as he entered the room, but no words were exchanged. Thanatorn walked quietly over to his wife and daughter to give them kisses while they were asleep. And all the while, Arrisa kept her eyes on him, trying to figure out the logic that she thought wasn't left in her brother.

How did he possible think that enlisting himself into war was a solution? Especially when you've just got a newborn baby and your wife is sick! Arrisa felt herself flush with anger as she thought of these thoughts. But then again, she realized that when her brother is bothered or stressed, he tends to make the most drastic decisions, but this was way worst than any decisions, he'd ever made in his life. Sure, she wasn't a stranger to him going into the military, because he once joined, long before he met Sayla, but this was different. This was real, and Arrisa couldn't bare the thought of losing her brother. No she wouldn't have it. She cared about him too much for him to risk his life like that.

Arrisa crossed her arms and softly cleared her thought, trying to give a cue to him that she wanted to talk, but instead he ignored her. She couldn't believe this. Why is acting this way! She stood up from her seat, feeling angry at him for acting so nonchalant towards her feelings. Arrisa walked toward him and tapped him on the shoulders and whispered, trying not to wake the mother and child.

Arrisa - P'Torn, we need to talk.

Thanatorn - Arrisa.. there's nothing to talk about; I've already made up my mind. And even if I back out, they will still be coming for me.

Arrisa - But I still want to talk to you.

Thanatorn - Can this wait? I just want to spend time with them for now.

Arrisa - No, it cannot wait! Let's go downstairs. I need to talk to you P'Torn.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, I told you, there isn't anything to talk about.

Arrisa couldn't help, but raise her voice eventhough she tried to be quiet. She couldn't help it anymore. Her brother had always been a stubborn man, but this has gone too far.

Arrisa - P'Torn!!!!! I devoted my time to P'Sayla, Nani, and........ you. The least you could do is give me one lousy minute to talk to you!!!!

Thanatorn - SHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Alright, alright. Let's go talk then. But trust me, nothing will change my mind. So you're wasting your time, Arrisa.

Arrisa bit her lip and crossed her arms, trying very hard to hold back the tears that formed. She couldn't believe her brother is acting this way. What came over him? Ever since he came back from his short trip, he seemed so cold. Arrisa didn't like it one bit, and there's no excuse to act this way, especially at a time like this.

The siblings stepped into the dark parking lot in front of the hospital. It was a calm night, no rain or thunder, or lightning. Sometimes night like these were too calm, that it makes you wonder if something is out there, just waiting to attack. The moon was clearly full, and eventhough it wasn't raining, the sky looked a bit hazy.

Thanatorn stood there, cupping his head, waiting for Arrisa to speak. As for Arrisa, she had a million things going through her mind, but she didn't know to begin at all. The tears that hid behind her eyes began to fall as she tried to reason with her brother. When Thanatorn saw that Arrisa was crying, he just turned around, not wanting to face her. He already felt bad enough for doing what he did, but to know that he just made his sister cry, made him feel like a monster. He then place his hands on his hip, and spoke the first words.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, you wanted to talk.. so talk.

Arrisa swallowed the lump inside her throat and made herself speak, eventhough all she wanted to do was cry.

Arrisa - P'Torn.... It's not too late. You can still withdrawl yourself.

There was a short pause. Thanatorn hung his head down, starring at the ground.

Thanatorn - Even if I could, I won't.

Arrisa - But why???!!! You're making a big mistake.

Thanatorn - I have to do what I have to do, Arrisa. You wouldn't understand.

Arrisa - What part won't I understand?? You've got a sick and dying wife! You just got a new daughter. You can't leave, they need you too much.

Thanatorn - That's why you're here, Arrisa. You will take my place while I'm gone.

Arrisa - That's not what I meant, P'Torn. You know exactly what I mean, please don't try to avoid it!!!

Thanatorn - Look...

Thanatorn turned around and lowered his voice.

Thanatorn - I'm sorry... but I really don't have a choice okay?

