Love Letters

A Short Story Written by tEaRdRoP
Starring Oil Thana, Aum Patcharapa, & Por Skidjai

"Some times it is easier for one to express his or her feelings on papers."

Part 1:

Aum dreamed heavenly as she stopped at the red light, fingers drumming on the steering wheel. A sweet smile curled up on her pink, full lips as the image of her beloved boyfriend appeared in her mind. She blushed slightly, reliving the way he kissed her gently on the cheek each night before they parted. And the way he would hold her, so gentle like she was a rare jewel. She waited patiently for the light to turn green, although her heart was beating faster than the speed of light. She wanted to be in his arms in a heartbeat and breathe in every ounce of his love.

At last the light did not torture her soul any longer and turned green. Aum changed gear instantly and accelerated toward her boyfriend's condo as her free hand brushed swiftly over the small silver box in the passenger seat, a token for his love.

Soon enough, she was standing in front of the elevator of his condo. She ran her hands quickly thru her hair, building her confidence, then moved on to adjust her silky dress as she stared at her reflection thru the silver elevator door.

* Bing * the elevator door slid open and Aum gracefully stepped inside, giving a warm smile to the people getting off. She continued to smile as her eyes engaged at the two elderly couple holding hands. She pictured herself like that one day.

6th floor, Aum held the gift tightly with both hands against her chest as she stepped out of the elevator. Her heart pounded heavily as she imagined the surprise look on his face when he sees her. The temptation was killing her inside. She quickly kissed the small box and giggled to herself as rubbed her lip prints off. Finally, the elevator stopped on her floor. She gracefully stepped off and walked quickly down the hall, but not to the point where she looked eager, but more gracefully gliding.

Room 675, she took a deep breath and flicked her bangs away from her eyes, not wanting to miss the special moment of his face when he sees her. She ran her hands down her dress, smoothing out the wrinkles the wind has caused as she walked thru the halls. Extremely alluring and nonetheless flawless, was how she wanted to look for her man.

After several minutes of adjusting herself, she reached for the doorknob and turned it gently so that he would not hear her come in. Sensing the accomplishment of a clear coast, she quickly stepped inside and quietly closed the door behind. Her eyes roamed the area, pinpointing his location. She smiled as the swaying curtain from the cool night breeze blew his covers. She let out a small, quick giggle and tipped toe thru the living room and out to the balcony.

"Peek-a-boo!" she chanted excitedly as she stepped out onto the balcony. But the cheerful expression on her face quickly faded as she stared into the heartbreaking image before her. Shaken up by the scene, the small box slipped thru her fingers and landed opened on the floor, exposing the gold genuine watch inside.

"What is the meaning of this Oil?" she demanded confused yet very upset, charging at him. He stood up, avoiding her question, and then turned his head from her cold stares. Gripping him by the shirt, she pulled him away from the girl he was dining with. "And who the hell is she?"

When he didn't answer, she dodged at the girl swearing to tear her body apart. But Oil was quick to react and pulled the girl behind, shielding her away from Aum's flying hands. "Alicia, go and wait for me inside," Oil instructed the girl.

Trembling with fear, Alicia did as she was told and tried for a fast escape. Breaking out in rage, Aum grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back, going for a good slap. But she did not succeed. Anticipating that Aum would do such a thing, Oil grabbed a hold of her hand and released Alicia's hair from her fingers.

"You Bitch!" Aum shouted after her with tears of anger. Oil quickly pulled her into his arms from behind, trying to hold her back from another outbreak.

Trying to regain control of her emotions, Aum closed her eyes, letting the tears streamed slowly down her cheeks. His touch was so refreshing and soothing somehow that it didn't make any sense to her. She could feel him embracing her tightly, so tight that she could feel his warm breath the back of her neck. She took in a deep breath savoring being in his arms for the last time, and then exhaled loudly, breaking free from his secured arms. She then turned around swiftly and looked deadly into his shameless face.

