"For You I Will"

A Short Story Written By: tEaRdRoP

What is Love? That is a question many people sought to answer. But there is no one right answer, for everyone has his or her own interpretation of love. Some view love as something that makes a person complete, others view it as a deadly game of pain. Yet, I see love as something sacred and beautiful. I'm not saying my definition is right, you may disagree with me, but you have to admit when you're in love everything just looks more beautiful than it usually is.

People fall in and out of love everyday, but do they understand why? No, it's something that just happens. I, Aom, for one, don't understand it either. My friends have asked me so many times, "Why do I love him?" I could never give them a clear answer. They wouldn't have understood my reasons anyway. All I can say is, "There is no reason for me loving him so much. I just do. Love doesn't choose a person, it could happen to anyone. It's that plain and simple."

Part: 1

Aom cuddled up in her favorite couch in front of her flat screen TV watching her favorite show, Sex in the City when a loud knock on the door pulled her attention from the screen. 'Who could that be at this hour?' she questioned herself sitting up straight. The knocks continued more rapidly and more forcefully. Aom sighed and eventually crawled out of the couch and slowly walked to the door.

"This better be important!" she whined walking to the door. Aom looked thru the peephole and frowned. But she didn't wait any longer and quickly unlocked the door and opened it.

"Captain, what are you doing here?" Aom asked confused as she looked into his tired, lifeless eyes.

Captain didn't answer; instead he wrapped his arms around her and embraced her tightly. Aom's eyes roamed around, unsure of what was happening, and slowly brought her arms up slowly, caressing his back.

"Come inside," she managed to say.

Captain slowly released her and nodded his head. Aom watched him walked inside dragging his feet as she closed the door behind them. She took a deep breath and went into the kitchen to get him a cold drink. She placed the drink in front of him and waited for him to speak.

"Aom," he said in a scratchy voice, "What am I going to do? She's going to leave me." Aom's heart skipped a beat, stopping for a brief second. She looked into his sad face and reached for his hand. "I don't understand it Aom. Everything that I did was for her," Captain continued in a shaky voice trying to hold his emotions together. Aom held her breath hoping he would not cry in front of her. "I love her. Why can't she see how much I love her!" he cried out.

Aom released his hand and trembled inside as the word echoed thru her ears, "I Love her!" Tears formed in the corners of her eyes as she looked into his teary eyes. One tear slid down her cheek, but she quickly wiped it away.

"Bua would be a fool if she leaves. She's the luckiest person alive to have someone like you by her side." Aom uttered softly lowering her head trying to avoid his eyes. She was afraid he would see the weakness in her voice. She pressed her lips together tightly. "Can't he see how much he is hurting me?" she thought to herself.

Captain shook his head in defeat. "I don't know. Something in her voice made it clear that this would be the end. I don't know if I can handle it if it happens."

Aom took his hand again and caressed it gently. "It won't be the end of the world. There are plenty of girls out there waiting for someone like you. You'll find someone."

Captain eased his hand out of hers and looked into her eyes, "I don't think I could love anyone else." He replied and stood up from the couch. Aom stood up slowly with sadness written all over her face. "I'd better get going. I've taken too much of your time." He forced a smile and walked toward the door.

"It's ok," Aom said hiding her hurt as she followed him.

"Thanks for listening," he posed another fake smile.

Aom returned his smile as he waved and walked down the hall. After he left, she slowly closed the door behind and sank to the floor. She leaned her head against the door and looked up at the ceiling. Uncontrollable tears ran down her face. She couldn't understand why she liked to hurt herself like this. She wiped the tears away, but they kept on coming like a broken faucet.

Part 2:

"Good morning Aom," Tao greeted her when she walked into the office. "You're here early today."

"Hey!" Aom smiled at her best friend, "Just doing a little check up on my articles before I send it printing. You know the big boss wants this issue to be perfect."

(Both Aom and Tao are writers for Image Magazine, one of the biggest magazine company in Thailand.)

"Yeah, I know what you mean. He's been pressuring us like crazy," Tao said taking her seat.

"Aom," Lynn, the secretary, entered the room.

Aom looked up from her papers and looked at Lynn, "Yes?"

"There's a gentleman outside waiting to see you," Lynn replied.

"Who is it Lynn?" Tao asked concerned.