Arrisa - You do have a choice, but you're too selfish to make the choice!!!

Thanatorn - ARRISA! How can you say that??? Do you honestly think i want to go off to war???????!!!!!!!!! And be away from Sayla and Nani and YOU!!!???? I'm doing this for all of us. I'm protecting us!!! If I had a choice, I would turn back time, but guess what? I can't!!!

Arrisa - But, you can still withdrawl from your enlistment!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanatorn - Arrisa.. I've gone too deep. I cannot turn back now. I have to be a man and face it. Just like when....

Thanatorn closed his eyes and re-opened them, and uttered softly.

Thanatorn - Like when Mom and Dad died...... I had no choice, but to face it like a man. Take on responsibilites.. and step it up. I've already disappointed you... I know.. and I'm sure I will disappoint Sayla when she finds out, but I cannot disappoint this country again. I have to make it worthwhile.

Arrisa - P'Torn.. what if you never come back? And.. what if P'Sayla never gets her heart..... then, Nani will be an orphan!!! I'll........ We'll have no one.

Arrisa's tears started to flow heavily as she thought of their possible fate.

Thanatorn - Arrisa...... trust me.. everything will be okay. I'll be home in no time. Sayla will get her heart. I've already paid those bastards, there's no reason for them to stall this time.

Arrisa - P'Torn, but you know that it's not really up to whether you gave them money or not.. you know that that--

Thanatorn interrupted. He didn't want to hear it. He'd rather be in denial, rather not hear the truth behind the extent of finding his wife a heart.

Thanatorn - Arrisa, trust me. It will be over before you know it. I will be home soon.

Arrisa - But....but...... how will you explain this to, P'Say??

Thanatorn - I'm not worried. Sayla will believe in me.. she'll understand.

Arrisa - I hope so.

Arrisa wiped her tears and sighed heavily. Thanatorn then walked over to her and pulled her in for a hug.

Thanatorn - Arrisa.. thank you. for everything....

*********

The next day, Sayla was discharged from the hospital. There was no telling just how happy she was. She just wanted to get away from the four walls that held her captive under medicines and needles. So now, she could go home and continue her life with her beautiful family, or so she thought.

Everyone sat at Dr. Wimun's office as he gave instructions for the care of Sayla and the temporary devices he implanted in her chest.

Dr. Wimun - Remember... do not do anything that will distress Mrs. Thamadeth okay? Now, sometimes the devices will beep, but just press that button on the side, and it will reset. Nothing to be alarm about okay? Any questions?

Sayla - No doctor. I understand everything. Thank you.

Dr. Wimun - Okay, good. If there is anything, please do not hestitant to call me.

Then a nurse appeared from the door and handed Sayla complete package of instructions and paperwork. Also, included in the package was a beeper.

Dr. Wimun - Mrs. Thamadeth, Mr. Thamadeth, there's a beeper that we've included in the package. What that is a beeper which will sound and alarm you when we have found a donor. That's a cue that you can immediately come to the hospital. You do not need to check in or sign any papers upon arrival. It has all been done for you. All you need to do is come straight to surgery, immediately okay?

Sayla - Yes, doctor. Understood.

Dr. Wimun - Okay, anymore questions?

Thanatorn - Yes, when will you guys get my wife a new heart?

Dr. Wimun - Mr. Thamadeth, as I told you before.. and I've already explained myself, the procedure behind it, is quite--

Thanatorn - But I already paid you people money!!!!!!

Thanatorn couldn't help, but loose his temple when he didn't hear what he wanted to hear.

Sayla - P'Torn.. relax! And besides...... what money?? Where'd you get it? Why didn't I know about this?

Arrisa bit her lip, wanting to blurt out everything, so perhaps Sayla could stop Thanatorn from making a big mistake.

Thanatorn - Uhh..... Umm.... it's.. it's nothing. I'll explain it to you when we get home.

Sayla - Fine. just please, calm down, P'Torn. They are doing the best they can.

Sometimes I wonder, Thanatorn uttered inaudible under his breath.