Until this very minute, he still hadn't said a single word. With quivering lips, Aum tried to search for answers thru his almond eyes. But that was like a jigsaw puzzle for they had no clue in them. "How could he be so cruel and cold hearted like this?" she asked herself silently. Then slowly, he lowered his head and headed toward the door. She frowned at his gestures. "How could he just walk away from me?" she sought deeply in her painful heart.

"Bastard!" she lashed out, grabbing him by the arm and spinning him around to face her. In instant reaction, she swung forcefully with her right hand and slapped him across the face. But he did not flinch, instead he kept his head down like child ready for his punishment and avoided her tearful eyes. With her hand still throbbing from the slap, she let out a gasp of pain, pushing him aside as she made her way out of the door and out of his life.

Part 2:

3 months later:

"Mom, Dad, after months of deliberating, I've decided to give P'Por a chance," Aum confirmed with a convincing smile.

"Oh, honey that's wonderful," Her parents' eyes glistened with joy and excitement. Her parents have been trying to get them together ever since the breakup. Por comes from a well-known family background, as like her father's, and the two families have been close for as long as she could remember. Her mother would always tease her that she and Por were arranged to be married ever since she was born, but she never really pressured her about it.

Aum gave her mother another smile and rested her head in her mother's chest, hiding the true feeling in them. Although the pain was still there, she refuses to let it take anymore of it from her. Besides, a willing heart to find new love is a healing one. But quickly emptiness filled it, as her parents left her sitting alone to phone Por and his family for dinner that night. Closing her eyes, she reclined back in the cushion, wondering if she had made the right decision to start a new.

"Miss Aum," Lada the maid intervened her thoughts, "there is a letter addressed to you."

Awakening to face reality, Aum slowly reached for the enveloped and looked at it confused. "There is no addressee," she stated. Lada gave her a slight smile and scooted her way out of the room. She examined the envelope closely, trying to recognize the handwriting, but it was none she had seen before. Raising one eyebrow she ran her index finger under the lid, opening it up.

"Aum honey, Por would like to have a word with you. He's too cute. He's in denial." Her mother called from the other room. Aum let out a sigh and got up from the couch and made her way to the phone still holding the letter in her hand.

"Hello, P'Por," Aum tried to sound excited.

"So, is it true? You have accepted my proposal?" Por said thru the line in an unconvinced tone.

"Yes," she murmured, giving her cheering parents a slight smile. "But it's not like I'm marrying tomorrow or anything. I'm just considering we see more of each other."

"I'm just happy you're considering it," Por asserted in a high pitch tone. Aum didn't reply instead she nodded her head as if he could see her doing it.

Later on that night:

Closing the door behind her, still having chills from the long chat with Por, she was finally able to read the mysterious letter. Just knowing it was a mysterious letter generated excitement thru her body. She walked to her bed, holding the letter up in front of her, investigating its presence. She made herself comfortable on her bed and pulled the letter out of the envelope carefully, making sure she didn't rip it with her excited, yet cold, fingers. She took a long, deep breath and exhaled slowly before reading the letter.

It read:
My Beloved Aum,
You are the love in my heart,
The song in my soul
The answers to my prayers
The One who makes me whole

You are the oxygen in my life,
The air that makes me breathe
The strength to keep me strong,
And the truth that I believe

You are the star in all my dreams,
My logic when I'm wrong,
All my greatest thoughts,
And to whom I do belong

You are not just "somebody"
You are my world, my life, my love.
You are truly my everything!
And much more than all above.

Holding the letter close to her, Aum wondered who is capable of such lovely words. The first named that popped in her head was Oil. But was that possible? 'Why would he send me a love letter?' she wondered, 'Could it be P'Por?' She shook her head undecidedly and read the letter again, absorbing its sweetness into her heart.

A week later:

"Home already?" her mother asked. Aum smiled sheepishly at her. "Did you not invite Por in for a cup of coffee?" her voice hinting a warning.

"I did, but he declined. He said he would rather spend a whole day having coffee with me then just a quick 15 minutes," Aum explained.

"He's such a charming young man," her mother appraised him. Aum gave her another slight smile and continue walking.