"He said his name is Captain," Lynn answered shortly.

"Thanks, tell him I should be there shortly," Aom said quickly as she sense Tao's deadly stares.

"Why do you do this to yourself?" Tao asked as Lynn left the room. "I just don't understand you!"

Aom lowered her head and avoided Tao's eyes. How could she explain to her that love has no reasons? It just happens and it could happen to anyone, even if they don't receive it in return.

"What do you want me to do?" Aom asked ignoring her friend's question and stood up from her desk. "I can't get him off my mind."

"But why Aom? Why do you keep hurting yourself? I've seen you waste so many tears on him. How much hurt can you handle? Don't you feel sorry for yourself?" Tao confronted her. "Well it hurts me to see you cry and I want you to stop doing it to yourself!"

"If it hurts you to see me cry, how do you think I feel when I see him miserable?" Aom protested. "It kills me."

Tao shook her head slowly. She knew it was useless trying to talk her out of it. Aom reached for her hand, "I'll be fine. I know what I'm doing." With that, she turned and walked to the waiting room.

Once in front of the waiting room, Aom took a deep breath preparing herself for the drama inside. She opened the door quietly and walked in with a perfect smile on her face.

"She packed her things today," Captain said flatly.

The smile on Aom's face quickly faded. He didn't even say hi. Bua was the only thing on his mind. She exhaled slowly and swallowed her hurt. She sat gently on the chair next to him and placed her hand on top of his.

"What am I going to do?" he choked. "How am I going to live without her? Aom, I love her so much!"

Aom absorbed in the dreadful words, 'I lover her so much' and closed her eyes, 'No, you're not going to cry in front of him' she scolded herself.

"Maybe she just needs time apart," Aom managed to say to him. "You know girls are that way sometimes." Captain shook in head not taking her answers. Aom squeezed his hand for support.

Captain looked in her eyes, "Why can't she be more like you?" he mumbled and pulled her into his arms.

Tears filled her eyes as she held him tightly, 'Why does it matters? You still don't love me,' she cried inside.

After many comforting words, Aom managed to calm Captain down. He gave her the usual smile and left her with a painful stab in the heart. Aom returned to her desk avoiding Tao's stares. But Tao followed her to her desk. She knew Aom had been crying.

"See this is exactly what I'm talking about!" Tao said bitterly. "You do everything for him and does he see it? NO! At the end, you're the only one hurting!"

"But it's not his fault. I do these things to myself!" Aom replied.

"Until this very moment, you still defend him. Why?" Tao asked wanting to smack some senses back into her.

Aom didn't answer. Why bother? Tao would never understand her anyways. She sniffed loudly and wiped the tears from her face. Tao exhaled loudly and handed her a tissue. She shook her head at Aom and returned to her desk.

Aom looked over to her friend who began smacking down on her keyboard. 'It's because I love him,' she wanted to tell her.

Part 3:

The next day, Aom's mind drifted in and out of her work. Finally she gave up and pushed the labtop aside. There was no use in trying to work when her heart was not with her. She looked at the time 5:15 PM. She rubbed her face, trying to set her mind straight. But that didn't help for when she opened her eyes, all she could see was Captain's face.

"Why?" she shouted, slamming her fist into her desk. "Why can't I get you out of my mind?"

She grabbed a hold of her throbbing fist and pushed her chair back. She bit her lips and stood up. She walked over to the window and looked out into the busy city life. "Who out there is in my shoes?" she wondered as she watched people walking by.

"Aom?" Tao said loudly as she walked in. Aom shuddered back with fear. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Are you ok?" Tao asked concerned.

Aom took a deep breath. "I'm ok."

Tao narrowed her eyes at her as she gave a convincing smile. "Me and the gang are going out tonight. You want to join us?" Tao said finally giving in to her innocent smile. Aom shook her head. "Oh, come on. It's Friday night. Beside you need to get away from all of this madness!" Tao pressured.

"I'd rather not. I'm too tired," Aom replied flatly.

"Really Aom, you should," Tao continued.

"No thanks," Aom quickly declined.

"Fine, then," Tao exhaled finally giving up. "But promise me you're going to get a good night sleep."

Aom nodded her head. Tao smiled and patted her hand. "I'll see you Monday morning then. Have a good weekend." She said as she left the room.