Sayla - Okay.. can I go now, doctor?

Dr. Wimun - Oh.. yes, yes you may. Take care now.

Sayla - Thank you very much doctor.

Sayla smiled at the doctor, but Thanatorn gave him a disgusted look as they rose from their seat to leave.

*************

Later that night at their home, when the lights went out and Nani and Arrisa were already asleep, Thanatorn rested his head softly on Sayla's stomach as they laid in bed. He couldn't be happier, this is where he belongs; next to her, as close as he possibly can. Sayla cupped his head and stroked his hair, still unaware of the situation that he's in. Thanatorn knew that he has to tell her somehow. He stayed quiet and still, hoping that she won't bring it up, trying his best to polong this moment. But, the silence was broke when Sayla finally asked him the questions that he dread.

Sayla - So tell me, darling...... where'd you go earlier.. and how'd you get the money?

Thanatorn sighed and lifted his head to look into her eyes.

Thanatorn - If I told you everything... will you understand me?

Sayla - You know I would, darling... I always have and I always will.

Thanatorn closed his eyes, and Sayla could feel him shudder. That's when she wrapped her arms around him to assure him that it was okay.

Sayla - Darling.... whatever it is.... I'm sure it will turn out good. Go ahead..... I'll understand anything you throw at me.

Thanatorn took a deep sigh and began to tell her eveything.

After he was done explaining himself, Thanatorn closed his eyes and got ready for Sayla to yell or get angry, but it was the exact opposite. Instead, Sayla embraced him tighter and cupped his face.

Sayla - You did the right thing, darling. I trust that you will come back to me. Your country will be proud of you... and... I will be proud of you.

Thanatorn couldn't believe his ears. He was so sure that Sayla was going to be upset, but instead she supported his decision.

Thanatorn - I promise, I will come home safely. I love you so much, baby. You always understood me.. thank you.

Sayla - Because I love you.

Thanatorn felt so good to know that his wife supported his decision and wasn't angry at all.

Without further words, Thanatorn cupped her face and looked down at his beautiful wife as she laid in their bed. After staring into her warm eyes, he then kissed her lips, taking in every sweet aroma and softness. He traced her lips with his as he moved his hands down her face towards her neck, and then rested them on her stomach. He needed to make love to her right now. It's been so long since he was able to enter that soft warm place where he felt safe and alive.

While he kissed her, his hands moved and took a hold of her shirt, and he lifted her up to pull it over head, being careful not to hurt her. He looked at her boyishly with a yearning desire in his eyes and she knew right away what he wanted, cause she too wanted the same thing. Their breaths became rapid as Thanatorn took off his shirt and continued to kiss her while he fondled her boosoms. He then traced his lips lower and lower and lower, until he reached her belly button. That's when he took a hold of her panties and pulled it off.

Sayla - Wait...darling.. are you sure we can do this?

Yes, Thanatorn replied hungrily. I'll be gentle.

Sayla then smiled sweetly and seductively when she realized that Thanatorn had stripped her naked. That's when he lifted up her legs and spread them to make way for his entrance into her. Their bodies connected and fit perfectly as Thanatorn made love to his wife.

Outside, the moon lit peaceful in the sky, giving light to the lovers as they showered their love and passion towards one another.

*sorry if the love scene is a bit tamed, not the usual wild passionate ones like my other fics. LOL.. remember, it's rated PG-13!!

Part 14

Sayla paused at the door and glanced back at the siblings. Her heart ached, knowing that just within minutes, those uniformed men will take her husband off into a zone that has no mercy for human life. Arrisa held on to Thanatorn and buried her face into his chest. Somehow, the earth knew that there was a storm forming in their hearts, because suddenly the sun was covered by a big grey cloud. It came along with the breeze when those men pulled up in front of their house. In the distance, a roll of thunder could be heard, and the gust of wind picked up as their hearts raced when they heard the doors slammed shut from the officers' door.

P'Torn, please don't go! Arrisa uttered through shakey voice. I have no one else! Arrisa started to sob.