"Miss Aum," Lada greeted her at the stairs. "There's another letter here for you." Aum looked down at the letter and a pleasing smile spread across her face.

"Thank you," she winked at Lada, taking the letter in her hands, and quickly walked up the stairs to her bedroom where she could have some privacy.

She propped herself quickly on the bed and gently opened the envelope. To her surprise, the envelope released a lovely scent. She closed her eyes and breathed in the lovely smell. Cheerfully, she opened up the letter and began reading.

It read:
My Beloved Aum,
My love blooms for you
Like a flower in spring
Like a piece of art
Its a beautiful thing.

I hold to gently
And feel its light glow
As into my heart
it begins to flow

It opens the petal
The dew it does drink
As into your eyes
My soul starts to sink.

My stomach aflutter
With butterfly wings
Emotions and thought
And other things.

Gripping the letter against her chest, Aum slumped backwards into her pillow with love written all over her face. 'Who are you?' she wondered, taking the letter up to her nose and breathing in the scent slowly.

Part 3:

2 weeks later:

"Aum," Por said in a gentle tone, "Wait right here, while I go get us some drinks." Aum nodded her head with a slight smile about to say something, but Por cut her off, "I know strawberry banana smoothie." He told her. Aum smiled with a flash of white teeth to him, flattered that he remembered her favorite drink.

Aum walked to the waiting area and sat down as Por stood in line for their drinks. He waved slightly at her when he caught her looking over at him. She flashed him another smile and laughed to herself, shaking her head. She exhaled slightly as her eyes roamed the area, when from a far she saw something she wished her eyes had missed. Her heart skipped a beat as she stood up on her feet and walked toward the flower shop across the way.

"Aum," Oil uttered softly, when their eyes met, his voice so soothing to her ears. With quivering lips, Aum could not reply. She was too caught up in the situation. "How are you?" he asked, looking deeply into her eyes, reaching out to touch her. Aum stood motionless, lost in his eyes all over again. Her moist lips parted to say something, but someone cut her short of her words.

"There you are Oil," Alicia said cheerfully with a smile. However, her smile stopped midway when she saw Aum's distressed face. Terrified, she quickly walked over to Oil and slid behind him afraid Aum would attack her like their first encounter.

Aum stood staring unable to utter a single word. For awhile the three stood in awkward silence. The clock in the store chimed, breaking Aum away from the twilight trance. She blinked and regained control of her emotions. "I'm still breathing," Her lower lip trembled as she spoke, glaring into his eyes coldly.

Oil lowered his head in shame. Alicia wrapped her arms around his arm as she saw the sour look on his face. Oil gave her a comforting smile, patting her hands slightly, and then looked back at Aum with sadness in his eyes. It generated heat along her spines. She could feel the connections between the two and wanted to snatch both of their hearts out to see how dark it was to hurt her so much like this. Staring at their hooked arms, Aum grounded her teeth as her jaw clenched tightly. She took a step forward, wanting to pull them apart at that moment.

"Aum, here's your drink," Por said from behind. Aum stopped midway and turned around to see Por walking up to them with the drinks in his hands. Por smiled at her and looked over to Oil and Alicia. "Friends of yours?" he asked casually nodding at the two.

Taking the time to calm down her nerves, Aum managed to give him a full smile. "No," she replied flatly, taking the drink from him. "I've never met either of them before and hope I won't run into them again." She swore under her breath bitterly. "Let's go P'Por, something around here reeks." With that she hooked her arm around his and walked out of the store. Por looked at her confused and then turned to look at Oil and Alicia as they made their way out of the mall. He was sure he had seen them before.
* * *

"Are you feeling ok?" Por asked concerned as he parked the car in her driveway. "You've been quiet since we left the mall."

"I'm fine, just a little exhausted," Aum lied, giving him a convincing smile and stepped out of the car. "Thank you for being my shopping buddy today." With a warm smile, Por nodded his head and waved to her. She waved as he pulled out of her driveway.