Aom gathered her things and left the office. Thirty minutes later she pulled up to her apartment complex and made her way to her room.

"Captain," Aom gasped when she saw him drunk in front of her door. She quickly ran to him and tapped him on the face trying to wake him up. "Hey, are you ok?" she asked.

Captain opened his eyes and mumbled things she couldn't understand. But she did recognize one word, "Bua". She was overwhelmed with sadness. She exhaled and ran her hand thru his sweaty face before getting up to open her door.

Once inside, she slowly laid him down her couch. Then she went to get a damped towel to wipe down his sweaty face and body.

"Bua," Captain mumbled and grabbed her hand quickly when he felt the damped towel on his face.

Aom stopped and looked down at him. "It's me Aom," she uttered softly.

Captain released her hand and slowly opened his eyes. Aom put the damped towel back in the bowl and sat on the coffee table speechless.

"Aom," he moaned, "Why doesn't she care about me like you do?"

"Nonsense, of course she does." She replied trying to keep her voice steady.

"You know you're lucky you're not me." He remarked ignoring her comment. "I mean I love her so much and she just throws my love away like a dirty rag."

Aom nodded her head sadly in response.

"You'll never know how much it hurts to have your love go unnoticed like mine. It's the worst pain you'll ever feel." He murmured. "Don't fall in love with someone who don't love you back."

The words sent chills down her spines but she kept a straight face. 'What do you mean I don't understand how it feels? I'm feeling the pain right now as we speak,' she sobbed inside.

When she returned her focus back to him, he was fast asleep still mumbling to himself. She ran her fingers thru his hair. "Why can't you see the one who loves you is right here?" she whispered.
* * *

The next morning Aom woke up with a slight headache. She eased herself out of bed and walked out to the empty living room. Captain was gone. All that was left of him was a neatly folded blanket on the couch. She walked to the couch and picked up a note he'd left behind.

It read:

Thank you for everything. I hope I didn't cause you too much trouble last night. You're a real friend. Captain.

She held the note tightly in her hand as she slowly sank onto the couch. "Yes," she whispered, "I'm only your friend."

Part 4:

Aom stood in front of the mirror, eyeing herself from head to toe. "Am I not pretty?" she wondered and sighed with grief as she cupped her face with her small hands. 'Maybe I need a little more makeup?' she thought but shook her head at the idea. She exhaled slowly and sat down to put on her shoes.

Saturday afternoon and there was nothing to do but go shopping. Aom drove to the nearest mall. She browsed in many stores, but left each empty handed. Finally she walked in her favorite shop, Beyond Novels. She love to read and bought 3 new romance novels from the shop. "This is should keep me busy for a while," she replied happily as she walked out of the bookstore.

"Aom?" a voice said behind her.

Aom stopped, not recognizing the voice but turned around to see a familiar face. "Bua," She uttered in surprise.

Bua smiled, "How are you? I haven't seen you lately."

"I'm good," Aom answered quickly. "And you?"

"Good," Bua replied, "Well it was nice seeing you again. I'm heading out. I'll talk to you later ok."

"Wait!" Aom protested in a heartbeat. "Uh, can I talk to you privately? It's about Captain."

Bua's facial expression changed but she agreed to talk to Aom about it. The two found a small coffee shop and sat in the corner where they could have some privacy.

"So," Aom began casually, "What exactly happened between you and Captain?"

Bua looked at Aom and took a deep breath. "As you know, Captain and I have been together for quite some time and I feel we shouldn't keep ourselves locked up in just one relationship."

"You mean you want to see other people?" Aom interrupted.

"I mean, it's a big world out there and I don't want to limit myself. I want to explore and find my true self. We're still young," Bua tried to break down her feelings. "You know what I mean?"

Aom opened her mouth but no words came out. 'How could she say that?' she thought.

"Besides, lately we've been fighting a lot, too, over stupid things," she added. "I just figured I need a break from him."

"But do you still love him?" Aom blurted out unintentionally.

Bua looked at her stunned and slowly lowered her eyes, "I did once, but now, I'm not so sure."

'What?!' Aom wanted to yell at her but she held her temper inside. 'How could you not know if you love someone after being with them for such a long time?' she thought.