The knocks on the door became eminant. Thanatorn tried to inch towards the door, but Arrisa held him back. Sayla sighed and took a deep breath and reluctantly opened the door. Standing in front of her were two uniformed military men. When they saw Sayla, they both removed their hats and greeted her.

Recruiter #1 - Mrs. Thamadeth?

Sayla - Yes... hello.

Recruiter #1 - Goodmorning, ma'am.

Recruiter #2 - Morning, ma'am.

Sayla - Goodmorning....

Recruiter - Is Mr. Thanatorn Thamadeth here, ma'am? We're here to take him to the station as scheduled.

Sayla - Uhh... ye-yes he's here.

Sayla moved to the side to reveal Thanatorn standing in back of her. Arrisa lifted her head to stare at the men with cold teared covered eyes.

Arrisa - You guys are making a big mistake! He just had a new baby... his wife is--

Thanatorn - Arrisa!!

Arrisa - But it's true! Why do you need my brother? Aren't there plenty of other men to serve you and die for you!

Thanatorn - Arrisa! Stop is this instant. I'm the one who choosed to do this.

Recruiter - Thanatorn Thamadeth, we've got to leave in the next 5 minutes, sir. The train that will take you to the military base in Saifa city will leave in an hour, so we've got not much time.

Thanatorn - Yes, sirs give me two minutes.

Recruiter - Thank you. You have a nice day, Mrs. Thamadeth.

The officers also glanced at Arrisa to bid her a farewell, but Arrisa shot them another hateful glare before the two men tipped their hats at everyone and turned and headed back to their vehicles. Thanatorn took a hold of Arrisa's hands to peel them off of him. He lowered his head and tried to stay as calm as possible as his sister panted.

Thanatorn - Nong Arrisa, I've... I've gotta go.

Through her sobs, Arrisa let go of her brother, but covered her face as she stood in the middle of the kitchen. Just then, Nani wailed from the nursery, and immediately Sayla ran to go get her. Thanatorn disappeared into their bedroom to gather his stuff while Sayla was inside the nursery changing the baby.

Sayla's heart ached very badly and she could feel the device jump widly on her chest, but she tried her best to stay calm. She had already given Thanatorn her word that she wasn't mad, so she intended to keep it that way. As she lifted Nani's leg to slide the diaper underneath, she could feel hot tears falling from her eyes. Sayla quickly wiped her tears away, not wanting Thanatorn or Arrisa to see them, not wanting to make the situation worst than it already is. And just when she lifted Nani off of the changing table, and before she turned around to leave the room, she felt big strong arms reach from behind her to embrace her and Nani. It was Thanatorn, hugging them from behind and resting his head on the nook of her neck.

Thanatorn - Sayla... I love you.. I love you both so much... goodbye for now okay... Thank you so much for understanding me.

Sayla turned around and was wrapped inside his embrace with their daughter between.

Sayla - Darling.. promise you'll stay safe... I love you.

Thanatorn - I will come back to my favotite ladies.. I promise.

They embraced for another minute, and then Thanatorn kissed Sayla on the lips and then kissed his daughter on the cheek.

Thanatorn - Be good for Mommy and Auntie Arriisa okay, baby Nani? Daddy love you.

Nani cooed and smiled at her daddy.

Thanatorn - Goodbye, Sayla... love you forever.

Sayla - Bye darling............

Thanatorn moved towards the door and disappeared out of the room. Sayla stood still, but her knees felt weak, too weak to walk another step, so she sat down on the rocker and held Nani closed to her chest as she cried silently. She couldn't believe that the day was finally here. Never did she think something like this was going to happen to her, but then she should have known better, because nothing is certained in this world, is it?

Thanatorn reappeared in the kitchen where Arrisa was still standing. He walked towards his sister, and gave her another hug.

I love you, Arrisa, he uttered softly. I'll be back before you know it.

Arrisa didn't answer him, but instead she looked away, not wanting to look into his eyes, fearing that it would be the last time.

