In fact, before I went to asia I don't really understand the water problem ; I am lucky to live in France where water is very cheap : some private water are cheaper than public, so it's more interesting to buy.
But when I was in asia, I mostly drink soda because water is more expansive. Moreover, some private companies producte water from very bad quality...so I really realised there is a big problem.
I think govement must take care of giving everyone the possibility to choose if they want buy private water or public ; make public water be good quality or make private water be affortabled by everyone.

There have been some recent scandals where some water companies claim their water is from some fresh spring. Turns out there is no magical place where they got their water from. Its pretty much tap water with some extra work so they say. Realistically speaking in the US the water purification process for public tap water is actually damn good. Here at least in WA I drink straight out of tap for years now. Even in Thailand, adding a water filter to the tap is fine. I drank water that way for at least 2 years.
It is ridiculous the prices we're willing to pay for bottle water yet we bitch about the gas prices which is even cheaper then water. There is something wrong with that picture.
There is of course plenty of places to use bottled water but I can't believe the average citizen thinks the price is fair.
Anyway I'll stop my rant now. If you guys are a little more curious read the link below to read some interesting information.