"I think I still do love him, but I don't know if I'm still in love with him," Bua clarified herself as if she could read Aom's mind.

Aom didn't reply. Suddenly she was overwhelmed with sorrow. The image of Captain's sad face flickered in her head. She knew if this were the end for them, Captain would surely go insane.

"You know, I wish I could be you. I would be enjoying life and wouldn’t have to worry about being in love. It's so complicated," Bua sighed.

Aom forced a smile. If only Bua knew how much she wanted to be her. She would never hurt Captain the way she is hurting him right now. If they could change places with her, she would jump at it in an instant, but she knew that was impossible.

"My words to you Aom," Bua exhaled slowly, "Don't fall in love." With that she stood up, picked up her bags, and waved goodbye.

Aom sat there numb and she watched Bua walked away. 'Don't fall in love,' the phrase played itself inside her head like a broken record.

"It's too late," Aom whispered, "I'm already in love with him."

Part 5:

For the next few days, Aom and Tao worked hard on their articles. Their work area's been busy and that was a good thing for Aom. It kept her mind off of Captain for a while. Their February Issue was finished in time for Valentine's Day and about to be released. It was meetings day in and day out. Finally the week was done.

"I can't believe we've survive the week," Tao Buaounced exhausted. "I'm going to go have a drink to relax my mind. You want to join me?"

"No, you go ahead. I'm beat." Aom replied stretching her arms.

"I knew you were going to say that. Why do I even bother?" Tao replied and grabbed her bag. "Well see you next week then. Bye."

"Bye," Aom waved and gathered her things.

Outside, it began to sprinkle. "Great," she exclaimed and ran to her car. She got in and started the engine. A few minutes later she pulled out of the parking lot.

20 minutes into the drive, it began to rain a little harder. "What's next?" she mumbled as traffic began to slow down. Up ahead she could see sirens, but something else caught her eyes. The car next to the ambulance, it was Captain's. She quickly pulled off on the side of the road and ran out of the car to the accident scene.

"Ma'am, you can't go there," a police officer told her.

"But I know him," she pointed out. The police officer looked at her and let her thru. Aom ran up to the paramedics and grabbed a hold of Captain's hand as he was being pushed on the stretcher.

"Can I go with him?" she asked one of the paramedics. The paramedic nodded her head.

Aom sat inside the ambulance keeping a close eye on him. She was afraid if she blinked she would lose him. She looked at his swollen face and began to cry. "Please be ok," she sobbed holding his hand up to her chest.

At the hospital, Aom followed him until they reached the ICU room. She stood outside with cold feet as she waited for the results. Each dreadful minute that ticked by tortured her soul. What seem like eternity, the doctor finally emerged from the ICU room. Aom ran up to him, but he cut her off before she could say anything.

"Nurse, we need O positive blood quickly," he said.

"But we're out of stock," the nurse replied quickly. The two looked at one another hopelessly.

"I'm O positive!" Aom blurted. The two turned their heads to her and nodded. The nurse took her into a small room and began to pump her blood. After she gave enough blood, the nurse rushed the blood to the doctor. Aom followed and waited impatiently outside.

2 hours went by, and the doctor finally walked out of the ICU room exhausted. Aom ran up to him in a flash. "Doctor, how is he?" she asked with worried eyes.

"He'll be ok," the doctor replied, "thanks to you."

Aom let out a small cried. "Thank you," she replied with a smile, "Thank you so much."

They moved Captain into a regular room. Aom followed and seated herself next to him carefully watching over him. Tears ran down her face seeing him all bruised up and in bandages. Then suddenly, he let out a small moan. She wiped her tears away quickly and reached for his hand. She squeezed it firmly and moved closer to him.

"Bua," he moaned. She choked on her breath and backed away when she heard him call out her name. She wiped the rest of the tears that still lingered and placed his hand back on the bed. She cleared her throat and dialed Bua's number.

"Hello," Bua answered.

"Bua, Captain's in the hospital!" Aom said in a raspy voice.

"What?" Bua shrieked. "What happened? How is he?"

"He's ok now," Aom, replied, "He's at Bangkok Medical right now."

Bua exhaled slowly, "Thank God."

"I'm just calling to let you know," Aom said, "You should come and see him. He needs you more than ever." Aom paused, waiting for Bua's response but she never did. "Bua? Are you still there? Hello?" Aom repeated.