Goodbye, Thanatorn said one last time. He then quickly walked towards the door and left, closing the door behind him. That's when Arrisa cried out louder. She stood there and hugged herself, and then realized that her brother had just gotten into the vehicle, because she heard the door open and shut.

P'Torn! Wait! Arrisa cried out and marched towards the door.

When she opened it, the vehicle that came to pick him up had already pulled out and headed forward.

Wait!!! Arrisa yelled, but it was no use, the SUV had already disappeared out of the drive way.

I didn't say goodbye.... Arrisa uttered and sob. She staggered back and fell on the steps as she sat there, covering her face and cried.

The droplets of rain fell on her head as she sobbed into her hands. Far in the distance, a storm was getting ready to invade their land and lives. Arrisa knew what kind of storm was coming in, because just last week, that was the same storm that rained on them.

Part 15 coming up.

Part 15

The next couple of days was hard, especially for Arrisa. She couldn't believe that her brother was really gone; off to war. There's really no telling if he will home in one piece, even if he had promised them that he will come back alive and well. Arrisa just stayed in her room, not wanting to show her face to Sayla, fearing that her pain will rub off to anyone who looks at her.

Outside, the horrid rain kept pouring its wet sorrow. And inside, there was a storm in everyone's heart. Aside from enjoying Nami's youth and innocence, Arrisa and Sayla once again faces a deep heartache knowing that the man they both love is out there somewhere. They'll never know if he's being shot at or if bombs are coming his way. Ever since he left, the women has been waiting eagerly for mails, hoping and prating that it is Thanatorn writing them to tell them that everything is okay so far. Once they recieve the letter, then they'll know that's when it's okay to reply back with letters and care paclages. But five days have past, and still nothing.

Arrisa sat on the bed, hugging her pillow, and was going over her family album when there was a knock on the door. On the other end, a soothing voice called out.

Sayla - Arrisa? It's me.. Can I come in?

Arrisa quickly hid her family album under her pillow, not wanting Sayla to see her distress. She also wiped her tears away.

Arrisa - Urh.. P'Sayla.. go ahead, it's unlocked.

Sayla opened the door and poked her head in. She walked in with a huge smile on her face and hands behind her back, as if she has some terrific news to report.

Sayla - Arrisa.. guess what a bird brought in?

Arrisa - A bird?

Sayla - Yes, silly... you know, back in the old days, dove's would send messages to people. That's how they communicate.

Arrisa - That's silly, P'Sayla.. that only happens in fairytales, and... unfortunately...

Arrisa sighed and lowered her voice.

Arrisa - We do't live in a fairytale, instead we live in realty where we were born to suffer a never ending sorrow.

Sayla - Nonsense!

Sayla smiled cheerfully.

Sayla - Fairytales are based on real life you know. It really happens that way, that's why people are able to write about it.

Arrisa - It may be based on real life, but it's so exaggerated! And.. a bunch of lies..

Arrisa hugged her pillow and pouted. And she then raised her head realizing that she may be bringing Sayla down with her negativity.

Arrisa - Uhrr... Sorry, P'Say.. I'm so bad. I'm making things worst. (Sigh) You're the one who just came out of the hospital, and yet, you're so optimistic about things.

Sayla - It's okay, Nong Arrisa. I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes you just got to believe... that's all.

Sayla then slowly brought an envelope from the back of her. She smiled warmly while showing the envelope to Arrisa.

Sayla - Look what I found, Arrisa. A letter from P'Torn.

Arrisa's eyes widened and she quickly snatched the letter out of Sayla's hand and eagerly ripped it open. Sayla just laughed, happy to see Arrisa excited and joyous for the very first time in a week. Once she ripped the envelope to shreds, she unfolded the letter and read it out loud.