Letting out a long breath, she turned around slowly and walked inside the house. Dragging her feet thru the living room and up the steps to her bedroom, she was overwhelmed with mixed emotions. Sorrow clearly visible on her face, she slumped onto her bed.

* Knock - Knock *

"Come in. The door's not locked," Aum answered not bothering to sit up to see who it was.

"Miss Aum," Lada said walking inside softly. Recognizing her voice, Aum sat up slowly. Lada gave her a big smile and handed her the letter. The instant her fingers touched the envelope, the sorrow in her just seem to vanish.

"Thank you," Aum's eyes glistened with excitement. Lada nodded her head and made her way out. She knew Aum wanted to be alone with the letter. The moment the door closed behind her, Aum quickly opened the envelope.

It read:
My beloved Aum, I couldn't sleep the other night for you were the only thing on my mind. I stayed up all night, trying to find the right words to express in this letter. But my mind drew a blank. So this is the only way I could express my feelings to you.

Too many times I hesitate to say
What's in my heart
Because I have so much to say
I don't know where to start.

And even on a day like this
The best that I can do,
Is tell you words can't measure
The love I feel for you.

Tears filled her eyes, as she read the last line. 'Who is this mysterious person, writing her these love letters that touched her heart so deeply? Who could be so sweet and romantic as to take the time to write letters after letters each week?' she wondered. She wiped the joyful tears from her eyes, folded up the letter, and placed it back inside the envelope. Then she opened her drawer and pulled out a small chest. A sincere smile appeared on her face as she slipped the envelope in place with the rest of the letters she received.

Part 4:

Another month:

For weeks after weeks, the love letters continued its way to her heart, each one revealing something more precious than the previous ones.

Aum sat smiling at Por who sat across the patio from her. 'Are you that romantic?' she wondered, staring at his sparkling eyes.

"You're in an extra good mood today," he amended, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"It's a lovely day. Why not be in a good mood?" she asserted, her voice taking on an ironic edge.

"You're right," he agreed, nodding his head, "It is a lovely day. But all the lovelier with you around."

Aum raised an eyebrow at the phrase. She studied his face and wondered if he's the one. She opened her mouth as if to ask him the question, but closed it quickly, deciding to hold it off a while longer. Why risk losing the sensational feelings the letters has brought upon her?

"You are too kind," she tried not to sound too flattered.

Just then both of their mothers walked out to the patio, whispering and giggling among themselves. From the way their eyes glowed, Aum knew they were gossiping about them.

"In case you two are wondering, we're just talking about the engagement ceremony next week," her mother said excitedly to them, squeezing Por's mother's hand, giggling like two teenage girls.

"It's going to be super big, and super beautiful," Mrs. Skidjai announced then looked over to Aum's mother. "Is there such a thing as super beautiful?" she asked. Mrs. Chaichue shrugged at her and the two continued to laugh.

Rolling her eyes at her mother's childish ways, Aum caught a glimpse of Por staring. She gave him a shy grin and turned her face away, feeling her temperature rising all of the sudden.

After the Skidjai left, Aum stood gazing at the open sky. Her life was changing so fast right before her eyes. Next week she would be engaged to Por, but something deep down was still nagging her. 'What is it?' she asked herself silently. 'Could it be the unanswered questions with Oil that was bothering her?'

"No," she uttered softly under her breath, "I shall not speak of you again. For as long as I shall live, you never existed in my life." But who was she fooling? Just a simple thought of his touch and she was filled with sorrow. She couldn't understand why, after all he's put her through, she still missed everything about him.

"Miss Aum," Lada said from behind softly, making sure she didn't startle her. "This letter arrived earlier today but I didn't bring it you for I saw you were with Mr. Por." She handed Aum the letter. 'Lada, such a polite and well-manner person she is,' thought Aum, taking the envelope from her. Lada curtsy and left Aum alone.

After Lada disappeared inside the house, Aum quickly sat down on the chair and opened the letter. Her body language exposed her eagerness to read the letter. But the feel of the letter was different this time. It had something else enclosed with it. Slowly, she unfolded the letter and discovered a picture within its crease. She flipped the picture over, only to stare at an image that nearly gave her a heart attack.