Then she heard * buzz *, the line was disconnected.

Part 6:

Early the next morning, Aom opened her eyes as the first light shine thru the window. She rubbed her eyes and looked over to Captain. He was still fast asleep. She smiled and walked to the bathroom to wash her face. When she got out, she looked at the time. It was 5 AM. She yawned and sat back down watching him breathing peacefully. She placed her hand on top of his and leaned forward on the bed.

2 hours later, Captain slowly opened his eyes. He felt someones hand on his and looked over to his right side.

"Bua," he whispered. Aom felt his hand moving and opened her eyes from her quick nap. She sat up and smiled at him happily.

"Captain, you're awake," she said softly.

"Aom," Captain replied when his vision cleared up.

Aom reclined back into the chair and removed her hand from his. She sat numb in the chair just looking at him. Neither one said a thing to one another for a while. Then the nurse walked in. Aom stood up and moved aside so the nurse could perform her duties. Aom turned and walked to the bathroom to wash her face again. She stood in front of the mirror and stared at her reflection as tears began to build up in her eyes.

"Every breath he takes in is Bua," she exhaled and closed her eyes letting the tears slowly run down her cheeks. After a while she wiped the tears away and glared at herself in the mirror. "Come on Aom be strong, don't weak out now," she told herself. She took a deep breath and walked out of the bathroom, but stop mid way when she saw Bua standing over Captain. She slightly stumbled back to the wall and leaned against it for support.

"Oh Captain," Bua cried holding his hand tightly.

"I'm ok. Don't cry baby," Captain replied.

"I would have been here sooner, but I was out of town. I drove all night to get to you," Bua said with tears in her eyes. "I've been a fool." Bua uttered and placed her hand on his cheek. "I'm so sorry.

"Don't say that. Nothing matters anymore. I'm just glad youre here." Captain replied. Bua let out a happy laugh and wrapped her arms around him.

Aom choked as she watched the two holding one another. Unstoppable tears poured from her eyes as the image stabbed her deeply inside her heart. She wiped the tears from her face, enough to clear up her eyes so she could see where she was walking. She quickly slipped out of the room without saying good-bye to either of them.
* * *

Aom drove all day and almost all night before returning to her apartment. She walked inside and went straight to the shower. She stood there motionless letting the water wash away her pain. After a long hot shower, she emerged from the steamed bathroom. She threw on her sweats and walked into the living room. She noticed her answering machine blinking and went to play her messages.

- Beep - 'You have 2 new messages. First message'

"Hey, it's me Tao. Just called to see how you were doing. Call me when you get the message. Bye.'

- Beep * Next message -

"Aom, I know what you did for me from the Doctor. But you left before I got the chance to say Thank You. So thank you for giving me a new life and for bringing Bua to me. You're a real friend."

- Beep * End of messages -

Aom stood over the answering machine with tears in her eyes. After all that she has done for him. She was still only a friend to him. She swallowed the lump in her throat and erased the messages. She picked up the phone and called Tao.

"Hey," Aom said with no life in her voice.

"Where have you been? I've been trying to get a hold of you all day," Tao replied.

"I was at the hospital." Aom answered.

"What?" Tao exclaimed, "Are you ok?"

"It's not me. It was Captain. He got into a car accident," Aom told her. "But he's ok now, Bua's there."

"Aom," Tao's voice changed to a softer tone.

"I'm ok," Aom interrupted. She knew what Tao was going to say to her. "Don't worry."

They exchanged a couple of words before Aom let her go. She hung up the phone slowly and she walked over to her balcony. She leaned over the bars and closed her eyes letting the cool breeze take her away.

It's strange, no matter what the person you love does, you'll always find a place in you heart to forgive them and forget the things they've said and done. Like how quickly Captain forgave Bua for leaving. But that was the beauty of love and Aom knew it. No matter how much Captain has hurt her, she'd never regret one minute of her time with him.

"You don't need to thank me, Captain," she whispered to the wind. Then she opened her eyes and looked up at the stars shining brightly above. "For everything I've done for you is from the bottom of my heart, even if no one understands why. But I do. Because I love you and for you I will."

@}~~~ The End ~~~ {@