To my favorite ladies,

I want to start off by letting you all know how much I miss you. I sleep peacefully at night knowing that you guys are safe in our home. So please continue enjoying your days okay? Doing so will make me happy, and it will give me the courage out here. I have a really funny partner, his name is Kade. Everytime he opens his mouth, I laugh really hard. So it's not that bad out here.. Right now, it's about 10:00PM and I'm doing my nightly guard. And then tomorrow, we'll have a day of training and then off I go to defend our country.

How's my baby girl? I bet she's getting prettier and prettier, just like her Mother huh. And what about my baby sister? Still naughty as usual? And my beautiful wife.. thank you again for understanding me. Please take care of eachother okay? I will be home soon. By the way.. the food's not bad at all.. we have our own personal chef, but you know what? I'd rather eat Arrisa's burnt chicken any day. (Hehe)

P.S.

Write me as much as you can. I'll be looking forward to your letters. Oh, and please give Nani lots of kisses for me.

Love always,

Thanatorn

By the time Arrisa finished reading the letter, both the ladies have big smile on their faces. Arrisa then carefully folded the letter and reached for a box and placed it safely inside.

Sayla - See.. everything will be okay, Nong Arrisa.

Arrisa - Yes.. but still..

Sayla - He will come home to us before we know it. So in the meantime, let's write him lots of letters and bake his favorite treats and send it over. How about the three of us go shopping today and get a care package ready?

Arrisa - Okay, gimme 5 minutes.

Sayla - While you get ready, I'm going to get Nani ready then.

Arrisa - Do you need any help, P'Say?

Sayla - No.. I've got it. Thanks. Oh.. and how about we cook Pad'Thai tonight? I'm craving for that right now.

Arrisa - Sounds like a plan, P'Say.

Arrisa giggled and rose from her bed. And right when Sayla was about to leave the room, Arrisa called out to her.

Arrisa - P'Say?

Sayla - Hmm?

Arrisa - Thank you...

Sayla gave Arrisa a warm smile and left the room. When she got to the middle of a living room, suddenly there was a sharp pain that shot up her back, stopping her from going further. She stood there, trying to wait out the pain, hoping that it was nothing.

Please.. not now.. Please... Sayla uttered softly.

And then, as if something power was listening to her, the pain miraculously went away. That's when Sayla took a deep breath and continued to get Nani ready for the outing. She was about to let anything happen to her. She vowed to stay strong and healthy for Thanatorn, so when he get's back, they can be a happy family again.

*****************

At the training ground, Thanatorn kept focused of the commander General as he pointed to a map showing the ins and out of the terrain. The object was to capture Sukham Sone and his men, so that they could stop terrorizing the city and their own nation. For years, many civilians has been protesting for Sukham to be overthrown due to his dictatorship, but no one was ever succesful. They just end up being exiled or killed. And now, there is help from the North and the civilains was more than happy to have the Thai troops in their little providence.

Kade poked Thanatorn's rib to get his attention to mimick the big and strong, but balding general. He's always trying to crack jokes or make people laugh; to him, humor will make everything easier.

Kade! I'm trying to listen to the General, Thanatorn whispered.

Haha.. man.. it's easy, just find the bastarrd and kill! We don't need no lessons, Kade laughed in a whisper.

Shhh! This is important. We need to study that map, Kade. Thanatorn protested.

Alright, alright.. man.. but I need a beer and a smoke, after this.

Just when Kade said that, a loud overpowering noise came towards them. And one of the soldiers knew what it was.

GRANADE!!! EVERYONE, SEEK SHELTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A soldier yelled.

Immediately, Kade and Thanatorn ran to the nearest dirt pile and crouch down and shielded their heads, just when the Grenade exploded. There were screams coming from the tent that they were in. That's when Thanatorn realized that some people didn't make it out of the tent. Thanatorn stayed in a soldier crawl position and panted. He had to feel for his arms and legs to make sure that he was still alive. The entire area was very smokey that it was harrd to see who was who and what was around them. And then through the smoke, he heard Kade's voice, a confirmation that he was still alive.

Kade - That was close. You okay man???

Thanatorn - Yeah... I'm... I'm okay.

Part 16 coming up.