The letter and the picture slipped thru her fingers and landed swiftly on the table. Hot burning tears began to forms itself at the corner of her eyes. She lifted her head up slightly, trying to hold it in as she took a long, deep breath. After several soothing breaths, she regained control of her emotions and picked up the picture again. Just one glance at the picture brought tears to her eyes again so quickly. She swallowed the lump in her throat and picked up the letter with trembling fingers.

It read:

My Beloved Aum, I hope the picture of you and I together didn't upset you to the point where you won't read this letter. Therefore, I beg you to please read it first and you can do as you please with it afterwards.

I understand you must be filled with hatred at the moment finding out that I was the one writing you all the love letters. As you know, I'm not good with saying it in person. I find this was the only way I could express my feelings to you.

I just couldn't go without telling you how truly sorry I am from the bottom of my heart for all the pain and tears I've caused. You may find it hard to believe but I, too, am suffering. But the pain is worth it, just to know that you've found someone who will take good care of you for the rest of your life. Love him as much as he loves you.

Multiple drops of tears landed on the letter as she finished reading. "Oil," she whispered, suddenly feeling the need to see him again. She grabbed the picture in her hand and rushed out to the car. The letters just didn't do it for her. She needed more reasons, more explanations for their sudden heart aching breakup.

Mixed emotion dispersed from every corner of her mind, as she sped down the road to his condo. She bit her lips in vain, hoping that she wasn't too late, that he would still be there, waiting for her. The instant she pulled up the Condo, she jumped out of the car, tossing her keys to the uniform employee. She raced inside, straight to the elevator, and repeatedly pressed the button. Within minutes, the door slid open. She stepped inside and pressed #6 quickly, without waiting for anyone else.

Twirling her thumbs nervously, she watched as the numbers on the elevator slowly moved on. "Come on, come on," she echoed faintly as she passed each floor. * Bing * Finally the 6th floor. She hopped out of the elevator and raced down the hall. Her hearted pounded heavily, telling her to run faster as she picked up speed. Only a few steps from Room 675, she exhaled cheerfully, when a maid pushed her cart out from the room.

"Miss, you can't go in there," the maid said to her when she saw her trying to push her way thru the door.

Aum stopped and frowned at her. "But my boyfrie---, I mean my friend lives here." She caught herself in time.

The maid gave her a confused look. "Miss, that room's been vacant for nearly 2 months. Someone just called for it yesterday."

"Vacant?" Aum repeated slowly, letting the word sink in.

Part 5:

Engagement Day:

Aum's head spun around like crazy. For the whole week, she could not find a way to get a hold of Oil. None of her colleagues knew about his where about either. She tried calling his cell phone several times, even knowing it was disconnected, but she just wouldn't give up.

It was her engagement day, the day of joy and laughter, but she was not laughing. She was stressed out more than ever, with only one thing on her mind, Oil. Frustrated and coming to a dead end, she propped heavily on her bed. She exhaled loudly, pulled her dresser opened, and pulled out her small chest. Inside was every single letter that Oil had written to her. She ran her fingers thru each one, listening to the sound it made against her nails. 'Where are you?' she wondered and sighed in grief.

* Knock  Knock *

She quickly pushed the dresser in at the sound of the knocks. "Come in," she said, clearing up her dry voice. "Oh, it's you Lada," she exhaled when she saw Lada's pleasant face peered inside.

"I'm sorry to bother you Miss Aum, but a young lady asked me to give you this letter." Lada explained, showing her the letter. Aum looked down at it, afraid to even touch it.

Aum frowned, "A young lady?" she asked, directing the question more to herself than Lada.

Lada nodded her head. "She insisted that I give it to you right away. She said it was extremely important that you read it or you would be sorry for the rest of your life."

Aum nodded her head slowly as she took the letter in her hand. Suddenly, she had a sick feeling at the pit of her stomach. However, she waited until Lada closed the door behind her before opening the envelope.

