Part 6:
Early the next morning, Aom opened her eyes as the first light shine thru the window. She rubbed her eyes and looked over to Captain. He was still fast asleep. She smiled and walked to the bathroom to wash her face. When she got out, she looked at the time. It was 5 AM. She yawned and sat back down watching him breathing peacefully. She placed her hand on top of his and leaned forward on the bed.
2 hours later, Captain slowly opened his eyes. He felt someones hand on his and looked over to his right side.
"Bua," he whispered. Aom felt his hand moving and opened her eyes from her quick nap. She sat up and smiled at him happily.
"Captain, you're awake," she said softly.
"Aom," Captain replied when his vision cleared up.
Aom reclined back into the chair and removed her hand from his. She sat numb in the chair just looking at him. Neither one said a thing to one another for a while. Then the nurse walked in. Aom stood up and moved aside so the nurse could perform her duties. Aom turned and walked to the bathroom to wash her face again. She stood in front of the mirror and stared at her reflection as tears began to build up in her eyes.
"Every breath he takes in is Bua," she exhaled and closed her eyes letting the tears slowly run down her cheeks. After a while she wiped the tears away and glared at herself in the mirror. "Come on Aom be strong, don't weak out now," she told herself. She took a deep breath and walked out of the bathroom, but stop mid way when she saw Bua standing over Captain. She slightly stumbled back to the wall and leaned against it for support.
"Oh Captain," Bua cried holding his hand tightly.
"I'm ok. Don't cry baby," Captain replied.
"I would have been here sooner, but I was out of town. I drove all night to get to you," Bua said with tears in her eyes. "I've been a fool." Bua uttered and placed her hand on his cheek. "I'm so sorry.
"Don't say that. Nothing matters anymore. I'm just glad youre here." Captain replied. Bua let out a happy laugh and wrapped her arms around him.
Aom choked as she watched the two holding one another. Unstoppable tears poured from her eyes as the image stabbed her deeply inside her heart. She wiped the tears from her face, enough to clear up her eyes so she could see where she was walking. She quickly slipped out of the room without saying good-bye to either of them.
* * *
Aom drove all day and almost all night before returning to her apartment. She walked inside and went straight to the shower. She stood there motionless letting the water wash away her pain. After a long hot shower, she emerged from the steamed bathroom. She threw on her sweats and walked into the living room. She noticed her answering machine blinking and went to play her messages.
- Beep - 'You have 2 new messages. First message'
"Hey, it's me Tao. Just called to see how you were doing. Call me when you get the message. Bye.'
- Beep * Next message -
"Aom, I know what you did for me from the Doctor. But you left before I got the chance to say Thank You. So thank you for giving me a new life and for bringing Bua to me. You're a real friend."
- Beep * End of messages -
Aom stood over the answering machine with tears in her eyes. After all that she has done for him. She was still only a friend to him. She swallowed the lump in her throat and erased the messages. She picked up the phone and called Tao.
"Hey," Aom said with no life in her voice.
"Where have you been? I've been trying to get a hold of you all day," Tao replied.
"I was at the hospital." Aom answered.
"What?" Tao exclaimed, "Are you ok?"
"It's not me. It was Captain. He got into a car accident," Aom told her. "But he's ok now, Bua's there."
"Aom," Tao's voice changed to a softer tone.
"I'm ok," Aom interrupted. She knew what Tao was going to say to her. "Don't worry."
They exchanged a couple of words before Aom let her go. She hung up the phone slowly and she walked over to her balcony. She leaned over the bars and closed her eyes letting the cool breeze take her away.
It's strange, no matter what the person you love does, you'll always find a place in you heart to forgive them and forget the things they've said and done. Like how quickly Captain forgave Bua for leaving. But that was the beauty of love and Aom knew it. No matter how much Captain has hurt her, she'd never regret one minute of her time with him.
"You don't need to thank me, Captain," she whispered to the wind. Then she opened her eyes and looked up at the stars shining brightly above. "For everything I've done for you is from the bottom of my heart, even if no one understands why. But I do. Because I love you and for you I will."