It read:

Aum,

I just couldn't stand to see you misunderstand Oil any longer. I have to tell you the truth about everything. In case you're wondering who I am. I am the girl with Oil that night, the night you and he had a terrible breakup. But I want you to understand; I didn't want to do it. Oil begged me to do so.

"He begged her to do so?" Aum said out loud, confused by what she meant. She shook her head and continued to read on.

I'm not the 3rd hand in your relationship; I am his distant cousin. In fact there was never anyone in his heart but you. I've never seen anyone love someone as much as Oil loves you. You see, about 6 months ago, Oil was diagnosis with cancer. The doctor told him that he had 3 months to live. I found out accidentally when I bumped into him at the hospital. It was then that he begged me to help him. He didn't want you to know he was dying. His intentions were for you to forget about him and move on with someone better.

He's been fighting so hard to stay alive just to make sure you are happy. And now that he's learned you have found someone, he can finally go with ease. But I don't want it to end this way. I want you to see him for the last time and tell him you understand before it's too late. Please come! He's staying at Central Town Hospital in Room 502.

Alicia

"Oil!" Aum gasped and jumped on her feet. She raced downstairs in a flash, dodging everyone in her path.

"Aum, where are you going?" her mother called after her.

She gripped the letter tightly in her hand and hopped in her car. She stepped on the gas pedal the instant the car started. You could hear her tires squeaked a mile away. "Aum!" her mother ran after her but only caught the horrible smoke left behind.

Aum swirled into a parking space the instant she found one. She didn't care if she was double-parking. There was no time. Nothing at the moment meant anything to her but to be at her lover's side at his last minute. She hopped out of the car and ran quickly up the concrete steps of Central Town Hospital, holding her traditional, engagement dress up to move faster. Inside she stood impatiently for the elevator to arrive, but it was on the 10th floor and making its way down.

"Dammit!" she cursed, slamming her fist on the door and turned toward the stairs.

In the stairways, she took off her heels quickly, hoping it will speed up her pace, and ran up the stairs. Just at the 3rd floor, she was quite out of breath. "No, I can't stop now" she said to herself as the image of Oil's smiling face appeared in her thoughts. She bit her lips and was determined to continue up the stairs with her aching thighs. Every aching muscle in her legs was worth seeing his face again.

Finally opening the door on the 5th floor, she stepped in the hallway. Her heart pounded heavily than ever as if it was going to pop right out of her chest. She walked up to Room 502 filled with fear that the pain in legs felt like just an ant bite. She turned the doorknob with trembling fingers. Afraid of what she would be faced with inside, she closed her eyes tightly and took 3 deep breaths.

"Aum," Alicia said the minute she appeared in the room.

Aum didn't respond. Instead she felt numbed all over, but somehow she manages to walk to the unrecognizable body, lying motionless in the hospital bed. Tears ran down her face like a broken faucet, when she looked into the two, almond eyes looking up at her.

"Oil," she gasps as she reached for his arm. "I'm here baby, I'm here." She sobbed, running her trembling hand along his cold cheek. "I forgive you," she said in between gasps. Tears sipped out of Oil's tired eyes. "I love you," Aum said in a soothing tone, wiping the tears from his face.

His lips curled up into a gentle smile as the 3 little words echoed thru his ears. Then he lifted up his arm slightly as Aum looked at the envelope in his hand. She knew his intentions and took the envelope in her hands, looking up at him with teary eyes. He gave her another smile and slowly nodded his head for her to open the letter and read it. She wiped the tears from her eyes and opened the letter slowly. The instant she unfolded the letter, she gasped, placing her fingers against her lips.

"Oh Oil," she sobbed, returning her attention back to him. But his eyes were closed. "Oil," she gasped, shaking him slightly on the arms. But he didn't move a muscle. "OIL," she cried out in vain, embracing him tightly, resting her head on his chest. Her one true love was gone. She cried uncontrollably, as the letter fell out of her hand and landed onto the floor. The last love letter written in his own writing, a page full of 3 little words ~ "I LOVE YOU."

@}~~~The End~~~{@
